According to my tutor, who worked for Volkswagen until '09, the reason the aux belt breaks is diesel contamination. When changing the fuel filter, often people will force it down into place, by tightening the screws. This damages the seal & fuel leaks out, onto the belt, causing it to swell & break. A potentially very expensive mistake if it gets caught in the cambelt.

This is a potential yes, however this was due to the tensioner being damaged and out of shape so the belt shredded up.
