  • The White Queen (2013) scene: Thomas Grey, one of Elizabeth Woodville's son from her first marriage to John Grey, has been betrothed to one of England's wealthiest heiresses. This is only the latest in a series of incredibly advantageous matches the Woodville children have made to wealthy and/or powerful members of the English nobility. It has angered the rest of the nobility and made them jealous. It has also provoked the derision of the members of House York (Edward IV's relatives). Many people in the country, including Edward's family, believe that Elizabeth Woodville practices black magic (to seduce and influence the king, as well as to curse others) and they are wary and fearful of her power as a result.
This show is based on a series of novels by Philippa Gregory, including:

This shows how everybody thinks or hates the Woodville family. It was worst for people who were upstarts nobles instead of noble drops of blood that were passed down for centuries. Elizabeth Woodville was not a commoner Lancastrian daughter, but she was a widow and has two sons which set everyone off on why would Edward marries this type of girl. That was when they whisper and decided, "It was witchcraft. or she cast a spell on him." They wanted every reason to hate Elizabeth Woodville as they commonly don't believe that Edward had fallen in love with Elizabeth Woodville. It was very horrible;e and cruel for everyone back in the day.

That is one more reason why Kings married foreign princesses instead of noble ladies or commoners from their own countries: it wouldn't alter the balance of power. Foreign Queen consorts share interests with the King and his children and don't have power bases in the country while non-foreign queens had families that experianced meteoric rise because of their positions. People also hated the idea that a noble family would have complete access and control over a king through a queen consort. Even if it's other men stealing the king's autonomy people would hate it. This is why the Elizabeth Woodvilles and the Anne Boleyns of the English monarchy were so hated by the gentry and especially the nobility. You could start a rebellion on a fake rumor that the queen's family was skimming taxes or something like that and it would work because people would actually believe it.
More obviously however is the fact that foreign queens provide alliances with other countries. Considering that the York dynasty faced multiple French backed invasions of England (Two of which actually overthrew their rule) this would've made a huge difference in their fate. I can't say if it was specifically just Elizabeth Woodville but Edward IV marrying her instead of a more advantageous suitor is the event that causes all the the problems for the House of York. It is the source of all the infighting that destroyed the house and created all opportunities for the House of Lancaster to regain the throne. Despite Phillipa Gregory's depiction of Elizabeth Woodville as this ultra diehard Yorkist she immediatly tried to exclude the high Yorkist nobility from Edward V's regency and throws in all her support behind Henry Tudor.

@@user-ti5cw1ug6l That is true. Also, to keep the new offspring into a real powerful lineage as their backing to their claim throne and have new fresh bloodline for the next generations.
That is what Edward didn't realize if there is no powerful family backing, he wouldn't keep the throne, yet he got them back because he had his brothers like George and Richard to come and rescue him from his mistakes.
That is why Henry Tudor did many adventurous arrange marriages like Catherine of Aragon and King James of Scotland to marry his son prince Arthur Tudor and Margaret Tudor.
That way he has two powerful nations to protect his right and stop any Yorks from claiming his crown.

Sultans did the opposite, in order to not to alter the balance of power they didn't marry, only took slaves from their harem.

I hate the way George and Cecily talk about Elizabeth and I love how richard and Anne defend Elizabeth and the marriage between her son and a rich girl

Yes, Richard and Anne were amongst the most friendly members of the establishment (royals and nobles) towards the Woodvilles, at least in this show. They only turn against Elizabeth Woodville and her family once they treat them badly (Anne) and threaten their positions (Richard).

Ironic the only likable people in this scene are Richard, Isabelle and Anne. Elizabeth was grasping and a vindictive woman (at least in the show) and her family caused problems for the realm, George is always awful, Cecily need to go home and shut up, and Edward needs to stop being swayed by his wife.
