I like stickers in some instances. Like the Snowspeeder and Millennium Falcon. But only for extra detail that couldn't be replicated with pieces otherwise, i.e. terminal, burn marks, exposed wires, etc.
I tend to stay away from the licensed themes now. I used to collect a lot of Star Wars from 2005-2010 so I have a lot of the high value older sets that back when they came out were fairly cheap. Being Australian I’m used to paying more but it’s kinda ridiculous walking into places like Target and seeing the new first order destroyer or ATAT going for in excess of $200.
Couldn't agree more. Went shopping with mum when Toys R Us were shutting down for a bit of a nostalgia trip with her, and what was left on the shelf was a wastr of money, even with a huge discount. I just can't justify the price, when you can buy a scale model and paints for cheaper and get more enjoyment out of it.
The only lego sets ive recently bought which felt like proper value was the NASA Apollo Saturn V-1.5m tall, comes apart into stages, $150aud I feel disnep is just massively spiking the price for licensing so lego has no real choice but to sell them for stupid prices
My personal issue with Lego these days is how they are relying on licenced lines; Star Wars, Super Heroes, Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Minecraft, Disney... It really jacks up the price quite a lot. Of course, I'm one of those old farts longing for the days of the Space, Castle and Pirates lines of sets. Sigh, I really hope they'll revisit those lines again - or even come up with something new and exciting (and successful) as Ninjago.
While I’ll always love Star Wars I got into lego at around the 2008 era and loved themes like space police, power miners and Atlantis. Those sets are way better than the super hero or Jurassic park.
If you look at inflation Lego is staying the same price, and the details mean the whole set is smaller In business terms if Lego didn’t increase with inflation, it would be getting cheaper, because it wouldn’t make the company as much money
If the ships themselves get smaller that would actually be quite nice because then they would look better with "bigger" ships like the Millennium Falcon, along with a price drop of some sort.
It'd be nice if Lego tried to keep things to scale in smart ways. Guess it is better left to the custom builders. It'd either get too difficult or too expensive for both Lego and consumer. I would love if they made the bigger ships slightly bigger to better contrast with smaller ships. Hahaha.
I just miss Bionicles. :( The unfortunate reality is kids just don't play with toys anymore. I'm a gamer but I'm also a bit saddened that kids only play video games these days. I work in retail and we rarely sell toys. We have an entire toys section but nothing ever sells there. There's a reason Toys R Us went out of business.
I'm a father of two and I promote my kids using tech devices. There is no studies or publications regarding a child who uses toys vs a child who uses tech. There seems to be this assumption that because children don't wanna play with toys that they are gonna turn out dumb or incapable. My 11 month old can navigate my phone to find the games he likes. My 4 year old can use the computer better than most people I know. I'd wager that their experience with tech from a young age will be much more useful to them in the future than experience with let's say Lego. Lego does not make engineers, so let's not get that twisted. My kids enjoy toys too but if they want the tablet, I'm all for it.
The Outsider 100 percent agree. Bionicles was great and your right kids rarely play with actual toys anymore. I think that’s part of the reason the short lived bionicle reboot didn’t last plus they weren’t compatible with the original bionicle sets which was a huge bummer for me since I still have my toa nuvas
They are getting worse since instead of cool real world themes like pirates, castle or exploration expeditions they switched to "movie that came out this year" or "mainstream franchise"
gotta agree - I would love some new space theme sets like the 80/90s space police sets. A space monorail set like set 6991 from 1994, re-release that set.
Lego is getting easier, before you had to try and craft complex designs with the standard Legos now, when they need a complete design they just invent a new block to make the build easier. Sad.
I personally find Lego to be fascinating hypocrites, let me explain why. They passed on the one of the greatest lego set opportunities, Jurassic Park, because they thought the PG-13 rating was too intense for a lego set, remember this fact. They passed on Indiana Jones for three decades before making sets of the originals to build a market for the Crystal Skull which made up half the products, with the movie coming out the same year coincidentally. Lets not forget Harry Potter, a harmless concept until you realize every movie since the Goblet of Fire was PG-13, which they made sets for anyway. But I guess Lego is ok with a franchise as long as it starts out PG, or it just has to be Star Wars, the new PG-13 Star Wars movies get a pass because they're mother f**king Star Wars and this is Lego we're talking about. Another PG-13 movie was released in 2015...Jurassic World. So what did Lego do? Did they take the moral high ground like they did back in 1993 and pass on the franchise, or did they sell out and start vomiting up sets faster than a child that didn't see their choking hazard sticker. Oh you better believe they sold out, hard enough to make 22 sets from 2015-2018, a $40 video game, a Lego Junior line (for ages 4-7: friendly reminder PG-13 movie) and a Duplo set. You read that right, the same Duplo that makes "developmental toys for 1½-3 year olds to help toddlers meet key milestones like learning colors, shapes, and numbers" yup Jurassic Park: The Fallen Kingdom definitely fits that criteria. So why am I mad, Lego has embraced the franchise enough to sell it to humans incapable of wiping themselves, thats a good thing right? But hold up, where's the Jurassic Park sets? There is ONE-single-freaking-set related to the original movie. Hold onto those crappy old Dino Attack sets, cause thats the closest your childhood ever came to having a Lego Jurassic Park. Look at the bright side, at least you're not a Ghostbusters fan, those poor souls.
Except the fact that the set in 2010 was one of the most overpriced sets and the fact is if you see other sets like the sandcrawler it gets smaller yet more expensive, there is a video comparison between the three sets of it and the latest is the worse
I'd say Lego is getting lazyer you used to be very creative to make certain shapes especially technic but currently they make just the piece needed for the situation and not creative thinking
Yeah but look at the MOCs people have made with those technic parts. They look stunning. So creativity is still there, it's just shifted. Instead of trying to mimic a curve, the creativity now lies on using those panel fairings correctly to bring up more complex curves.
@@anujmchitale Well thats mocs....a good moc has always been leagues ahead of a Lego set, and quite often they use purpose built parts for something it wasnt intended for, so the creativity is still (and always has been) there for MOC builders, but what im saying is the creativity is gone in the official Lego sets.
Legos part inventory being expanded for newer sets isnt a sign of laziness, its a sign of much needed change one main advantage Mega Construx will always have over lego, is part variety, they have an ungodly amount of amazing parts for detail, lego does not Situations where a piece would be perfect for cannot be achieved with building techniques, if they can they most likely can only be achieved poorly, such as the minecraft sets original minecart turns, VS the minecart turns in newer sets Or rollercoaster parts rather than ugly technic construction, or 1 x 1 quarter round tile pieces, rather than using 1 x 1 round, or 1 x 1 square tiles Mega Construx is a company that constantly makes new molds for each set, that is not inherently a bad thing, but when lego adds new parts they add parts than usually can be used for far more than just the use in the set it was introduced, Like the macaroni technic tube, most exceptions are for absurdly large builds, such as the windscreen part for boba fetts UCS ship, or for shapes that are to complex to make without breaking building rules, such as Chells portal gun in the lego dimensions pack
@@pauldeddens5349 you mentioned 4 useful pieces and ignored all the others; combination of pieces, pieces that already contain aspects of other pieces etc etc
city theme is definitely worse in 2018 compared to 2010, city was perfect between 2006 and 2014 and after 2014 they started to look weird lego has become from a child thing to a baby thing as a 19 year old who still buys sets and trying to make a custom city
City is just legos way of marketing non 3rd party retail sets, or essentially normal lego sets I personally love the volcano, jungle, and ice sets, however i would like to see a return to form Maybe a power miners reboot, or a remake of that one space insect theme (the recent one)
Lego is getting worse. As a Lego builder over 10 years I have noticed the quality of parts have gotten worse. Modern pieces seem to be breaking more with just normal building. I have been using pieces from the early 2000s and they last way longer.
@@DrJakesVeryBritishReviews if you do a video on the stress testing bricks, the ones that seam to break the most for me are 1x2 and 1x1 bricks. I have also had breakage with tiles. Also if you make a video it be great to get a shutout. I frequently make custom mocs and tutorials. I like your channel!
@@DrJakesVeryBritishReviews Personally, I've noted that some of the dark brown/earth toned bricks, as well as some lighter grey elements, tend to break on their antistud sides. Must be something about the plastic used.
I used to play with my father's bricks from the 70s/80s. Those red bricks were stepped on, chewed, vacuumed and thrown around for 40 years and they still power through to today with less than half a dozen casualties.
I think that Lego, with its film tie-ins ( aka profit drive ) has become so sophisticated that it leaves little to the imagination and I believe that this is detrimental to the creativity of young minds. When I was a kid, using very basic Lego parts, I regularly constructed things that, if someone else looked at, may not have been obvious as to what they were. But in my young mind, I knew what I had built. Then, being basic, it encouraged me to modify, improve, remodel - in other words it constantly stretched my mind, encouraged problem-solving and educated me all at the same time. I have no doubt that it contributed greatly towards my becoming an engineer in adulthood. Now, Lego has become nothing more than an expensive toy.
I know what you mean but not necessarily true. You can still buy brick sets to unleash your creativity with. But I give you that now it seems they are more successful at selling sets based on big blockbusters.
The cost is also going way up. Inflation is one thing, profits are another. I personally think LEGO doesn't have enough sets geared towards adults at a reasonable price. Everything they gear towards adults is like $150 and up. Or take sets like the Creators they're releasing. They can be as high as $200 and you need to buy several of them to complete the theme. I own the Lincoln Memorial, and while it was fun to build, it's tiny and not much for the price. Or for example Sears Tower (21000-2), it's just black blocks on a small base. Price per piece is 29 cents, which is much higher than even Technic sets, with much more detail in them.
I still have fond memories of visiting Bricklink in London quite a few years ago and there being massive tubs of just tall 2 by 4 White bricks and there were loads of us just sitting around building all sorts from bridges to massive space ships.
@@jaylarcombe7530 I'd love to have an opportunity to do that. At the moment, I still have one of the first half-dozen original LEGOLAND villages off the production line. My dad won it for me in a Kellogg's competition. Just needs some reassembling. Same with three tubs of loose Lego. One problem - they're in the roofie and my disability prevents my accessing it. Maybe some day...
Agree. The latest police stations, for example, don't offer a ton of options to build them drastically different. Especially because they have no big baseplate anymore but three small plates. I was also surprised that my little nephew very rarely changes anything from his LEGO sets.
As a former Vivid fan of Lego I'm telling you all right now that Lego has become worse because they've been focusing way too much on franchise movies and s*** and I really miss the good old days when they had original concepts for Legos related to SciFi and fantasy!
Lego is for the most part getting better. Personally I don't appreciate how they re-release the same sets (Although updated slightly) for example the x-wing, we don't need a new one every time there's a new star wars film.
It would make sense if the price got cheaper with every yearly release, but from what I see they get more and more expensive, which defeats the purpose
I would love them to constantly re-release the exact same sets (just like the Taj Mahal and the Black Seas Barracuda), so it stops resellers and their ridiculous prices.
Every few years though there's new kids who get into the theme. Rather than buying collectible secondary market LEGO it's so much easier for parents to buy new re-releases of sets.
@@bryceduyvewaardt8136 but in the last 5 years and again using my example in the original comment there have been 5 variations of the x-wing in that period (excluding polybag variations).
I think Lego is getting worse for supporting creatitivity as there comes more and more pieces that don't attacht to others and work only in the set it's made for. Example the technicks.
Yes. Lego seems to be only making movie licensed sets that they know the kiddies will love and make these bland sets with useless new piece mouldings (eg the new lego harry potter wands) that nobody asked for. The figures are not interesting as they're overly detailed, meaning they'res only so much you could do with that figure and are pretty expensive. Unlike the old lego where they would come up with these interesting themes with sets that utilised the kid's imagination and intrigued them and would only make piece mouldings if it's necessary. The figures are simple yet charming as they can be used in multiple ways and were alot cheaper thanks to simplicity. Simplicity and imagination were what lego wanted to achieve back in the day which unfortunately has been lost due to their greed.
the new lego wands are miiiiiiles better than the old ones, it was like someone in real life holding the stick of a broom, i understand the decals on panels or pieces but there are little fixes like the new mandolorian helmets being separate from the jetpacks, or how hulk is this enormous figure compared to the standard size figure, lego has gotten better for sure, but the price is so high that it sort of negates how good its gotten
The number of parts are decreasing because of the new pieces that replaces most of the parts from the old like those curved corner pieces and other pieces which makes less part count for a set and actually add more detail on the build unlike the old pieces where some parts don't exist yet so more bricks where required plus some colors we're also unavailable. The stickers is not a problem for me.Since stickers are optional. So for me.LEGO isn't getting bad for me.
The LEGO design trend is to make the models more realistic and smooth, not the actual bricklike looking vehicles they had when I used to play with LEGO sets 20 years ago. They are introducing new smooth and curved brick shapes with every set, which used to be build by a combination of bricks in the past, hence the lower brick count. The upside of this is better looking models, the downside is that the bricks are less compatible with custom made designs.
I disagree. Although the price is somewhat determined by cost of materials, they are bringing in huge profit either way. When you buy lego you are paying for enjoyment and more pieces can be fun for longer, have more building complexity, and have more use later. Why would I pay more money for less pieces when that means the build will be shorter, less fun to construct, and I have fewer pieces to add to my collection later? So from a consumer standpoint, price per piece makes sense.
Yeah, LEGO is getting worse. Too much focus on 3'rd party licensing and sets are becoming too much..."Playmobil" as in fewer and bigger/specialized pieces which is hard to build anything else with. My two biggest gripes in later years was 60124 and 60125, too many stupid design decisions.
@Sagan Unit "You do realize that getting licenses for things like Star wars saved the company right?" Yup, but that doesn't mean they should just wipe out the majority of their other themes just because of it. "Lego wouldn't exist today if they hadn't started doing sets from other IPs." See my first answer. "Companies need to evolve with the times or they'll fail." Yea, but not at the cost of it's old fanbase. "They still make normal bricks. If you don't like the new stuff, don't buy it, but don't force the old stuff on everyone. It's not inherently "better" or "worse", it's just different." In other words, LEGO could still make all the awesome old stuff AND YOU don't need to buy it since you don't like it. "I think Lego has been getting better. One of the biggest reasons I think this is because they now add extra pieces to every set. Which is awesome. They didn't when I was younger." In other words...for you it's quantity over quality...gotcha.
Sagan Unit I agree, Lego would not have survived bankruptcy if they did not have IPs for their products. However they still have their own "general" themes so parents and children have a choice of what type of set to get.
@Sagan Unit "no you dumb tard. It's extra pieces in the sense that if you lose some, you have extra. It's an extra unspoken hidden value. I just started buying Lego for my son and was pleased to find that they do this now." I mistook "reserve parts/pieces" for " more/just extra pieces", no need to get snippy here Mr. Sagan. "The still do Lego city, Ninjago, bionicle, friends, elves and others that are their own IP, as well as the classic bricks." At the same time they got rid of Castle, Pirates and Space in favour of 3'rd party IP's which can fill their role. "I have no idea what you're complaining about since they never stopped making the classic stuff, they just added more stuff and the quality of the product itself hasn't changed." I'm complaining about LEGO getting rid of too much of the old themes (Castle, Pirates, Space etc.) in favor of 3'rd party IP's which fill their role. Too many of their sets (both original and 3'rd party) have regressed in terms of "Creative Building". Different pieces are specialized to such a degree that you have problems building things out of your own imagination, it's like LEGO have separated creativity and play. Take a look at the building instructions from the older sets and you will see a bunch of different pictures with ideas for other ways that set could be built...while in the new sets you have nothing like that. "The way you talk, you sound like an old fart that can't deal with change and you'd rather Lego die out than diversify/evolve its product line and you'd rather millions of kids today not play with anything other than what you like." Compared to you, I would most likely be an old fart...yes. But no, I don't want LEGO to die out...while at the same time it would be nice if they bothered about their old fans who aren't into all the licensed stuff. " So your opinion is the best and anything else is complete garbage and everyone else should just kill themselves for thinking differently? See how that works? Putting words in other people's mouths like that?" What ? That's not even remotely close to what you get out of my last post =P What I see here is a huge age gap, I started out with LEGO in the early 80's...you apparently started out in the last few years. I don't mind change, unless it changes so much of the products core that it starts alienating the old fans.
They stopped giving mecha-characters articulated knees. You look at any large building figure and you see that the leg doesn't even bend, and it's really awkward to pose. I was looking through the catalog the other day and one of the mechas I saw *didn't even have hip articulation.* As far as I know, Exo-Force was the last line to have full articulation, at least if you ignore Bionicle, Hero Factory, and the various spinoffs of that ball-socket system.
How do you figure that they are shrinking? The speeder seems to be exactly the same size, as do most vehicles. And as for other builds, if they shrink in size they also shrink in price. There are a few exceptions (AT-ST), but in general I don't think they have less big sets than they used to. Probably even more. The only sets I've noticed which are getting smaller (though not in terms of parts, only in terms of actual size) are the Modular Buildings. But then, maybe you are talking about City or Classic, which I don't pay much attention to.
Lego got worse when they started making special pieces for their models rather than requiring builders to use their ingenuity to use standard pieces. The logical progression would be to to just produce a kit of special parts like an Airfix kit
I prefer the 1999 49 piece set. I like the yellow minifigures much better than the flesh colored minifigures. Minifigs for licensed lines are over-decorated today, the simpler Minifigs look better.
I have that set, 7110. I remember paying like $5 for it too when I was a kid! Hahaha! I really like the new sets, they look better, but man I love the price and simplicity of my childhood Lego sets, the only really complicated sets I remember as a kid were the big Technic sets like the 8466.
I do not think Lego is getting better. In terms of the star wars sets we used to have those great original trilogy sets and clone wars sets. Now we just have someting like that disgusting at-st without a head! with only one decent minifigure (Phasma). With that said there are some themes that have improved like Lego Harry Potter and ideas.
You can't extrapolate that from only one set. Many sets have gotten better, like the Falcon and the X-Wing and such. I think Lego is getting better in terms of quality and detail, but worse in terms of ideas. The old OT sets were nice ideas, but often very crude and simple. These days most sets are much more streamlined and detailed, but they are not original anymore or, worse, are uninteresting because we don't like the new films as much. The new OT sets (Yoda's hut, the classic ships and vehicles) are, with a few exceptions (Cloud City), actually great.
I think it’s a bit of Both. Some themes do get great improvements while other don’t. I’m not a marvel guy, but I much preferred the old iron man helmets where he can lift the mask off like in the films to the new one which just looks like a weird helmet, however, the changing of the bat helmet to remove the bottom strap looks better because he feels more like a cowl attached to him than a helmet.
I think Lucasfilm is forcing a drop in quality in some instances with regards to their licensing. Either they are charging too much for their license or they are demanding more for less in royalties. It's been happening with Hasbro. They cannot even break even with Star Wars toys. The quality dropped significantly after Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise. I think Ep3-Clone Wars Era Hasbro toys were the best as far as quality and accessories go. I wouldn't be surprised if the same is happening to Lego. Less pieces, tiny mistake, higher prices, improvements here but stepbacks elsewhere.
yeah after the clone wars sets stopped being made i think there was a definite increase in price, aka when disney bought star wars, if you look at clone wars sets and what they sold for the price is incredibly better than what it is now.
You made a mistake building the 2017 set... the legs on the tusken raiders and Ben Kenobi are mix up... Ben Kenobi has brown rob details on his legs and the tusken raider has just some tan details...
2:33 it is not solely LEGO’s decision on the box and instruction artwork. If you look at Star Wars products from each year they often have a standard label on every piece of Star Wars merchandise released.
I think overall the sets have been getting better; they have been getting more detailed with lots of cool new pieces, and minifigure printing has gotten a lot more detailed too. I think the main problem I’ve noticed was when I bought an architecture set this summer (2018) and noticed that the clutch power seems to be noticeably worse than on a set from even 2016, and significantly worse than clutch power of even older parts. I’ve also noticed that on sets that are not even 5 years old, the 1x2 grill tile pieces and 1x1 cheese slope pieces tend to show cracks on them, or straight up just beak in half, and need to be replaced. The TL;DR is that set and minifig detail has increased as well as their parts library, but very shockingly, clutch power and piece quality is decreasing.
As I’ve in the past 2 years rediscovered LEGO, prior to that when I was growing up in the ‘80’s so I can’t compare my experience to 10 years ago. Builds are getting bigger, vehicles going from traditionally 4 stud wide now 6 stud, so much more detail these days including the mini figures so most definitely I personally feel they’re better. Not used to be a fan of stickers but have learnt to like them. I guess the creator sets are what I enjoy best because they are reliant on the traditional brick rather than adding stickers or prints and the lack of large specialised single moulds that they would use for example a city theme aircraft but makes it easier for children to build.
Creator 3 in 1 is my favorite theme since they went minifig scale, no stickers and good standard parts and overall good buildings the last couple years.
8:40 are you referencing the Han Solo falcon? If so... I just picked it up from Walmart for $40 a few hours ago. Idk if someone made a mistake? But $40 seemed a bit off for a set not even a year old that retails for $169.99. Gotta love Walmart clearance.
Its seems kinda unfair to only compare 1 set to 1 set to argue which is 'better' especially when the 2010 one was a store exclusive that didn't sell to well. Even though I do feel like Lego is getting better in some regards such as value of pieces for money, the size of the builds seem to be getting smaller and we don't see real baseplates for landscapes anymore :(. I also don't like the lack of original action themes instead of just movie x.
cant really base the overall production quality onto one giant downsizing. i agree the old mtt should get a rerelease, but god...the latest ucs sandcrawler, slave one and most of the rogue one sets...damn...heck...i even bought the resistance bomber because it is such a nice set and i dislike that new trilogy they made.
2:38 I think their getting back in that style mainly because of the release of the Last Jedi. You can see that the sets from Solo are a yellowish kind of vibe
I find on newer lego it is easier to see where the injection moulding nib or white spot what ever u want to call it. Maybe I just never saw it so much when was younger would like to hear what anyone else thinks.
Lego has improved so much since I was a kid, simple brick sets isnt a good example. The only thing old lego was good it is building a block of a house. Look at Lego Technic, Lego Mindstorm, and Lego Boost I believe there is a new programming set also, and dont forget the RC sets. What you can build with lego continues to expand and build on its foundation that's why lego continues to improve, pieces and sets are streamlined, theres more pieces that are used to give flexibility and movability like never before which means more playability. I build all kinds of robots, and vehicles for my son to play with stuff that I cloudnt create when I was younger
Agree that lego has gotten better over the decades. I am 60 and have been building with lego since I was a child. Stopped as a teenager and picked back up when I had kids in the 80s. Lots more interesting pieces in the 80s than in the 60s. More fun to play with for making MOCs than in the 60s - especially for an engineer. I suspect people in the 80s also lamented that new pieces were introduced. Me? I liked being able to build more realistic things than just block houses. Stopped building when kids grew older. Had a massive set collection by then (Wife considers lego simply as toys.) Fast forward to last year and I said so what! Started back to building and collecting lego again. Have purchased hundreds of dollars for various interesting pieces on brick link - not counting new sets like Slave 1, ultimate millennium falcon, bucket excavator etc. Went hog wild not because of the theme,s, but because all of the new MOCs I could build with the cool pieces. I apologize for what sounds like bragging. The point is that I wanted lots and lots of the new pieces not available in the 80s. As far as quality, I haven't broken a single new piece. I mentioned to my wife just how impressive the tolerances are when connecting bricks. Can't believe how tightly the fit together. I don't recall the being as tight in the 80s. Still have a stray brick or three from the 80s. They are not nearly as tight fitting - but then again I don't fit as tightly as I did 50 years ago!
Care to take a look at technic sets?.. Old Star Wars sets included models of C3P0, Darth Vader, R2D2 and Jango Fett, and many other characters. Stormtroopers, different droids. And most of them had some sort of mechanisms in them. A destroyer droid could unfold automatically after a roll, for example. Last time I checked, there were no analogs to these sets. Instead there were some action figures with little to no assembly required (while more detailed). In my opinion, that's not the spirit of Lego you mentioned. I just looked at Lego vebsite. In Technic section, all I see are cars. No excavators, no cranes or other unusual vehicles (although I admit, they have a bulldozer and a multiterrain vehicle on 4 tank tracks). Most new series are based on something from pop culture (opposed to original stories told by series like Bionicle or Exo-Force). All that leads me to conclusion that far less effort is being put into set design. People will by it anyway - so why bother with additional features?.. Also, I do not understand, why doesn't LEGO produce some legacy sets, like these very same droids. They haven't lost their cool factor by any means.
I'd say 2000-2010 was a big decline. I remember as a kid the legos from the 90s & early 2000s were a lot sturdier. The ones after the Clone Wars came out all broke apart after only a few years after I built them. I only have older lego sets left. Notably my Boba Fett Slave I, & some random Lego Medievil castles & ships. I had a new death star, a AAT, & a LAAT from after the release of the clone Wars. All of those fell apart. And infact Lego is so much more expensive now. I saw a 10 piece set the other day at Target for $20!!!!
I think new is better on almost every aspect/or they are the same. One downside is that there isnt R2D2. Instead there is that braus mosey thing that seems to be low quality. Stickers seems meh.. but you can just ignore them. 3CPO looks way better now than back then and so does Skywalker. I prefer 2010 ship color but that's just me.
When I was a kid my memories of playing with Lego don't come fro sets, it was buying random parts and pieces in bulk from eBay and seeing what I could make of it.
A couple of thoughts about LEGO Technic, since it was the main series of my childhood, and I also gifted myself the 42039 set a year ago or so, for old times sake. In my eyes moving away from hybrid Technic paradigm, i.e. from old bricks that were compatible with the System bricks, and the introduction of all kinds of curved panels and other detailing is a major improvement and growth on LEGO's part - modern sets look much more real, more interesting, and less like mere carcasses of the cars and other machinery. However, I'm almost confident that the old molding process was of higher quality, and the quality of the material as well, and its not just me being a grumpy young man telling stories of how the grass was greener back in my day. For example, molding points became much more noticeable and all over the place, while its hard to spot one at all on those older bricks. The last thing is that I miss those Techic minifigs, especially that bold cyborg badass guy from Competition subseries :)
You are absolutely right about old studfull technic beams being strong. Many people specifically use those to give their MOCs sturdiness. But why I like the studless technic more are the following reasons- 1. Being weaker than the studded beams, we actually need to think more about the structural strength in bigger models. Which is great from understanding mechanical concepts of stress. 2. The studless design challenges us to think 10 steps ahead, if not 15. Because changing stuff later on is really difficult. Something as simple as a vertical crane tower(maybe 5 feet in height) required lot of trussing. These 2 points can make it better or worse, depending upon the mood and/ or the interest of the builder. For me it's definitely the former.
2:38 no, LEGO just changes the artwork around the boxes each time a new movie comes out. It was black for Rogue One, and it is white for The Last Jedi, it has nothin to do with how good it is
The prices are becoming higher. One thing to keep in mind is the piece quality and diversity is increasing. I personally feel that prices should be lower.
The evolution of a set that has had so many re-releases feels less advanced with each release and sometimes is even a downgrade to the previous set of that model.
Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but I don't like how detailed mini figures have been getting lately. Mostly in the proportions of things. Take the most recent Darth Vader helmet for example. It just loos weird in my opinion. Yeah, I guess it is more accurate to the real thing, but the proportions of it just don't really fit in with other Lego stuff. I love the original darth vader minifig helmet design.
One very noticeable difference I found out yesterday. The packaging is much lower quality now. Literally 2 mins walking from the store to the car (items in carrier bag) there was fine rain ☔️ in the air and that blistered the boxes. Normally any rain drops will wipe off right away but not anymore. If you buy any sets on a rainy day, buy/use an extra bag to double wrap them as they won’t survive the trip home anymore.
Part of the reason I switched to Mega Construx -Formerly Mega Bloks- was for this reason. (The other reason being they have the license for a few themes I like). They're cheaper, yet in some ways - more high-quality than Lego. Seriously - Lego still uses stickers, while Mega Construx has switched to nothing but prints.

Dr Jake's Very British Reviews I think the Jedi mind trick worked...
No...I dont agree in the slightest
LEGO is getting more detailed (with both sets and minifigures), but the sets get smaller and smaller while the price gets painfully higher.
CITY sets mostly match inflation and have not increased price.
@@WATCHINGTHEWATCHERS There is also the price of licensing as well as them having to pay for lego shops + employees.
yes it is getting worse
YES COULDNT HAVE SAID IT BETTER
However you forget that the economy changes over time and that if you account for inflation it is the same price per piece it has always been.
have you tried stepping on the 2?
Tbh
Bwahahaha
😂😂😂😂
I prefer when the bricks directly have the details on it rather then stickers
I completely agree
idk I disagree. Usually I never put on the stickers.
I think they only do that now for jr sets
When you put it on the wrong piece, or it’s on upside down, or it’s crooked.
The only lego sets ive recently bought which felt like proper value was the NASA Apollo Saturn V-1.5m tall, comes apart into stages, $150aud
I feel disnep is just massively spiking the price for licensing so lego has no real choice but to sell them for stupid prices
It's treason, then
My personal issue with Lego these days is how they are relying on licenced lines; Star Wars, Super Heroes, Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Minecraft, Disney... It really jacks up the price quite a lot. Of course, I'm one of those old farts longing for the days of the Space, Castle and Pirates lines of sets. Sigh, I really hope they'll revisit those lines again - or even come up with something new and exciting (and successful) as Ninjago.
LEGO is SO much more expensive now
I want Atlantis to return
I don't buy that just classic stuff or city etc
While I’ll always love Star Wars I got into lego at around the 2008 era and loved themes like space police, power miners and Atlantis. Those sets are way better than the super hero or Jurassic park.
We need power miners back!
Older Lego had more charm
Oh noes it's a gundam!
Everything from your past has 'more charm'. It's called nostalgia.
TheSeti12345 damn agreed
i prefer new millennium falcon than the 2 older ones
I strongly disagree
Modern sets are more fun to build, with more details
The problem still is the price, to me at least... I'm not filthy rich
Detail generally yes
Size no (they’re getting more expensive and smaller)
Minifigs generally yes
If you look at inflation Lego is staying the same price, and the details mean the whole set is smaller
In business terms if Lego didn’t increase with inflation, it would be getting cheaper, because it wouldn’t make the company as much money
Yes for better or for worse?
Kayle Mathew Comendador you decide
If the ships themselves get smaller that would actually be quite nice because then they would look better with "bigger" ships like the Millennium Falcon, along with a price drop of some sort.
It'd be nice if Lego tried to keep things to scale in smart ways. Guess it is better left to the custom builders. It'd either get too difficult or too expensive for both Lego and consumer.
I would love if they made the bigger ships slightly bigger to better contrast with smaller ships. Hahaha.
I just miss Bionicles. :(
The unfortunate reality is kids just don't play with toys anymore. I'm a gamer but I'm also a bit saddened that kids only play video games these days.
I work in retail and we rarely sell toys. We have an entire toys section but nothing ever sells there. There's a reason Toys R Us went out of business.
The Outsider I think the only time toys are the biggest sellers are during the holiday season
If bionicles came back again, but with a better story than G2, I would buy bionicles all over again
I am a teen and I play with both.
David Parkes thing is, those sets don't sell as well
I agree, but they do have lego city, but it's just reused.
I liked the older mideval sets
That had dwarfs, wizards, skeletons, and dragons my self...
More of a lotr theme then
The elves series is actually quite nice. Great colours and pieces.
I personally, only buy technic, but the elves have always impressed me.
Lego is getting easier, before you had to try and craft complex designs with the standard Legos now, when they need a complete design they just invent a new block to make the build easier. Sad.
They are actually getting rid of some pieces now, and only making pieces that can be used for multiple sets.
@@CoolAsALego good to hear
@@moneymule8209 yeah I'm glad, because it was rly annoying me lol

Each to their own!

Yeah I agree, makes the expressions look bizarre rather than more accurate or more valuable as toys
I agree the extremely detailed faces do look kind
Alex White go watch the Netflix “TTMU” episode on it
So basically it’s the same thing with a lot more detail and cheaper... that doesn’t sound worse to me
Except the fact that the set in 2010 was one of the most overpriced sets and the fact is if you see other sets like the sandcrawler it gets smaller yet more expensive, there is a video comparison between the three sets of it and the latest is the worse
I'd say Lego is getting lazyer you used to be very creative to make certain shapes especially technic but currently they make just the piece needed for the situation and not creative thinking
I agree, instead of using building techniques, they just make a new piece.
Legos part inventory being expanded for newer sets isnt a sign of laziness, its a sign of much needed change
one main advantage Mega Construx will always have over lego, is part variety, they have an ungodly amount of amazing parts for detail, lego does not
Situations where a piece would be perfect for cannot be achieved with building techniques, if they can they most likely can only be achieved poorly, such as the minecraft sets original minecart turns, VS the minecart turns in newer sets
Or rollercoaster parts rather than ugly technic construction, or 1 x 1 quarter round tile pieces, rather than using 1 x 1 round, or 1 x 1 square tiles
Mega Construx is a company that constantly makes new molds for each set, that is not inherently a bad thing, but when lego adds new parts they add parts than usually can be used for far more than just the use in the set it was introduced, Like the macaroni technic tube, most exceptions are for absurdly large builds, such as the windscreen part for boba fetts UCS ship, or for shapes that are to complex to make without breaking building rules, such as Chells portal gun in the lego dimensions pack

Lego is getting worse. As a Lego builder over 10 years I have noticed the quality of parts have gotten worse. Modern pieces seem to be breaking more with just normal building. I have been using pieces from the early 2000s and they last way longer.
We need to do a proper stress test to see if the bricks are any different
@@lourencoalmada1305 it sucks they don't keep making that quality anymore.
As a former Vivid fan of Lego I'm telling you all right now that Lego has become worse because they've been focusing way too much on franchise movies and s*** and I really miss the good old days when they had original concepts for Legos related to SciFi and fantasy!
klinton kavanagh Yep. My favorite lines of all time were Exo-Force, Castle (with the ogres) and Mars Mission
My favorite creature is the rock monster
Well, they do have LEGO City...
But the thing is, why would this bother you? How does it affect you? You do'n't have to buy any of the slightly updated ones.
I think Lego is getting worse for supporting creatitivity as there comes more and more pieces that don't attacht to others and work only in the set it's made for. Example the technicks.
This is complete bullshit.
Lmao not at all
technics were always like that
Technic beams can stick directly to studs with the holes you normally put axles through
The technic pieces can be used with standard lego pieces through various connecting pieces
I wish I was a kid in the 90s to have been able to experience lego in its prime with the classic city castle, space, pirate, and wild west theme.
The best thing a kid could have was a bucket or box of random assorted Lego pieces.
LEGO ninjago is the best
the new lego wands are miiiiiiles better than the old ones, it was like someone in real life holding the stick of a broom, i understand the decals on panels or pieces but there are little fixes like the new mandolorian helmets being separate from the jetpacks, or how hulk is this enormous figure compared to the standard size figure, lego has gotten better for sure, but the price is so high that it sort of negates how good its gotten
I agree with the original comment
Watching this video I realised I have way too much time on my hands
Me too by the looks of it!
Price per piece is a bad way to compare lego-sets. You need to compare priece per weight.
I actually agree to this, but let’s say someone makes a moc with the same model base. It is probably going to cost less because of the branding.
2010 is still pretty modern. You should compare present day with late 80s or early 90s.
Lego star wars didn't exist in late 80s early 90s. The first set was released in 1999
It would be like this:
Amazing prints and details on sets vs. Haha blue square
Have you seen some of the stuff they did back in the 90s. Some 20$ sets where 40 parts because of massive specialized parts.
@@redenginner
Fooled around lots of LEGO in the 90's, but do you remember any specific sets ?
@Sagan Unit
"You do realize that getting licenses for things like Star wars saved the company right?"
Yup, but that doesn't mean they should just wipe out the majority of their other themes just because of it.
"Lego wouldn't exist today if they hadn't started doing sets from other IPs."
See my first answer.
"Companies need to evolve with the times or they'll fail."
Yea, but not at the cost of it's old fanbase.
"They still make normal bricks. If you don't like the new stuff, don't buy it, but don't force the old stuff on everyone. It's not inherently "better" or "worse", it's just different."
In other words, LEGO could still make all the awesome old stuff AND YOU don't need to buy it since you don't like it.
"I think Lego has been getting better. One of the biggest reasons I think this is because they now add extra pieces to every set. Which is awesome. They didn't when I was younger."
In other words...for you it's quantity over quality...gotcha.
Sagan Unit I agree, Lego would not have survived bankruptcy if they did not have IPs for their products. However they still have their own "general" themes so parents and children have a choice of what type of set to get.
@Sagan Unit
"no you dumb tard. It's extra pieces in the sense that if you lose some, you have extra. It's an extra unspoken hidden value. I just started buying Lego for my son and was pleased to find that they do this now."
I mistook "reserve parts/pieces" for " more/just extra pieces", no need to get snippy here Mr. Sagan.
"The still do Lego city, Ninjago, bionicle, friends, elves and others that are their own IP, as well as the classic bricks."
At the same time they got rid of Castle, Pirates and Space in favour of 3'rd party IP's which can fill their role.
"I have no idea what you're complaining about since they never stopped making the classic stuff, they just added more stuff and the quality of the product itself hasn't changed."
I'm complaining about LEGO getting rid of too much of the old themes (Castle, Pirates, Space etc.) in favor of 3'rd party IP's which fill their role.
"The way you talk, you sound like an old fart that can't deal with change and you'd rather Lego die out than diversify/evolve its product line and you'd rather millions of kids today not play with anything other than what you like."
Compared to you, I would most likely be an old fart...yes.
But no, I don't want LEGO to die out...while at the same time it would be nice if they bothered about their old fans who aren't into all the licensed stuff.
" So your opinion is the best and anything else is complete garbage and everyone else should just kill themselves for thinking differently? See how that works? Putting words in other people's mouths like that?"
What ? That's not even remotely close to what you get out of my last post =P
What I see here is a huge age gap, I started out with LEGO in the early 80's...you apparently started out in the last few years.
I don't mind change, unless it changes so much of the products core that it starts alienating the old fans.
Minifigures and prints are getting better, but sets are getting worse
You kinda cherry picked an example of LEGO getting better
I don't think so
I agree! 👍
Look at the lego star destroyers. The old one costs about 100 dollars and is bigger while the newer one is smaller and is 150 dollars
instead of cherry picking one that gets worse
The new one is smaller, yes, but does the old one have the same details? figures? durability?
They stopped giving mecha-characters articulated knees. You look at any large building figure and you see that the leg doesn't even bend, and it's really awkward to pose. I was looking through the catalog the other day and one of the mechas I saw *didn't even have hip articulation.*
As far as I know, Exo-Force was the last line to have full articulation, at least if you ignore Bionicle, Hero Factory, and the various spinoffs of that ball-socket system.

The old LEGO motto is quality over quantity
The new LEGO motto is smaller and more expensive
I think LEGO is getting better but the sets are shrinking and getting more expensive
I think you might be right
ironically the landspeeder is oversized
Except that the set is this video was shown to be the same physical size, and less expensive, both in price, and per piece.
The 1999 one was smaller 6 studs wide 49 pieces
Lego got worse when they started making special pieces for their models rather than requiring builders to use their ingenuity to use standard pieces.
The logical progression would be to to just produce a kit of special parts like an Airfix kit
my 60192 only has 1 classic normal brick in it. :(
I prefer the 1999 49 piece set. I like the yellow minifigures much better than the flesh colored minifigures. Minifigs for licensed lines are over-decorated today, the simpler Minifigs look better.
Thats the only Star Wars set i have. And i prefer yellow minifigs too unless its like an alien or monster from some non licensed theme
As a person who likes Star Wars, yellow minifigures are undesirable compared to the flesh colored ones.
I have that set, 7110. I remember paying like $5 for it too when I was a kid! Hahaha! I really like the new sets, they look better, but man I love the price and simplicity of my childhood Lego sets, the only really complicated sets I remember as a kid were the big Technic sets like the 8466.
5:44 Rausy-thing. Ah, yes! My favourite animal! :D
I feel their sets are getting alot better, an example of this is the modular building, but the prices are becoming worryingly expensive
But in the video 2017 was cheaper per piece?
I think LEGO is not getting worse in quality, but they have definitely exhausted all possible Star Wars set ideas. (Just my opinion)
Ali Qais Al salman I’ve always considered that set a ripoff since it’s just only half a walker
One bad set ...wow
Lego wasn't allowed to see the actual scene. Disney is to blame for that one.
@@daarianaharis the cloud city set is exactly what it needed to be. The exterior of the city is nowhere near as iconic as the interior scenes.
7:22 The Raider and Obi-Wan Kenobi's legs are mixed up! He does have a robe on, not a jacket!!
Etienne Hebert Great call my guy! I would have never caught that
I think it’s a bit of Both.
I did! Next time I will actually look at what my hands are doing!
LEGO is getting better but the price is getting worse
I assume the rat-mousy thing is supposed to be a womp rat 'I use-to target womp rats in my T16 back home, they're no bigger than three meters. ''
"Mat-Rousy", I think you'll find...
Man forget both of them, I’m still rocking the 1999 model. It’s so cute.
Lego price is getting worst than ever now
Did you even see the video?
Yes the price in Euros got worse 19.99 dollar but 29.99 euro....
worse**
Why not look at real Lego, instead of this licensed bollocks.
All this licensing is ruining LEGO.
I don’t even collect LEGO. Why the hell did I sit through this
I think LEGO is getting too many branded sets like Star Wars and DC. I like sets like the modular buildings, but that’s just my opinion.
Who else got triggered by Obi Wan and the Tusken raider's legs being the wrong way around
The newest MTT proves that Lego is getting worse.
definitely, some aspects of lego do get better tho, but that remake was awful
I agree.
THAT'S A BETTER SET!!!!!!!!!!!!
And new battlepacks are getting worse too . Instead of getting 4 soldiers , we get 2 " engie/jedi things " and 2 soldiers .
cant really base the overall production quality onto one giant downsizing.
i agree the old mtt should get a rerelease, but god...the latest ucs sandcrawler, slave one and most of the rogue one sets...damn...heck...i even bought the resistance bomber because it is such a nice set and i dislike that new trilogy they made.
Maybe due to the newer lighter colour pieces.
3:11 no, if the instructions have the same number of pages and the 2017 have less parts then the 2017 instructions are more explicit
I have noticed that newer parts parts brake more easylly from wear and tear.
They haven't lost their cool factor by any means.
darth_Dan Lego Expert Builder 8888 (Technic Ideas Book) FTW!
This is the new ASMR.
Thank you!
I’m not lying but I honestly don’t know how I found this 20 to 30 year old man reviewing LEGO
Same dude
I think new is better on almost every aspect/or they are the same. One downside is that there isnt R2D2. Instead there is that braus mosey thing that seems to be low quality. Stickers seems meh.. but you can just ignore them. 3CPO looks way better now than back then and so does Skywalker. I prefer 2010 ship color but that's just me.
7:21 the Ben Kenobi figure isn't wearing a jacket, you switched the legs with the tusken raider's so his cloak isn't complete
You didn't even compare price in Euros, and 2010 piece is cheaper that 2017
Have you noticed he put Ben kenobi’s legs on the Tusken raider and the tusken raider’s on Ben XD. 7:20
Both!!! The detailing is getting better but size and piece counts are getting way smaller
When I was a kid my memories of playing with Lego don't come fro sets, it was buying random parts and pieces in bulk from eBay and seeing what I could make of it.
I have the 2010 set dude I’m getting flashbacks
1:56 this zoom ins are kind of scary like the website has details about a murder
It's not getting worse. It's just getting more expensive.
I would like to point out that he swapped the legs between the tusken raider and Kenobi...
I can't believe he missed that :D

I had a Technic minifig! In fact, maybe I've still got one
You are absolutely right about old studfull technic beams being strong. Many people specifically use those to give their MOCs sturdiness.
But why I like the studless technic more are the following reasons-
It was black for Rogue One, and it is white for The Last Jedi, it has nothin to do with how good it is
this guy just speak about nothing for 9 minutes...
What did you expect when you clicked on this video?
This comment proves you're a child
@@CyberCat617 ... ok lol
Then why did you click it?
@@mrpapa1018 Wtf... u are so dumb... 😂
2:10 shouldn't inflation be valued in there somewhere?
here because of your video about 30k sub monetary video, got a new sub so checking out your vids
The prices are becoming higher. One thing to keep in mind is the piece quality and diversity is increasing. I personally feel that prices should be lower.
Ah, now obi looks like he’s wearing a jacket because you’ve got the tusken legs on him, I believe
The evolution of a set that has had so many re-releases feels less advanced with each release and sometimes is even a downgrade to the previous set of that model.
dude this guy got the names mixed up, and at 7:23 u can see he got the legs switched....
5:39 I wonder if he means old Ben?
When you have a couch and decide to sit on the floor instead. Lol
It's more comfortable than the couch!
Interesting video, thanks for making it, I need to look at adding some star wars lego to my collection
An inconclusive video... not nearly enough evidence
I just think it’s ridiculous how much LEGO costs, it’s damn stupid
Oh my God, I remember I got the 2010 model ages ago on Christmas eve.
