  • There are 25 SECRET FLAGS in Jamaica in use today, yet people know only one. To celebrate the Independence Day we shall look at the National Flag of Jamaica and all the other flags that are currently in use in Jamaica. The colours of the National Flag of Jamaica have a strong link to Africa, but there is much more to discuss when it comes to the origins and history of the National Flag of Jamaica.

    Here comes Jamaica Independence Day Special Episode! The topic of flags is often viewed as something boring, but trust me - it is not, at least not when it comes to the origins of Jamaican flags! 🇯🇲 I hope you enjoy this investigative video, while I'm preparing the episode on the "Local Media vs Jamaica" for next weekend! Thank you for all the support!

      I love my Jamaican people 😂. Always crack me up. I knew the history of the flag but I can’t remember how I learn. When I was young there was some effort to educate us on Jamaican history. In one instance we wrote letters to thank the government for special extra books like those on Anancy stories. Also some teachers ignored what was mandated and gave us extra information on our history. Most of my information on Jamaica was from teachers against the grain, my family especially grandparents and tv specials. Jamaica definitely needs to do better. As for the flag I growing up it was gold for the sun, green for the land and black for the people 🙂. Nowadays you have to say hardship for black but it was the black people struggling so I just ignore that😅. I wonder if our flag is still in the African congress. Not sure if it is the anc. At one point we were the only non African flag but I lost the history. I was not aware of the other flags. The crocodile flag is familiar but I never consider it official.

I did a research paper for my university class here in Canada and I found out that nanny was my grandmother's third grandma because my grandma was born 1898 and she lived to a hundred and five. I could not stop crying because I now know where my resilience comes from to survive ten years of blindness. Still I got up and went back to university to get two masters degrees. Only a Jamaican. I have been away since I was five years old but I still carry the kick ass resilience no matter where I go.

      Sadly, many of us weren't taught much about what happened prior to 1962 with the except of Slavery. We have to search long and hard to see the changes of the flags at midnight that year. Many of us were not aware also that, prior to that same year, we all were British Citizens and, travel on British Passports. The British Pound was also our local currency and, was changed in the year of September of 1969.

    I always feel like am in a classroom when am watching Irine's videos. The question that was asked on how does Jamaica benefits from being a member of the British Commonwealth?....absolutely none, the British government don't even like us...we need visas to go there even after we helped them fought the Germans in WWII, and help them build back their country. That's y we want Jamaica to become a Republic and get rid of the Queen as our head of state once and for all.

      Trevor Steer... I wouldn't call the (flag, ie, Lion of Judah) Jamaican tradition, for that would include all Jamaicans... Don't you think? That flag is associated to rastafarianism and nothing else, according to history as far as I have seen. Maybe you have additional information to share?

    • @trevorsteer7331

      @@patriciabarnes7034 , I didn't say "Tradition", I said "Culture". But you do have a point in that it does NOT apply to ALL Jamaicans. However, a lot of NON Rastafarians in Jamaica "embrace" it...at least, that's my personal experience growing up and travelling back to Jamaica...i.e., you see the Symbol or Flag all over the place.
      And so, TO ME, their Flag is just as much a part of the Jamaican "Culture", as Rastafari itself; or do you not think Rastafari is part of the Jamaican Culture?
      P.S.: I am not a Rastafari, but I have Facemask, Caps and T-Shirts with the Lion of Judah Symbol.

    i was just about to drop my comment, cussing about how dare you to dis' RastafarI by not mentioning the lion of Judah flag, and there you go, saving one of our most important flag for last and even stating that you could not do a video about flags of Jamaica and not mentioned THE LION OF JUDAH!
    And for that, I thank you, and a job well done!

    Thanks, Irina for another gem! I had no idea this subject had any chance of being interesting:-) but, I could listen to you all day long. I wish there were a detailed record of the meeting that decided the final design. What were the criteria? Was there an art or design advisor on hand? I won a competition once for my logo design of a new CARICOM agency. The senior staff requested changes to the colors I chose. In the end I think their judgement was correct and it revealed a clear aesthetic which the English Caribbean shares with countries in Africa - as you rightly pointed out. Or, it might just be...coincidence?

    Irina, Jamaica is not only apart of the Commonwealth of Nations but Jamaica still has Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State ("Queen of Jamaica"). Most of her ceremonial and constitutional duties are carried out by the Governor General of Jamaica. In addition, Jamaica's highest court, or court of final appeal, is the Privy Council in England. So much for Independence!

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, I'm well aware of this, that's why I said - I'll make a separate video on the subject after I do a proper research, because "Head of State" that has no power is not really Head of State. So, the question is - what Jamaica gets from it and what Royal Family get from it. I don't understand how either of them are benefitting. Interesting subject though, will have to dig into it.

    • @jamdawgutube
      @jamdawgutube 3 роки тому

      @@JAMAICAWITHIRIE , Irina, I used to think that ceremonial duties, especially those enshrined in countries' constitutions or codified into law, were just for formality, ceremonial, and or symbolic purposes until the attempted coup in the U.S. These things ("powers") can seem insignificant- in fact, we tend not to pay attention to them- until these "powers" or duties are challenged, interrupted or interfered with. For instance, the Governor General ("GG"), the de facto Head of State, who represents the Queen and appointed by "Her Majesty" on the advice of the Prime Minister, has to give his "royal assent" to a bill before it becomes law. The GG also opens Parliament and appoints members of the Services Commissions, among other important things that allow for the proper functioning of Jamaica's democracy. These seemingly insignificant things, if they are not properly observed/if ignored, can lead to constitutional crises and the death of democracies. In any event, if there is no Queen, then there would be no need for a GG. Alternatively, if Jamaica changes its Constitution, then there would be no need for a Queen or GG as Head of State. The same goes for Jamaica's highest court, the UK-based Privy Council.

    For a person who wasn't born in Jamaica, you've done your research, our Jamaican
    Flag is unique, the cross in the Jamaican Flag is there to represent Christianity.
    Jamaica has the most Churches per Square miles in the world, and the Fastest
    Runners on earth,
    The Black triangles represent the hardships ( associated with our colonial past and
    History of enslaved people ) The Green triangles represent our Lush green Land, and
    the golden diagonal saltire cross also represents one of our prized resources- golden
    Sunshine,
    In recent years, however, the meaning has been updated to ''The Sun shineth, the Land
    is green and the people are strong and creative'' The Government thought it was necessary
    to embrace a more positive representation of the Flag.
