Have you ever wondered where the flags of each country came from? Well wonder no more! Let's go over the origins of each national flag, as well as where the design of the modern flag came from.
The sources that I used were either simply Wikipedia or anything that was made by Whitney Smith, the founder of the FIAV and the one who came up with the term "vexillology", which I talked about in Vexillology Volume 1 (What is Vexillology). He made multiple books explaining every national flag (which I may or may not have pirated), although they're somewhat outdated at this point. He's also the editor of every national flag page on the Encyclopedia Britannica, so you can trust that it's a reliable source. Admittedly though, I put some of my own theories in there as well, like with Belarus' green stripe, Morocco's reference to the Marinids, Libya's reference to the Senussi, among others. Like I said in the outro, if there's anything I missed or got wrong, please let me know! I'll put any corrections in the pinned comment.

Estonia 🇪🇪 has got to be my favorite flag, it’s colors are just so nice and the fact that it matches Estonia’s landscape during the winter perfectly is just the nice little bow on top.

Fun fact: the idea of using white between red and blue in the French flag was suggested by the Marquis de Lafayette. Considering how Lafayette came from a long line of medieval nobility (the first Marquis de Lafayette fought alongside Joan of Arc), I assume he was taught the rule of tincture and think it's not a coincidence that he suggested a metal between two colors

    Which flag is your favorite?
    Corrections/Addendums:
United Nations (justsomeonewhodoheroicacts): Not a flag that I mentioned, but it has 193 member states, not 192, can't believe I rushed past that.
Cameroon (me): Before the current flag they had a flag with 2 stars for the unity between French Cameroon and English Cameroon. Cameroon's increasing centralization, including changing their flag to only include 1 star, is why English Cameroon (Ambazonia) wants independence.
Kazakhstan (bonchemin): The flag of the Kazakh Khanate was likely not the inspiration for the blue color. Instead it might come from the blue stripe on the flag of the Kazakh SSR.
Georgia (user-gr9fq9gt9w): Georgia's flag might date back even further to 1200, since a recently discovered coin of the king at the time featured a symbol that looks very similar to Georgia's current flag. Although I didn't include it in this video due to the "approx. 1350" in the Wiki article lined up with the naval map instead.
Romania (funfoxvlad): Alongside the Moldavian coat of arms, the other part of Romania (Wallachia) had a naval flag with the current Romanian colors, which is also likely where they got their inspiration.
Argentina (duncanmann): Historians often attribute the blue and white colors to the House of Bourbon, which I considered strange because the Latin Americans Wars of Independence were inspired by the French getting rid of the Bourbons, but you can take it with a grain of salt, although there are also other explanations
Israel (me): The reason why the flag has two blue lines is because it looks like a ṭallit, which is a piece of cloth worn during prayer, and it also has a lot of stripes on it.
New Zealand (osama_been_lagging): It has 4 stars, not 5, lol.
Egypt (kfir fecher): Saladin established the Ayyubid dynasty, not the Abbasid dynasty. I literally got the image from the wiki page of the Ayyubids, I'm just an idiot lmao.

Yeah but he got one fact wrong.
The colors are from the House of Borbón in Spain.
Ferdinand VII wore a stripe with blue and white similar to the Argentinian flag.
The original revolutionaries of Argentina were monarchist and were doing the revolution in the name of the king (imprisoned by Napoleon).

  • @AverytheCubanAmerican
    @AverytheCubanAmerican Рік тому +104

Additional flag facts I'd like to add:
    - The Cuban flag was designed in NYC by revolutionaries living in exile in 1849 (famed Cuban hero José Martí also lived in NYC at the time). The current Puerto Rican flag was also designed in NYC (modeled after the Cuban one) as the Cuban and Puerto Rican revolutionaries worked with each other. To honor NYC's role, Cuba gave the city a statue of José Martí on horseback in Central Park.
    - The reason the flag of the former Greater Republic of Central America was inspired by Argentina's is because when Argentines serving under Hipólito Bouchard raided Spanish outposts in Central America as part of the Argentine War for Independence, the locals saw that flag as their first free flag from Spain.
    - When the Brazilian flag was first adopted in 1889, it had 21 stars. But since 1992, it has 27. This is because they are for the 26 states of the country as well as the Federal District/Brasília, so stars have been added for every new state.
    - The Aussie flag isn't the same as New Zealand's lol. You missed the big star on the bottom left corner. That's the Commonwealth Star. Originally it was six-pointed to represent the six original states of Australia, but a seventh point for the Territory of Papua was added in 1908 and to represent all future territories.

Fun fact: When kids in primory school ask about the Y in the South African flag, most teachers tell them to find a buddy and tell them to put one hand together (one child left hand with another child right hand) to form a bowl, the teacher would ask what they see in the creases of their hands and the kids would see a Y. The teacher would explain that the Y stands for the Y in UNITY and together they can make the word happen. Of course South Africa is a mix pot of different races, cultures and religions so it's a bit important for teachers to teach kids to work together. Personally, I was a logical kid so I always found that explanation stupid because you could do it yourself without anyone as the other half but I see it now.

Not countries but two favorite flags of mine are St Pierre & Miquelon (unofficial) and Macau:
    - The Macanese flag has a lotus with a bridge and lines for water below it with stars above it. The lotus flower in full bloom represents the everlasting prosperity of Macau (which they're certainly not wrong about that; gambling being banned in Mainland China definitely helps). The bridge is the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, that links Macau Peninsula with Taipa. The bridge and water represent Macau's position as a port and its important role. And like the stars of Hong Kong's flag, the stars represent the PRC and Macau's relation with it, only this time the stars are yellow like the PRC's flag instead of red like Hong Kong's. And what brings it all together is the nice shade of green in the background.
    - The St. Pierre & Miquelon unofficial flag has the flags of the Normans, Bretons, and Basques on the left side to symbolize the people who resettled the islands in 1816 (fighting between Britain and France led to settlements getting destroyed over and over). On a light blue background, there's a giant yellow ship sailing on some waves, representing the Grande Hermine, which brought explorer Jacques Cartier to St. Pierre in June 1536.

Only in English it is pronounced with the S (and in other languages influenced by English...)
But even in English, the official name of the country is "Lao People's Democratic Republic"
The only reason the "S" is even pronounced is because the French which colonized and gave the country its name, wrote it with an S, despite the S is not pronounced. (Like French like to add useless letters on words...)
And English-speaking people just read it as Laos and not "Lao". It's just English pronounced the word wrong and it just stuck.
In the Lao language, there are no "S-ending" letters in the Lao language.

    • @IvyYoshi
      @IvyYoshi Рік тому +5

I'm an American, so correct me if I'm wrong, but while Laos is pronounced "Lao" in Lao (the language), it is not in English, in just the same way we pronounce France with an æ instead of one of the French nasal vowels, ɑ̃. On the other hand though, we don't pronounce Thailand with an ð or a θ, we pronounce it with a "t".

When the first few extra states started being added to the Union after the original thirteen colonies, the flag was given additional stripes as well as additional stars. This very quickly became impractical, so they reverted to the thirteen stripes for the original thirteen colonies and then continued to just add a star for each additional state.
In fact, the Star-Spangled Banner that Francis Scott Key saw when he decided to write the poem of that name featured 15 stars and 15 stripes.

And so, the Extra in Exile space arc comes to an end, with the reveal of branching off into alt history mapping, and, from what I can tell at least, you already have quite a lot of *prepares matpat voice* LOOOOOOOORREEE! planned out for it and vexillology volumes. Quick spoiler warning ahead as I go more in-depth on my general thoughts and theories to do with the episode.
From what I am able to tell (aka what we're given), EBM seems to be in charge of the rules of the cards, and can use them to do a lot of things, from making a tornado to go into space or to manipulate probability with the gambling card (during the green horde/EBM fight scene). This already makes EBM an incredibly powerful character (no wonder they're extra's guard to keep them in Exile), which brings us onto Extra. Given the end of the video, Extra appears to be an incredibly powerful reality bender, capable of transferring themselves and anyone with them to wherever they have a drawing of, or anywhere in general given both a pencil and eraser, potentially capable of doing a spongebob and erasing the universe with a literal string. This means that Extra could beat goku. EBM is technically containing someone who, with a relatively common object that a student (like extra) would normally have on them, could rewrite reality and beat goku, hence making whoever put extra into Exile stronger than goku if extra had a pen and an eraser, but this whole aspect will probably be explained in the alt history mapping thing, whenever you get to that point in the story. Upon waking up (from being LITERALLY DEAD), extra also mentions green horde being from their imagination, hence having another incredibly powerful reality bending power - with some limitations, being that you can't control your own creations. From the contract green horde was trying to make extra sign, we can also assume that extra has the ability to BESTOW PLOT ARMOUR, at least to a limited extent, which also helps explain all of the deus ex machinas - Extra is essentially the god of this reality we're peering into from thier perspective by watching thier videos. I am really looking way too into a university student's balls now, am I (take that out of context, I dare you).

A widely accepted theory about the origin of the Argentine flag is that it's based on the colors of the House of Bourbon in Spain. When the news about Carlos IV imprisoned by Napoleon began to be spread in the Americas the revolutionaries in Buenos Aires proposed governing themselves until the Bourbon monarchy was reestablished in Spain, instead of following the viceroy. So they used the blue and white colors of the Bourbons to show their loyalty to the monarchy.

I have a huge amount of ideas for video's that I've written down before even making this channel, so I usually pick out one of those, or add some to the list if I come across something interesting. The script for this video is the longest out of them all, but it's usually the shortest part of the work besides editing.

I guess it is pretty easy to come up with a video idea, though for me it's very hard to find something that I actually want to make and that I am interested in too. I do always find the editing to be very enjoyable though.
It's also great to see a content creator make such good and humorous Polandball content. Keep it up!

Very nice video! Been meaning to watch it for a while now. When talking about the Egyptian flag 21:36, you mention Saladin as being the first caliph of the Abbasids, however I am fairly confident that he was not, but was the first caliph of the Ayyubids.

12:38 honestly very likely the whole peace between the catholics and protestants was the main idea of the flag, with said colours being derived from lienster due to it being more catholic, and orange due to the orange order. As since the wolfe tone revolution, basically all irish revolutions aimed for such an equal republic

The Norwegian flag is *intentionally* similar to the Danish one.
Most of *our* nobles died off during the plague.
So when Denmark and Norway entered a personal union our upper class ended up becoming tied to the Danish one, partly nobles with land in both kingdoms, partly goverment officials educated in Denmark and loyal to the Danish king.
Being ceded to Sweden happended without our consent.
So our flag was made to reflect our close ties to Denmark while also recognizing that we where also under Sweden and our own thing as well.
Our flag has layers upon layers of symbolism as a result.

    • @levsi
      @levsi Рік тому +1

Adding red, white and blue was indeed a tactic to get "approval" and pay homage to both Denmark and Sweden. But it was also inspired by the french flag and the revolution they had. A wish to be free and independent in the future. It's really hard to imagine a better design for Norway, especially at the time it was made.
And the often disputed story of its origin is also a fun little puzzle. Did one of his sons draw it, or did Fredrik Meltzer make it himself?

Well if YOU'RE not gonna explain our flag because you don't "trust" us (which is funny you ironically pretend the US government is innocent), then *I* will explain it. The red star and red background represent anti-Japanese sentiment, the bloodshed by revolutionary Korean patriots, and the might of the people united to support the DPRK. The white symbolizes one bloodline, one land, one language, one culture of our monoethnic country, which lived in purity. And blue stands for the gallant visage of our people and symbolizes the spirit of the Korean people fighting for world peace and progress.
I will say, kudos to you for putting the Korean unification flag at 0:37. It's a flag we hope to fly as our national flag someday once a peaceful reunification is achieved.

[47] "It seems possible, though not certain, that after the conquest Mehmed took over the crescent and star as an emblem of sovereignty from the Byzantines. The half-moon alone on a blood red flag, allegedly conferred on the Janissaries by Emir Orhan, was much older, as is demonstrated by numerous references to it dating from before 1453. But since these flags lack the star, which along with the half-moon is to be found on Sassanid and Byzantine municipal coins, it may be regarded as an innovation of Mehmed. It seems certain that in the interior of Asia tribes of Turkish nomads had been using the half-moon alone as an emblem for some time past, but it is equally certain that crescent and star together are attested only for a much later period. There is good reason to believe that old Turkish and Byzantine traditions were combined in the emblem of Ottoman and, much later, present-day Republican Turkish sovereignty." Franz Babinger (William C. Hickman Ed., Ralph Manheim Trans.), Mehmed the Conqueror and His Time, Princeton University Press, 1992, p 108
