From Millionaire To Bankruptcy - The Evander Kane Story
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 січ 2021
- On January 9th 2021, it was reported that San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane was being sued for over $8 million in court. Just two days later on January 11th, the former 4th overall draft pick announced that he had filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy!
Given that he has earned over $53 million dollars during his 11 year NHL career to date and will have amassed nearly $90 million by his 34th birthday, that really does beg the question: how on earth has Kane become bankrupt? Watch to find out:

If you ever feel broke, just think about Evander Kane.
Can't feel bad for a clown that use to post all kinds of pictures with stacks of cash. Hahahaha. Maybe he shouldn't have gambled so much and acted like such a lowlife.
@@24renslips I wonder how much he wants for that mercedes?😂🤔
@@24renslips true, but i wonder how much debt he had already racked up by that point?? He had to still be in Winnipeg at that point, maybe he was a gambling addict at an early age??
@@24renslips I have never felt bad for him, he seems like an asshole from that pic in the hotel and wearing what he wants in team meetings, i am amazed how how much $$ he has lost over 10 plus years in the NHL
@@24renslips he might just have a bad attitude for someone who knows he got the skills to pay the bills lol sort of haha
His bankruptcy explains why he wants to fight Jake Paul so bad, he needs that pay-per-view money.
*No point... that fucking idiot would probably bet on himself in his own fight and end up losing the fight and the money. He's addicted to mismanaging money.*
Maybe but who wouldn’t want to get the chance to beat up Jake or Logan Paul
He doesnt have a big enough name to fight Jake Paul.
@@johncohle8331 - Well that's weird. Because I have no clue who Jake Paul is.
@@ghostlack - Well clearly THAT's not OBVIOUS to me. And while I'm not center of the world. Paul isn't either.
Now it makes sense why he wouldn't pay his bill at restaurants in Winnipeg.
spent it all on tracksuits
@@barrys7515 he really really deserves everything that is happening to him. He thinks he is better than the rest of us and his money makes him special. Well I hope in the end he has to work for $20 an hour in disgrace and spend the rest of his life paying off his debt.
I also recall a tweet from Evander this summer where he said something roughly like, "we need to grow the game so that revenues will increase, and NHL players can make as much as NBA players." Sounds to me like this guy tried living life as though he were an NBA superstar rather than a decent NHL star.
If a 54 million payout isn't good enough for you then you've got problems. If he really wanted to be rich he would've invested that money
1.5 million in gambling? Damn and I sweat just buying a $5 scratch ticket.
You need to make some life changes
If I had $1.5 million, the last place you would find my ass is anywhere near a casino or anyplace that sold lottery tickets. I would feel like I already won the lottery in life. It is one thing for broke people to gamble and play the lottery. It is entirely another for supposedly wealthy people to do so. Even after taxes, his money should be setting him and his family up for life.
@@davester1970 I could live on $1.5M. With no issues at all.
@@LordStanley94 - If I had $1.5 mil in the bank, I would retire today! At least if I was still working, it would be because I really want to and I can work under my terms so I don't have to suffer at the whims of a tyrannical boss.
My house was paid off almost 20 years ago. I have no debts and fully funded retirement accounts. Where I live in the US, I can easily live on less than $10k per year. I love the fact that I am in a financial position where I work because it gives me something to do and not because I have no other choice.
I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I was making Evander Kane money and being the minimalist that I am.
@@davester1970 some of these clowns have no concept of a dollar and/or have lost complete reality on life. I am not retired, 49 here. But, I tell you I can live off (if mortgage paid off) similarly what you stated. I am almost a full minimalist. There are certain things I like and if I can afford it and want it, I will buy it. After all, we only live once and a little something now and again is good for the soul. None of this crap we own can we take with us when we die. So hell, might as well enjoy a little bit in this messed up world. I can literally live off of $700-$800 per month. As in having the money tis yoyo 🪀 makes/made, I would certainly keep working in doing what I love to do. But, working for some tyrannical ass or bitch, I would be G O N E...gone! Stay safe. If I can ask you, which state do you live in or would recommend where costs are low? Thanks
I could live the rest of my life and secure my children's rest of their lives with the money he made. Won't ever feel sorry for people who are so rich and blow it all away.
Gee a guy that posted a pic of himself on social media with stacks of cash is bad with money? YoU dOn'T sAy
I’m WAY more sympathetic to Jack Johnson’s bankruptcy than I am of Kane’s. Johnson’s was brought on by his parents. Kane just completely fucked up on his own.

He has trouble taking responsibility for his actions, i fully expect him to find a way to blame others.
Hi Anna
He did it to himself and has no one to blame. It’s sad because he probably got some really bad advice or was trying to take of his friends and family. I’m surprised there aren’t more stories like this, but the NHL does a pretty good job teaching younger players about money.
@Bringithome Donald You’re right. Tyson had Don King digging in his pocket. I read an article years ago about how many NFL and NBA players went bankrupt within 3-4 years of retirement. It was scary what happened. Reebok did right by Alan Iverson by insisting a large portion of money went to a trust he gets later on down the road.
No. Kane was reckless with money. He took out massive loans and advances on his contract which he blew. He was living like he was making 40M a year.

Gambling addict...pure n simple....addicts spend every cent they can get their hands on...drugs gambling...makes no difference..,...however his habit of just walking out on restaurant n bar tabs shows an arrogance that throws gas on the addiction fire....in my opinion filing chapter 7 is just a bigger version of his walking out on restaurant tabs....he doesn't have the maturity to face the music ..."oh...if I file bankruptcy I don't have to pay them? "....let's do that!....he makes enough to make repayment arrangements with creditors but that would take hard work and slot of lifestyle adjustment.....too immature and arrogant.
Big difference between filing Chapter 7, and Chapter 13. Typically most high income people have to file chapter 13, and when you file Chapter 13 debts can’t be discharged, you get put on a court order payment plan to the liquidators over how many years the liquidators agree to. Chapter 7 most of the debt can be discharged, but typically only low income people can file chapter 7. Bankruptcy judge will definitely have Evander on a payment plan since he’s still cashing large NHL pay checks every month. Plus Evander will have to attend a 341 meeting which is basically him meeting in person every creditor he stiffed, and they will ask him a million embarrassing questions about his finances and what the hell he did with the money etc, after that the liquidators send that info to a judge. I mean, he’s not having a good time lol
I agree you have to come to grips with th problem. If he doesn't he'll end up like Joe Murphy living on the Streets. Sad.!
Its always a good day when OMR drops a video. I wasn't expecting this one so soon though!
How can someone be so bad with money.. I could live for the rest of my life with just his one year salary.
$150 last longer in your bank account then a million
I think that's what everyone thinks until they have it.
If you're bad with money, making more won't help. It doesn't matter how much money he made, he would have blown through it all.
If my wife and I scored 52m.. it would be the end of our marriage. She would turn into Oprah - And you get a house, and you get a house, and you get a house..and so on..

His dad named him after Holyfield. At least he's followed in his footprints his entire career
Now all Kane needs is an opponent to bite his ear off.
This was a very thorough video, well done.

Try doing pushups with all that debt on your back Evander. Hard to feel sorry for the guy.
Well.... the past 6 months shows that this video needs a part 2!
I remember when he posted the money brick phone and said to myself, this guy is going broke. Immature. It’s sad to see.

Addiction doesn't care how much money you earn.
He needs plenty of help.
I also don’t feel sorry for him. I can’t stand people who think their actions doesn’t have consequences. At least Johnson was duped by his parents, Kane didn’t seem like he cared about racking up so much debt. Hell, he even tried to get out of it!
He has mannnnnny skeletons in his closet and is QUITE the scmuck!!
“The guy has made 50 million dollars in his career .... what has happened hEeeeeREeeeeee”

How many times have we seen this story play out...lol. 🤦🏾♀️ they just don’t learn
Bro sounds like Evander has been I’m hot water for years now.
Imagine being the only current NHL player that goes home to his cardboard box every night
It seems that the stories of him walking out on dinner cheques n Winnipeg hold water.
Although I don't feel bad for him going bankrupt, I'll always appreciate him knocking out Matt Cooke.
That was awesome
Greatest achievement 👏
One punch
Nothing like a Brit (and I mean it respectfully) providing us NHL reporting. Love it! You know your hockey! Keep it up!
He'll definitely rebound financially after his season with the Edmonton Oilers..
Oh probably this one too
Every time the narrator said "the canadian forward" I drank a shot of vodka. I'm in the hospital now.
Dominique Hamel hilarious....
Isn't he great folks?
He's here all week...😂
It boils down to addiction
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. I guess the pushups will be easier without stacks of cash on his back now. Karma.
Couldn't have happened to a better person!
The Jets (True North) offered to provide mentors and put up his father from BC but they were all declined. He once parked his hummer in the middle of the road (blocking traffic), went into a restaurant and after being informed that there is no valet service he asked the patrons if they would go park his ride and no one did, so he promptly left.
That's quite the journey. Remember, all - if you have to gamble, gamble responsibly.
Or just don't be Evander Kane.
Oh what another great video 📹
It is surprising that anyone who becomes a millionaire as a teenager comes out of it without a grand ego and are good at money management.
It should be standard practice for any new players to get both financial education and personal counseling but...you can't make a horse drink you can only lead it to the water.
Wonder how long it'll be before alimony gets thrown into the mix.
Ouch! Sounds like he's about to get MANSCAPED!!
For the next what ever happened to can you do Ben Scrivens?
Hahah no one cares
Somebody check him for a concussion clearly he's not thinking things through when it comes to money
As a Winnipeg resident I can confirm Kane is getting EXACTLY what he deserves right now.
As a vancouver resident edmonton fan hes fuckin the league up considering the animosity. People are too quick to hate
What's sad is how many athletes in other sports having to grow up too hard too early too. NFL, etc. It's common and I believe many players try to help the hard headed rookies. I have lots of respect for success stories. Seems Kane has been given the chance a few times and hasn't taken it. C'mon Kane...settle some debts and wake up each morning proud of yourself. We'v all been there. You at least have some talent to bury this past.
Only critique I have is that you keep saying he has made over $60m when he certainly hasn't. You're taking home maybe 55% of your salary, especially if you're living in California or Canada because of taxes, he would also have agent fees, management fees, union fees, etc.
The site that he uses to get Kanes earnings already accounts for all that so he has made $55m in his career.
Ohh... so that's why he went broke. He only made 25M... that explains it.
British Columbia and California do Have THE WORST Property Taxes, that's definitely one reason, with The Gambling Debts tho, I think it's Safe to say Evander Kane isn't Financially Wise... Hopefully one of the Paul brothers Answer the Bell.
Yea and the east coast is is following suit now
Not sure if it was reported, but I wonder if Kane has been investigated whether he ever bet on games he was playing in?
What the hell man. How hard is it to keep things simple? Earn a pay cheque. Deposit it. Spend only the interest. That simple!
Why is it that when a player takes a penalty in a game (unless it legitimately saved a goal) it's a negative, but when yearly stats are compiled, total penalty minutes are viewed as a positive?
NOT ENOUGH ADS GUY, MORE PLZ!
Winnipeg was very glad to get rid of him
This will
Eventually lead to jail.
I'd say what Evender Kane did is a classic example of why you NEED to learn how to mange your money and find a trustworthy expert to help mentor/coach you on money and finance. What you don't know, can and will hurt you.
That and he also needs help with his apparent gambling addiction.
lol this goes way beyond simply mismanaging money, somebody making that much can spend money like its going out of style and still have a shitload leftover, like lets say an evander kane made 10 million a year and 6 million after tax, blew 4 million of it every year, thats blowing through $330,000 a month and hed still have 30 million left over after a 15 year career and thats with your money sitting there doing zip for the entire time, if it was never invested and just sat in a low interest checking account and never grew itd be around 30 million so this isnt mismanagement, its more like an unimaginable level of stupidity
@@parkjungmoon694 Do not underestimate the ability of a young man (or woman for that matter) who's grown up without ever having much money suddenly having millions to blow the money on stupid things, especially if you add in, say, a gambling addiction. History is full of people who did just what Kane did. Look it up, most (or at least many) lottery jackpot winners are bankrupt within a few years of winning the big one.
Add to that, when it's wide public knowledge, such as with a lottery jackpot winner or young pro athlete who just got a big contract, people will line up looking for a piece of the cash.
@@Seriously_Unserious lol so you are assuming that kane grew up poor cuz he's black? kind of a racist assumption there, maybe he grew up in an upper middle class family like colin kaepernick and lacked for nothing, yeah i dont really care if somebody is racist i just figured id point that out that others may perceive it as such.
@@parkjungmoon694 I said it because they literally said in the video he was not wealthy before he got that big contract. Assuming I'm being racist because we're talking about a guy with a particular skin colour is VERY racist.
@@Seriously_Unserious that doesnt mean shit by itself, not wealthy respresents 99% of the population, if you are a doctor making 300,000 a year you still arent even in the 1% yet, so he could've had doctors for parents and had the cushiest childhood ever and he still wouldn't be wealthy, almost every pro athlete who ever lived didn't come from money except for the tiny handful that had athletes as fathers such as stephen curry or patrick mahomes or the only one i heard of whose parents were actually filthy rich was mike piazza whose father vince was worth an estimated 100 million even before mike made the major leagues so basically every athlete in history has gotten rich and tasted money for the first time upon making it to the show, so thats really a poor excuse to blow your money. maybe you can argue that all the middle class NBA and NFL players had the advantage of better financial education but lol considering all the idiots in the middle class that cant handle money either, living on credit cards and debt, etc, maybe its not really much of an advantage in the end.
*kane owes money*
*kane walks out*
debt gone! easy enough right
That’s prob why he’s always so angry on the ice lmao
Yes, Has had a lot of penalties lately
May be he is not the sharpest knife on the drawer.
Like my dad always told me it's not how much you make, but how much spend....
A wise man also said that half the battle is getting rich. The other half is staying rich.
Wow. Could have taken care of his wildest dreams and his entire family for generations to come, instead he totally fucked it. Honestly, he is the peak of selfishness. What a shame.
He’s got to learn to know when to holdem know when to foldem !!
Amazing how a lot of these players have their best years or at least very solid when on an expiring contract? Borrows 8 Million bucks and somehow seems to think payments are optional?
Or that he dosnt have too pay taxes
Hate the manscape ad but so happy for ya.
His money situation is just like his beard : thin, patchy and shabby.
With the 20% NHL contracted Escrow, Federal and State taxes, Kane will be bringing home about 2.7 million from the original 7 million dollars a year contract. (I know lots of other fees and tax breaks are here, but I put out these numbers to show how completely screwed he is.)
Ah, so that’s why he wants to fight jake Paul
Here’s the question when does he start screaming out it’s racism can’t wait for that one
Give it time
Gambling...drug habit? Classic car collection?!
Why all these loans?
Wasn’t there a pic of him holding a big wad of cash like a cell phone? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Can we do an update on Kane?
I like the narrating in this video
Even if you have $1.00 in your account your wealthier then Kane
I read somewhere that if you have $10 in your pocket with no assets and no debt, you have a greater net worth than at least a third of those who live in the US.
I look forward to your video on Conor McGregor!!
Couldn’t have happened to a better player. 😂😂
Good lord. I don't even.
Odd your videos are awesome. But constructive feedback. Talk about points per game (PPG) instead of giving us raw stats. 51 pts in 83 games means nothing. 0.75 PPG is easily understood.
1:26 i died 😂😂😂😂
now whats that word im looking for.... its not filthy rich, but its something along the lines of that. I think it describes this man fairly well.
Vegas wasn't built on winners the house always wins.
WOW! 😳
Although I don't like him, I can see how this happens. With such a huge contract when he was 18 years old, the money could easily have created this situation if he didn't have good influences surrounding him or good financial knowledge. Unfortunately it looks like this was the case. Reminds me of the youth that had won the lottery a number of years ago in Europe (i think).
Reminds me of me when I had gotten my first job and my first year of pay, if only I knew how to save money then 😕
If you ever feel like an epic loser, just think Evander Kane! You'll feel much better!
Update he is still with the team but has been suspended for 21 games
And right back to millionaire. San Jose was the worst place for Kane. You can tell how welcome he feels in Edmonton
Kane got owned by Chara during one fight. What a loser.
someone shouldve helped him get an accountant n i know some accountants r shady. maybe his teammates would've helped him find a reliable one if he wasn't such a pain towards them..but i dont like the player but i hope he gets things figured out for his families sake. otherwise hes gonna be in debt with child support . maybe sell his homes n get smaller homes for the time being
9:42 nice
I'm sure big Buff is laughing in his fishing boat
I remember watching Kane knock Matt Cooke the fuck out at The Thrashers Game.
I’m a Sharks fan & was disappointed when Kane was brought onto the team. He generates more dumb penalties & drama than anybody else by a huge margin. He’s a wasted roster spot.
Now he scores on your team and has more discipline fk yall
