  • On today's episode of Jersey Digs, Chris the Silver Sniffer puts the shovel down and takes you to class for a little experiment. We will see if there are any discernable differences between silver coins and their clad counterparts! Enjoy!

Noobish question... If i dig in iron infested site and there is coin between iron trash, if i discriminate iron , detector still see that coin between iron? Or iron will mask it?

It's a tough call. I honestly would allow the iron in and look for jumps in the vdi. I'm planning on doing a test for this exact question. Looking forward to figuring out the best way myself!

Interesting experiment. my son Mason performed the same tests but did it with some coins buried flat and some vertical. The VDI numbers do differ we found whether the coin is in the dirt versus your hand also whether it is horizontal or vertical. All these tests do get you in the ball park though. Thanks for sharing! Keep up the great work. 20 subs away from 300!

Thank you, Mason! For this experiment I was holding them horizontal for a better VDI, but I agree the coins positioning in the ground will impact VDI numbers. I have a few more tests I plan on throwing at the legend just need to find myself some junk metals lol. Thanks again and happy hunting

I hear a more choppy signal with the clad. Silver is completely solid. I'm more of a minelab fan but I really like the legend. It may just be my next machine.

Agreed. I think they only time silver becomes choppy on the legend is when it's at depth. I've definitely mistaken wheat cents for dimes before because they almost share a vdi.

Best you can hope for is 1 vdi higher but it can't be trusted 100%. You were right you need to dig all those tones. The E-trac was really spot on though with the non-ferrous & ferrous vdi you could really tell. Not sure why they didn't include this feature in the Manticore. These kinds of test are fun when its just too cold to go out.

I'd say non ferrous v ferrous for the legend has been relatively reliable so far. Thanks for the view and happy hunting
