Very good and useful video which should have more views. There are literally hundreds of things to be aware about when traveling or retiring in Asia. For me top of the list (besides finances), be humble and kind, respect local culture and people at all times, be patient even if things drive you mad sometimes.

You are grounded & real, as we both know most out there these days are so full of self important's & self indulgence its sad. Your solid advice will help me when i live in Thailand. Yoga & meditation i hope will help me gel with how chilled & peaceful the thai people are. I can be a hot head even at 50, time to relax & enjoy life.

spot on again bro. this is a great place to be, but a person must exhibit kindness. maybe it is because I was born in NYC, this is a piece of cake for me, but I see plenty guys here that do not understand this very simple concept. In many ways, think conflict resolution, conflict avoidance, we are guests here.

That's very true, Jeremy: I totally agree. Many people in Philippines or Thailand can even die because they do not have money for hospital. And I have seen they accept that and let themselves die with an extraordinary acceptance of their own destiny, even if young in age. I heard many of them saying with humility that without work they die, without hospital they die. And they still smile. That moved me a lot. They deserve absolute respect and we have to forget the nature of our ego. Happy to know you are such a man of compassion. Thank you for your video and have a great time.

      I totally agree Franz
Travelling without any knowledge (& an ego as J says) can bring about many pitfalls.
Without people like Jeremy mentioning these pitfalls, many travellers & even holidaymakers would be far worse off.
Bringing much of it live & current as Jeremy does, is priceless to many.

Great video. Yes, please, listen to Jeremy and check your ego before travelling abroad. Learn languages, be open, if you want to travel and live abroad. I've been to thailand and know how things work there for expats (or wannabe expats), Now I'm in South America, two months ago I started to teach english in a University to locals, and english is my third language, along with french. Go figure!

Thanks again for this very helpful video. I always enjoy and learn from you. Your humble attitude is one that I will try to emulate. As for S.E.A. vs U.S.A. there does seem to be a misconception that services are great back home and are terrible in S.E.A. and I find that attitude by some expats to be appallingly wrong. I have never had real good service at any government agency in the U.S. and I always have to wait my turn... so I would expect to wait my turn anywhere else.
As far as medical service I know that people in the P.I. do die if they cannot afford to pay....terrible and sad but that is life for those very kind and hospitable folks.
Anyway thanks again and DO More Life.

Great advice and the same advice in the USA . Where else in the world can you live on 600$ a month ? If you read the news you see the us economy is going to hell . Respect the people and the laws of wherever you are don’t be a jerk and you can live here or anywhere in Southeast Asia . I find the people here a lot friendlier then in the USA

This was your best video yet Jeremy. Common sense and respect anywhere are good traits to have. Every human should be treated with respect no matter where you are. There are great people everywhere and they're also not so great people. I'm sure this is just as true in Thailand as it is in the US. If only the US would strengthen it's control over who is in our country and are they respecting our society and our rules. The problem with the US is that many people here believe that we should be accepting of everything from everyone. And the truth is it seems like from your videos that Thailand guards their national identity religiously, as they should. The one thing that is consistent throughout all your videos is that should always have a back-up plan. I have always believed in that and always have a plan B and a fallback position. I'm not sure if you've done this type of video but maybe you should talk about the negatives? I doubt any place is heaven on Earth.

Tell them Jeremy , no room for egos" in Thailand .
Best policy stay a tourist ,don't get involved in their lives .
It's ALL about place and face , and a FARANG'S place is being a tourist , stay there and enjoy , that's why you went there in the first place , so stay in that space .
    Very fragile/sensitive ego's Thais .
Outwardly very polite ,disciplined in the Asian way ,BUT, you offend them publicly , embarrass them , make them lose face ??,Jeremy you have it right , it's time to move on or you are in a heap of trouble , some dumb Farangs' can't even see it coming .
Another thing don't get a Thai male deliberately drunk , another trouble situation and don't talk down to them
like an Imperial Westerner , you are on their turf , it's their country and they know it and they won't take kindly to your rudeness and bad behaviour , you would be seriously out of place by Thai and Asian standards ,they aren't outwardly loud and out of place the way we are , far far more disciplined / reserved.
So the golden rule , when in Thailand do as the Thais do , keep everything happy and nice ,no ego tantrums, don't get caught up in their private affairs or politics , remember your place is as a tourist $$$$, that's how they see you , your place if you like , there to pay and enjoy .
Don't for a minute think these people are Western especially in the Red light tourist area .
Behind the scenes , they are very very Thai , don't forget that , easily done .
They will carry on like Westerners' to give you a good time , to get your money ,it's business,it's their job .
Some girls will push to move in with you , be a Thai "mia", wife for rent as long as you keep paying it's an Asian thing and she will stay for as long as she can and provide her services for the money , they are after the money, she won't offend you and do as you wish give you a good time till you move on , she isn't your lover or girlfriend , she is providing an Asian / Thai cultural service but she expects to get paid .
If you don't want the service , stop it before it starts because once she is in your place it's not going to be easy to get her out , getting the good money you are paying her, she can't get working in the bar .
Behind that facade they are really really Thai , move away from the golden rules , get involved in their lives , p!ss them off , no winners there , you will be on a trajectory for losing financially , emotionally or will encounter down right trouble , a lot you can't repair depending how stupid you are and how deep you get involved , been there done that , trust me I know .

I have found I can come to a S.E. Asian country, be respectful and be fairly open-minded for a while but I am easily irritated. I cannot stay in any of those countries for more than a couple months at a time. The longer I stay in the Philippines for example, the more frustrated I get about almost everything there and if I don't leave soon enough I eventually can't just "bite my lip" anymore & I snap..often publically and often hurting someones pride. I love to travel, I just cannot extend my stay beyond my politeness limits or be a long-term expat in ANY of the Asian countries. My culture is just too different from theirs. I spent 40 years speaking my mind, not hiding my feelings and thoughts & being truthful, even if that truth hurts others.. Asians grew up doing just the opposite. IMO they are an entire population of hundreds of millions of snowflakes incapable of handling even constructive critisizm. For my own self preservation I no longer stay beyond 2 months... Due to trial and error I now know my limitations & I get out before the shit hits the fan.

    • @okkid1949
      @okkid1949 5 років тому

To be truthful with you I have found that people that think that they must speak their mind as you say you must are in fact people that enjoy hurting others especially those that they think cannot or will not hold them accountable.
S E Asians are actually a lot like people in the USA were from a couple of generations back. Polite, good mannered, hard working and honest.
Since you have such a low opinion of the SEA culture why not just stay home?

Interesting. What kind of crimes are committed via youtube?

    • @JeremyClodfelter
      @JeremyClodfelter  5 років тому

Internet crime is any crime or illegal online activity committed on the Internet, through the Internet or using the Internet. The widespread Internet crime phenomenon encompasses multiple global levels of legislation and oversight. In the demanding and continuously changing IT field, security experts are committed to combating Internet crime through preventative technologies, such as intrusion detection networks and packet sniffers.
Internet crime is a strong branch of cybercrime. Identity theft, Internet scams and cyberstalking are the primary types of Internet crime. Because Internet crimes usually engage people from various geographic areas, finding and penalizing guilty participants is complicated.
Internet crimes, such as the Nigerian 419 fraud ring, are a constant threat to Internet users. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Federal Trade Commission (FCC) have dedicated and appointed IT and law enforcement experts charged with ending the far-reaching and damaging effects of Internet crime.
Examples of Internet crime legislation include:
U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Section 1030: Amended in 2001 through the U.S. Patriot ActCAN SPAM Act of 2003Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011
