Shocking results from tiny cheap light for video and photography

  • Camera buffs think photography and video lighting needs to be expensive. I created useable video lighting using ultra small cheap LED lights, namely some Godox LED36 basic bare AA battery powered lights as vlogging video lighting and it looks amazingly good! No harsh shadows, it actually resembles soft lighting and it also makes the image look SHARPER and seem more in focus than the same shot with soft more diffused lighting. let this video inspire you to not be afraid to use tiny cheap hard lights with no diffusion or softbox to still get cool vlog lighting indoors.
    Note: these lights are pretty weak (I used 4 of them). The next size up, the Godox LED64 is brighter and you would probably like those more if you are thinking of going down this route. If nothing else, this is a fun video for anyone interested in tinkering with video lights for photography, vlogs, product photography or just adding some little spots of light on shelves or around the room.

    Super great idea! Insta-bought 6 of the '64 to experiment with from Aliexpress. Subtle point - the '36 only takes batteries, the '64 also has a non-proprietary classic barrel connector for external AC power. So for indoor/studio use, never worry about batteries or charging if ok with a wall-wart and thin power cord.

    I have two of the Godox 64s, a smaller Bauhn branded one from Aldi, and, as I mentioned, a pocket workshop/hiking LED light I picked up at the local hardware because it has a built in handle/stand, and I was expecting to be walking in the dark on rough ground before I even thought of its photographic uses.

    I created my own lightbar using a thin wood plank and 3 LED strips. it needs 12 volt to work. so you can plug to wall with a cd converter. but ultimately its only 10 AA rechargable batteries to run. and being a long strip of light. although its hard light, it works out kind of difused by default.
    been relying on it to film work on my cars for years and its been a really nice addition to my filmmaking toolbox.

    What about using the 4 tripods with a 5v usb led strip? It would be an entire half circle of light and you can still adjust the height and how far out to the side you want your light. Just a thought. Another plus is they are light and you can roll up the strip to almost nothing.

    sharp & harsh = cheap
    soft = cinematic
    there is sharpness and there is details & texture (example: in resolve there is a "texture pop" effect that is dedicated to mimic details without affecting sharpness, good for making cloth look better and a lot of other things).
    soft detailed look with very rich & dense color is most DP's go to, before throwing on a movie-specific lut
    you wont see "crispy sharp details" with Arri footage or 70mm film. weird that your goal is to make good sensors actually look like it's a computational imagery shot on Iphone instead of going for imax or arri look

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  2 місяці тому

      Lol, I worked in Hollywood for 20 years on some of the biggest movies and even made my own motion picture. I know what real "cinematic" is.
      Ahem. This is UA-cam! This is NOT Hollywood. All these people using the word cinematic on UA-cam is hilarious. UA-cam is a place where people can have fun, share and experiment. It's more real life. Some people out there like seeing sharp details because it's more real and educational. People don't use Arri cameras on UA-cam. A lot of people use cheap cameras and cheap lenses that aren't that sharp. So I am offering tips to help that. I assume you are new to this channel. The general rule here is to chill and enjoy life a bit. ua-cam.com/video/z8Bo5z90agQ/v-deo.html
      and ua-cam.com/video/oZiW4PGURwk/v-deo.html

      @@MarkusPix i know your take but its the enthusiastic approach to shooting photos and vids brings us to educational channels like this one. Why wouldn't it be rational to try and reach for stars and mimic high end production quality with off the shelf things, isn't it kinda the goal of tinkering with gear? Getting highest possible quality with lowest resources possible seenes like logical approach. It can also be fun and chill, i mean, that's the point.
      Would love to see your take on this someday: mimicing the high end look on budget. Keeping your background in mind you are the guy to show us enthusiasts at the start of the path how it's done.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  2 місяці тому

      Everybody is trying to copy the "Hollywood look". It gets boring after a while. What a boring world if everyone mimics the same thing. UA-cam is a place where people can experiment and have fun and NOT mimic others. Its hilarious how newbies think blurry backgrounds are better and you MUST shoot LOG and use LUTS etc ad nauseum. I sometimes LIKE it when everything is in focus. I sometimes LIKE it when things are very sharp. It's so refreshing to see something DIFFERENT once in a while. Does that mean it's to be taken less seriously? Does that mean it's less "professional"? In the world of art, artists are encouraged to express themselves in whatever unique way they enjoy and labeling one style as lesser than another is sad. What makes movies great is not technical obsessions, but good storytelling and artistic freedom of expression. When people say a sharp image is not professional it's like saying the movie "300" was an unprofessional non-serious movie because the style was not high dynamic range. "I coulda filmed that with an old super-8 camera" the UA-cam tech nerds would say.
      All that said, you totally missed the whole point of me pointing out getting a sharper image with hard lighting. I will say it again. A lot of people use cheap cameras and cheap lenses that aren't that sharp. So I am offering tips to help that, so their overly soft unsharp footage and images can at least look normal. I offer solutions to people's problems, and this is one of them. And when making a point, in the case of this example, I need to show an example of how much sharper the image looks to make that point. This does NOT mean their footage will be this sharp with THEIR camera. Do I really have to explain this? Most people do not have money to afford expensive cameras and lenses, so I offer them inepensive solutions.

    • @simarock
      @simarock 2 місяці тому

      @@MarkusPix there is no such thing as "Hollywood look". It's frame of reference to quality of image, where you show exactly what you want to show and style it however you indend to.
      The term "cinematic look" was constructed as clickbait title by color grading youtubers and film students as a selling point.
      Movies not always have blurry backgrounds and dont follow the same exact rules tech-wise. Surely, 300 was intended to look that way, Sin City and a lot of movies. They all try share, however, the same principle: the look is objectively of good quality and high effort. Subjectively it varies a lot and depends on a scenario.
      I am by no means in your comment nerd army complaining about color grading or cheap gear you use. All these points you've made before and these are in no way apply in this topic.
      I get what you are saying with light, no need to overexplain.
      The topic of this video wasn't "add more texture to you shot with harsh light", it was about cheap lighting being effective.
      And the result is quite far from selling point since the cheap light looks exactly as it is: like a cheap light. It adds texture if it's bright enough for the camera, like a flashlight does.
      (Surely, you could, for example, go black and white, for example, which greatly compliments a harsh light, or any other artistic demonstration of how you would benefit from this kind of a setup.)
      All these 100k cameras, raw and 12 bit log and half a million bucks light setups with millions worth of decorations in movies are tools that are a bit extreme to teach how to copy on your knees with few bucks, like some youtubers do. But not to avoid to. It's a frame of reference, a learning point, a challenge to get a similar results with less budget. Isn't it what it's all about?

      @@MarkusPix Thanks, Markus! But the links you provided are for 3 units at about the same price, so more expensive. I have several similar lights, but use them individually. They are useful for supplementary light in impromptu, candid video shoots. I like the Godox ones better since they use standard AA batts, not rechargeables that will not work after a few years.

      Never mind! Adorama (the real source behind the Amazon link) now shows a 4-pack for the original price (about $80). If you get them thru Amazon, the price is the same, but Markus gets a cut, a good thing!

    Yahhoooooooo. Those little lights are amazing, especially how far away you were able to place them from your subject, and still retain light. Day #3 heather eating lots of water, fruit,

    Hey Marcus (or other commenters), what do you think is the brightest on-camera light without an internal fan? I’ve been using NPF battery compatible LED panels for the past couple years, somewhat happy with them but want to find the brightest option that I can shoe mount on my Sony handicam. Thanks in advance.

    Funny that the light stands cost more than the lights.
    I don’t know how to use flash. LED lights work for me in a situation where I need to supplement the natural light. I know I’m being picky. It would be nice if there was a way to charge the light without batteries. For the price what do I expect?

    Okay, Genius...let's go. 'own a BUNCH of those... mainly because they periodically go on bargain-basement sale. YOU may have just closed off those "sales"... good news is... even at full price, STILL cheap...gotta say though...in your example...kinda like the image on left, more. Side note: 'Mmight cut Genius to "Big G"--or just "G"...incidentally...like many--would LOVE to do a no-budget movie with you.
