I bought THREE bec + bridge dresses for a wedding that were all over $300 each and every single one felt like shein. returned all of them and wore a vintage betsey johnson evening gown that i got FOR FREE from my coworker who had it in her closet for 20 years. modern stuff is just made so badly even when it’s expensive that you should always thrift something older!
Does anyone know some other vintage dress brands because IM STRESSING OUT SM BECAUSE I DONT HAVE A NICE DRESS AND ILL SOON GRADUATE AHHH PLS HELP A GIRL OUT💕
i think these days, price doesn’t indicate quality. there’s plenty of “high-end” expensive brands that make their clothes out of 100% polyester. I think it’s more about material composition, and you can find pieces that are made of quality materials at the thrift for cheap!
For Sweaters Alpaca wool is also great and not itchy. Especially for people who are allergic to wool. Mina Le recently made a video about sweaters and how to spot which ones are good quality 😉
I am a jacket addict. Because I’m a commuter and I never leave home without a jacket. No matter where you live, I highly recommend stalking the clearance sales in January for a 3-in-1 jacket. I’ve bought them for as little as $100 in the past (they can cost $200 and up) and they are the best of both worlds. When it’s not very cold (50-60F), I wear just the waterproof shell. It’s breaks the wind and keeps my body heat in. When it’s cooler (40s) I wear the shell and a hoodie, or just the puffy liner. When it’s cold (teens-30s) I zip in the puffy liner. Seriously, this is my most used jacket. Thrift it if you can. But it really is a solid investment.
Tell all your friends when you need an event dress!! Even if your friends aren't your size, they can think of you when they're thrifting! My friend found my prom dress for me at a thrift store back in high school and I got it for like $12.
I’ve been getting my jeans from the Walmart men’s section, they have 100% cotton ones that are super inexpensive but they look and feel GREAT. Any and all fits too, I have some that are more of a straight/fitted cut and then I recently got some baggy carpenter pants that I cannot stop wearing!
I have to try this out! I don't know much about men's pant styles though, do they have any high rise styles?? I like the look of mid rise but they are uncomfortable to wear for me so high rise would be my preference lol
I haven't watched the whole video yet (loving it so far tho), but one thing I think is worth mentioning is that if you have the money, do the splurge if you really really want smething instead of finding cheaper alternatives that you just buy because they're alternatives. Like sometimes you'll find something similar at the thrift that is just equally as wonderful and makes you equally as happy, but I have made the mistake too often of buy*ing clothing that usually I would never have picked up, just because I thought it to be an alternative for something and in the end I wasn't satisfied, never wore it and kind of just wasted my money. I dunno if that makes sense, just thought I would leave that here ☺
I feel like the discussion around "but I would feel cold in that" also depends heavily on how you would get to your destination. If i just go by car (like I imagine most of the US gets around) of course I'm not gonna get as cold as quickliy as if I'm going by public transport (like Austria/Germany/Switzerland - maybe most of Europe)
I think what would be nice to see would also be material literacy and workmanship! Some things that are $15 are obviously $15, some things $70 - $100 are obviously that price because of this. But there are so many fast fashion brands priced high that are just pretending they have good material and workmanship - would be cool to see a video pointing this out
I’ve had my black MORHER jeans for 8 years and I bought them at around 160$. That were my only black jeans that went through thousands times of wash . I just sold them at 60$ 😂 . I’d say not a bad deal at all 😂. Benefit me for years and then they are gonna benefit other girls for probably another years!
I shop in the men’s and boys often! I have found some of my best pieces there! Thrifting, though… Oh, my goodness hasn’t changed so much lately! I am astounded at the price increases and bougie Ness of thrift shopping. It has become so popular, and Necessary due to trend and economy. I have to tell you, I have had to turn things away at the thrift store. I would’ve ordinarily been happy to buy because they were actually close to new prices! It really, really depends on what it is, the brand, the condition before I purchase something, but the upside of it all is that I leave the store with less and I’m a picky or shopper now, which ultimately has been a very good thing. Excellent tips and advice, especially about coats to! I live in a cold climate and definitely need an array of coats for wet and cold weather. I love my wool coats very much and those have actually been my smallest ticket items surprisingly! Some of the thrift stores around here get so overloaded with them that they sell them for very cheap.
This is really helpful. As someone who got my first real job and is starting college soon I’m trying to build a good wardrobe that can last me a long time, especially the foundation pieces
i like how you include different ways a person invests in clothing bc even in thrifting, i do consider "investing" in something when they're a bit more expensive. Some people only use the invest in clothing in terms of buying new expensive items. I rarely buy brand new clothes nowadays but the two things I always plain tshirts and shoes. I just can't seem to get good stuff like these in the thrift store in my area, they are always so worn down
Wait!! I’ve never thought to get plain tees from the little boys section! I’m definitely trying that one, that makes more sense to me than investing in one white shirt! Also, I do agree that it’s the materials you should look for more than the price. You can find SO many great quality stuff second hand, I love it!
I have had the Uniqlo Supima cotton tees in black and white for 3 years now I think and they've held up really well. I also think they're so nice fit-wise and the fabric isn't thin like in a lot of t-shirts.
Love your videos!!!!! I love how you manage to pull off such amazing fits and immerse yourself in the fashion world without developing a fashion expense creep (like lifestyle creep). I find that lots of girls do that as they transition from one life stage to another with more personal income, but its such a great reminder that you can develop yourself and your fashion identity without breaking the bank or equating style and quality to wealth directly.
If y’all like the oversized hoodie look and like some weight to them I cant recommend the men’s Carhart hoodies enough!! I got my bf one 3 years ago and he wears it constantly and it’s still in great shape and looks super cute whenever i kidnap it. The Hanes hoodies inner lining I’ve found kind of wears down after a while and pills a lot (although this might be down to the way we’re washing is so not sure)
Sunglasses are worth getting discounted in my opinion - you can absolutely tell the difference between cheap Made In China sunglasses and designer Made In Italy sunglasses omg
Yes to rewearing event dresses and turning around the one-wear culture!! I have a Ted Baker dress that I got on sale in 2017 that I LOVE and I have worn it to seven(!!!) weddings. It always gets compliments too.
From Canada and invest in a good winter coat, winter boots, waterproof booties etc .... get it! LOL Also invest in a good blazer, belts (not that gucci belt) but a nice leather belt (generaly goes from 100$ ) and a good cobbler they will revive that paire of shoes!
i crochet and knit and acrylic yarn squeaks when you use it too. its also just plastic so idk i don't like wearing it (but im not a yarn snob i just have sensory issues)
100% invest in good quality shoes and if you can afford it, have enough pairs to rotate so they don't wear out so quickly. You don't need to have an excessive amount
HEAVY on the little boys’ shirt!!! those women’s mini tees that have a perfect length for low-waist jeans are expensive but any basic kids’ shirt would look just as good and w a cheaper price too
absolute agree on fake leather sneakers, the way the material feels and creases is so different! also the WARMTH, its way warmer in real leather sambas than vegan ones for example!
I buy like 95% of my clothes second hand and this video made sense to me :) I don't think it was pretentious - the tips about things like shoe creases helped me figure out why some of my clothes look 'messy' which always confused me
I find that the more I spend on a hoodie or crew the more I love it. The stuff around 100$ is substantially nicer than cheap stuff. My 40$ hoodie that I wore before I got into fashion was super pilled and never held its shape vs my champion and stussy hoodies have held up way more over like 5 years.
That’s why I invested in jewelry because if i ever remembered to take off jewelry before a shower, it would be at least a month before I put something back in and my earring holes repeatedly closed due to this
I find that I look more and more at the composition of clothing because of your videos. I ALSO find that if it isn’t able to tumble dry, I feel like it isn’t able to hand life y’know? I know it’s not a good factor anyway bc tumble drying is bad for your clothes but it IS a pretty good crucible.
Gettees is a small business from Detroit Michigan and their plain tshirts are long lasting and affordable. They’re a little thicker and soft and they’re a small biz… worth every penny
I have a black tshirt that is absolutely perfect from the little boys section of the thrift. It’s an XL “husky” style 💀 and the material is SO thick and high quality and it’s a perfect cropped look. Husky little boys are the most underrated fashionistas of all time
Does anyone else feel like expensive brands are becoming more and more popular ? I see micro influencers with maybe 10k who splurge on every single clothing item and it’s harder and harder to find recommendations for cheaper alternatives that aren’t from the amazon influencers. Like why is every girl wearing the same 200$ dress ? I like that this video reminds us of what’s worth investing in
I know this is such a late comment and probably no one will respond to it, but if anyone knows the brand of the short black dress at 18:42 or anything similar, please let me know because it is the most perfect dress I have ever seen
is that black sparkly dress from the brand candy rocket? it reminds me of 3 dresses i got from 3 different thrift stores all by that brand. they're all sparkly bodycon dresses with that neckline and one has an interesting back, similar to yours. i call them magic glitter dresses because the glitter doesn't shed everywhere and they're def from at least the early 2000's but probably the 90's
I can always feel acrylic sweaters when I see them lmao, they LOOK like a sweater but the don't feel like one at all! Also, does not keep you warm if you actually need that
I love them! I will say I’ve probably only worn them 20 times so far so I can’t really speak on the wear/tear. But they’re true denim very little stretch!
it depends on the type of wool, mina le did an hour long video on sweaters which I recommend, it's called something like - why clothes are poor quality now. but itchy wool can be high quality depending on construction and the type of wool and how long it lasts. you just probably need to wear something underneath or not have sensitive skin.

Waiting on a bus stop in winter is HELL literally freezing temperatures and you're just standing there 😭
thrift stores have great winter accessories. a lot of times people donate handmade items (it makes me sad) but they're really cute and unique
True! I've found nice hand-knitted things and also bought these funny Christmas earrings that are made out of paper, but they're super cute and weird.

it depends on the type of wool, mina le did an hour long video on sweaters which I recommend, it's called something like - why clothes are poor quality now. but itchy wool can be high quality depending on construction and the type of wool and how long it lasts. you just probably need to wear something underneath or not have sensitive skin.
