ksa-xcom Your English is quite good! Katie Kerr Saudi Arabia is Muslim, so there are rules that apply to women that we don't have in America. I knew a female teacher of English in university whose "Arabic" students apparently thought that a woman shouldn't teach men. She said she had trouble with them. Try China.
Aquarian Christianity thanks. Yes there’s a lot of people think that female teacher should not teach men. But i think women are better a billion time then men. If the ask me to choose women or men i will choose women. The most people who say ( women shouldn’t teach men ) the are not used to it’s not about the rules.

@@fj2132 Hi the most common program is EPIK for public school jobs. There is alos Hagwon (private academy) options but you have to search hard and well to make sure its a decent work environment. I have more videos on my channel on this subject if youre interested since Im currently in South Korea teaching. Hope this helps!
I live in South Korea and it is honestly so safe. North Korea is there but no one is worried. He threatens things all the time and never actually does anything. The expat communities are great and I've also made some amazing Korean friends as well! I would highly recommend.

I worked in Hanoi as an English teacher in a kindergarten for 3 years and loved it. The pay was much higher in my experience and was earning sometimes more than $2000 a month (paid by the hour of teaching) . The lifestyle is great, it's cheap and easy to make friends. I left Vietnam to work in Istanbul, where i am now. The lifestyle isn't quite as good- the hours are much longer, the pay is equivalent ($2000 salary) but I get housing and utilities included (as well as my flights to turkey and one home again at the end of each years contract.) and Istanbul is an incredible place geographically. I get a lot of vacation time in a year and I can easily travel all throughout Europe- especially in the 6-8 week fully paid summer vacation each year.
Get out there and do it! It's the best thing I've ever done!

If you want to learn Spanish, learn it in the Canary Islands like I did. It is the fastest Spanish I've heard. Now any other Spanish spoken sounds slow and I can understand every word!
I'm British and have lived in the Canary Islands for 15 years and speak the dialect fluently. However I wouldn't recommend learning it, as it is a very lazy version of Spanish and we drop ending letters and slut phrases in mere words. It can make a learner lazy and take syllable shortcuts and when they listen to dialects from Galicia and Catalan, it really does sound remarkably different. I like the dialect, but if you're any to learn a recognised and clear and precise dialect of Spanish, I don't recommend Canarian! Xx
Well put together video but there here are a few notes from a UA-camr who's been living in Asia for the past few years making videos about the industry:
- The market in Korea is very saturated and salaries have been stagnant for years.
- The JET program is extremely competitive to get into. Most people who apply won't get into it.
- You need to be qualified teacher back home or have years of experience for most jobs in Singapore.
- Salaries in China are a lot typically a lot higher than $1200
- With Vietnam they hit the nail on the head - one of the best countries for lifestyle and saving. Where I've been based for the last 2 years.
Hi Alex! Been watching lately some of your ESL-related videos. Can you fill me in how long are the ESL contracts in Vietnam? How about in Indonesia or Spain? Will appreciate your feedbacks as I'm thinking of trying ESL jobs overseas soon, preferably on a country with a Yearly contract. (aiming on vacations at least every year). ;-) Thx!
Vietnam can be quite flexible with teaching contracts. Some as short as 6 months.
We don’t focus on Indonesia or Spain currently.

Alex Stevenson Appreciate your immediate reply. I have an English Teacher friend in China (my first choice to teach English, at the moment), but he said China prioritize Native English speakers. Aside from being Non-native (Proud Filipino here ,😊), I finished two years in College too (undergraduate). May I still get good chances of getting a good teaching job (w/fine compensation) in Vietnam, provided I'll take TEFL/TESOL? My other great concern is I'd need to bring my mom (only immediate family), ASAP. Will it be possible in as soon as second month of teaching in Vietnam? Lastly, online I see most TEFL courses available, but according to one teacher TESOL is "better". Which one is really better or widely recognized internationally? (Confused now which one to take soon..does it depends which country I'll teach Englis too? Or will both have be credited as a good "English Teaching Certificate?") Sorry for bombarding you with these questions. Thanks a lot in advance.
Hey Stacey. Vietnam is definitely more open to non native speakers than China. TEFL and TESOL are essentially the same thing. Rather focus on the accreditation of the course than the terminology. For example, a fully in-class course with over 6 hours of observed teaching that's accredited by a university of college.
TEFL is not a viable option anymore. No matter which country you go to, you cannot save money. This is because of housing costs. In every country, a good apartment would be about $1000 USD a month. But the salary is sometimes less than that or not much more. In Korea, the salary is about $2000 USD so it's possible to live in Korea. But in a lot of other countries, it can't be done!

You can make WAY more money in China than any other asian country. #1 Is the middle east, #2 is China
A.J.'s Adventures in Asia do they accept non native English teachers?
In Morocco you can learn perfect French and Arabic and the flights to Europe are around $100 .. That's gives you the best of both worlds + the cost of living is much lower than Europe .. Look into teaching in American schools in the major cities.

1st step is to pick the cities you would want to live in (Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangiers, Rabat ...) Then google the websites of the private school and language centers in those cities as well at the websites of the American schools there .. then send your resume to them with a cover letter that describe you.
South Korea is pretty safe... N. Korea has been like this for last 60 years... Best internet in the world and wonderful culture..^^

dandiiiful You should realize, madame, that your job will be exciting at first, but there will be frustrations for sure and things you won't like about teaching. There will be, as I've heard, things you won't like about China, and expats who complain about China, but if you keep a positive attitude and stay in the country you should get a "traveler's high" again. I've heard about such things, and I'm 47 and considering teaching in Portugal or Brazil to learn Portuguese. I'm saying I'm 47 because my age and experience in life makes me more realistic, not that I've taught in China. However I've taught foreigners English several times, and do teach. Best wishes!

Very informative however there is the little matter of race preferences in the hiring process. My research over the internet (mostly here on youtube) indicates that some countries in Asia prefer to hire white people over black people despite the latter having similar qualifications. I wonder if this is prevalent in Latin America and Eastern Europe. I apologise for bringing up this uncomfortable topic but as a black man venturing out of Africa to teach english and travel the world "situational awareness" can be the difference between being miserable and being happy. I love that you asked this question, people often overlook this topic when talking about job opportunities. I’d imagine that it depends on the company, and the location. Colorism is sadly a huge problem in Asia.

Bebe C. I noticed that the black people already teaching in Asia and other parts of the world are american. I think being american gives them some credibility though they still go through some challenges landing a job for obvious reasons.We need to know what non american black people are experiencing,if any. Seeing as there are no known black people from non native english speaking countries I suggest that we volunteer as test subjects for the rest of the aspiring black english teachers then share our experiences here to help those who will come after us. Yes it deserves a channel .

if you apply to public schools in korea, they offer home and medical insurance. In Korea, English teachers usually travel to Southeast Asia during vacation.flight tiket to Southeast Asia from korea is very cheap .In addition, there is a culture in Korea that respects teachers. I'm currently teaching in Thailand and came through Greenheart Travel and Xplore Asia. My term is almost up and I now have the travel bug so this video was SUPER helpful in narrowing down some potential options for the future. I may even be back in amazing Thailand to work at one of many international schools that typically pay more than the listed average. I was surprised to find that out too. But of course, you can only find them in the bigger cities where cost of living also increases...
i work and live in china, ive been learning mandarin. class sizes are around 30-40 and its sometimes difficult but its the best thing ive eveerrrr done. my students are the funniest people and i love it!!! anyone thinking of teaching english, do china!

kinda true. I tried to teach russian and german abroad
I taught English in Thailand, South Korea, and now China. I also taught online for almost 3 years. I think China has been the best so far. Easy job, few teaching hours, and long lunch breaks. You also get a paid month off for Chinese New Year. Thailand was chill too, but the money was awful. South Korea was my least favorite. I worked at a private training center and was expected to work over 40 hours a week and was always being watched from my boss. I ended up leaving Korea in the middle of my contract. So far I would choose China over any of these, maybe Taiwan is next! :)
Try Vietnam. Outside of Hanoi etc. Pay is good. The hours are 20pw. Nice slow pace. My housemates did China for 3 years and said Vietnam was far better lifestyle-wise. Each to their own though :)

I am from Durban, South Africa but spent the last 19 years working abroad as an English Teacher - I have degrees in education and a TESOL certificate, which I got in Bangkok. I worked in Singapore, Malaysia (in 2 cities), China (in 5 cities), Kazakhstan and now I am in the country of Georgia. I also spent 6 months studying in Paris, France and 3 months in Panama and Colombia-traveling and I have traveled to several other countries. All the places I worked at were good in terms of salary and other benefits, however Georgia which is so beautiful, but pays extremely low salaries - there is a government program which pays GEL 500 (USD 250) a month but even private centers don't pay very high salaries - so I have been here for 3 and half months - I did some part-time teaching at a private language center (in Tbilisi) and did some traveling around - this was like a working holiday but now I am moving on. Thank you for the information-it was very helpful!

Great informative video...I am a four time veteran Peace Corps Volunteer & have explored many of the countries you included. I was a community health volunteer, but did do a lot of informal conversational English by default. My last assignment was in the Philippines from which I migrated to Thailand to complete a month long TEFL certification. Life happened since that time & I am now anxious to get back on track with a TEFL job. I have scoured the internet, Craigslist, Dave's ESL Cafe, etc. & managed to find a private school in Peru willing to take me on board. I'm set to travel there at the end of July. I'm hoping it will give me a nice springboard for making this my full time gig & travel at the same time. Thanks again for sharing this video with all the "travel junkies" among us...Cheers
I taught English in Beijing, China for two years and it was the BEST two years of my life! I had a great 2 bedroom apartment on the top floor of a high-rise and traveled to MANY cities in China during my 2 years and was still able to save thousands of dollars for when I returned to the US! :)
Did you know Chinese before you went there? Did you learn a lot of Chinese while there and did you feel like you MUST know it to survive? (Just asking so I know the demand for the language before I could actually learn it.) :)
I took one semester of Chinese before moving but only as an observer (I worked for the University) and only focused on spoken Mandarin. I DID learn a lot of Mandarin while living there but not as much as some would as my job was to teach English and ONLY speak English in class. I worked hard and in the evenings was preparing lessons plans, etc., and on my days off the last thing I wanted to do was study! ha What I learned, I learned from immersion in the country and culture. You could easily go to China and teach English without knowing ANY Mandarin. I learned everything I needed to say to survive (order food, ask for things in supermarkets, give directions to taxi drivers, hold simple conversations with strangers, etc.) fairly fast. :) Most Chinese do speak some English but are VERY hesitant to use it for fear of getting something wrong and being embarrassed. What’s up Vagabrothers? Could you elaborate on the different certificates (TESOL, TEFL, etc.) someone can earn to teach English abroad? And could you explain how you got involved with teaching English abroad? And how to avoid scams in regards to teaching English abroad? And how to make the most of this experience?
you have to do your research on how to avoid scams!! I'm teaching in South Korea at the moment and I had to avoid scams like crazy. One good way is by joining FB groups. Ppl really help and are really honest.
I'm on a TESOL right now.. TEFL is the old cert now it's been replaced by TESOL. TESOL = Teaching English as Second or Other Language. TEFL = Teaching English as Foreign Language.

I taught English in Berlin without CELTA but had a Masters. After 2 years, I did CELTA and it seriously increased my professional efficacy. If you can afford it, do CELTA or another 120+hours certificate before you teach. I don't teach TEFL anymore but went on to do my PhD and teach in universities. TEFL changed my life for the better, I had never considered teaching before. A truly enriching experience.

Hi Scorpio, I am a native English speaker. I had a contract with set hours and health insurance, however, these days it's a gig type job in Berlin. Most people work on a freelance basis so they must do their own tax returns and are not covered under the public health insurance scheme etc. I think there are more stable jobs if you wanted to work with kids. I would say that trying to get corporate training jobs is the best. I'm from the EU so I can work all over Europe but if you're not that could be another issue. Search 'The Local Germany' and 'Indeed Deutschland' to see if there are any jobs.

Is JET just for native speakers? I'm completely fluent, but English is my second language. I speak it just as well as any American though.

You can make a lot more then $4000
Also if you have a family or wish to start one, it's the best.
Very kid friendly (parks and children's play centers )and the best hospitals , free to have a baby. My youngest son was born there. You can have a lot longer hospital stay
(1 to 4 weeks )with a friendly hospital staff that gives you so much help with your new baby.
Very very safe and so much fun.

We saved a good deal but we were a married couple so two incomes.
I worked from home and only worded three hours a day (when my son was napping and after he went to bed) and all day on Saturday. (When my husband took care of our son)

What kind of jobs (as in which sectors / schools) would pay around 4000? Any information you have would be super useful. Did you get hired through a company or a specific contracting company? IF you have their names, could you pass it on?

I love how original and informative your videos are! Do most programs want new grads or can you start teaching a few years after graduating?
Some programs have age restrictions. So ultimately it depends on the country and program/company that your most interested in. I'm Currently on the JET program, teaching as an ALT (Assistant Language teacher) in Japan. This program has no age limit. Although most of those I have met on my program start after completing university, there are others like me, who start two or three years after if not more. Hopefully this is helpful.

That wage in China can't be right, I make three times that and i only work 25 hours a week... And my housing is free. China is pretty lucrative, and they desperately need teachers, especially if you're a native speaker you're going to make good money and save a lot (best place to pay off those student loans, it's a fact).
The language barrier isn't that bad, use google translate, and toilet paper is easy to find, just go to the grocery store. It's a little lonely, there's not a lot of other expats here but the expat community is tight and welcoming. Just stay in a 1st, 2nd or 3rd tier city and you'll be just fine. I really like China, I don't think you gave it enough credit.

Great video! Thanks for all those useful tips. However, I'm a bit bummed that the tiny Mediterranean country of Malta wasn't mentioned. The ESL industry is one of the major contributors to its society as it is directly linked to tourism, which is the country's number one sector. The best part is that everyone gets to have a holiday while working or studying as you get to "live on the beach". Its blue beaches and interesting Mediterranean culture make it a place to get a truly unique experience plus it's right next door to Italy and Morocco!

I've been thinking about teaching English abroad for a little while now. This definitely helped and broaden my idea of where I could go.
Teaching abroad already for 12 years. Taiwan is a great place to live but it’s very difficult to save money unless you live there for at least 2 years. 1 issue with Turkey is that the language centers never pay their teachers and it’s almost impossible to legally work there . Vietnam is considered the best country to teach in Asia at the moment

You didn't mention Hong Kong! :) although high cost of living the money is still amazing (US$3000 per month- can save a lot and pay off loans), it's a great hub for exploring Asia, good balance of East and West cultures, a good balance of crazy skyscrapers, nightlife, restuarants but also a short vus trip from incredible hiking and biking trails in the mountains and gorgeous beaches. You can also hop on a short ferry to surrounding islands any time. Most teachers would get hired at one of the hundreds of private English learning centres or at kindergartens. One of the best places to teach in the world for money, travel, culture. Visa is easy too

I really like Hong Kong but I'm worried about the insanely high cost of rent. Also, it's harder to find a job there. There are less jobs to begin with, and English is already well taught in public schools.

Good video. Three things I learned about teaching ESOL overseas: Avoid on-line TESOL courses like the plague. Many countries won't give you a visa if you have one, and many companies won't even consider you for employment if your degree was obtained on-line. Ditto for TESOL certs that are under 120 hours. (I’d go for 140 just to be safe.) Lastly, get a copy of Mark's English Grammar Shortcuts and MEMORIZE it. Saves a BOAT LOAD of headaches.

I taught English in Russia, this is where I come from, and then I moved to the USA and started teaching ESL in San Francisco, now I'm a college teacher and I absolutely love it.
My cousin lives and teaches English in Tokyo, my friend lives in Shanghai teaching English and loves it and my brother taught English in central Vietnam near Phong Nha which is gorgeous but also very remote!
What a great video! Colombia is an amazing country, not only can you teach English, but also learn Spanish, and salsa dancing as well! I’m currently working in Dubai, at an International school, but the cost of living is very expensive and the load of work and pressure is very demanding.

Colombia is awesome for English teachers. You only have to have the TESL certificate or a Bachelor and you can teach. People is amazing especially in the northern region if you don't mind the eternal summer and the international teachers often get paid much better than local English teachers even if the local have more experience.

I recommend China and Taiwan, both places that I have lived and taught! I also recommend South Korea, only visited, but may go back to work there. And don't worry about the language barrier. I lived in China for 3 years and got by just fine with very minimal Mandarin. But if learning the language is your thing, fully immersing yourself in the culture is great.

I'd like to suggest Poland as well, to anyone reading. I spent 5 extremely happy years teaching English in Poland and no the salary wasn't massively high but I lived very comfortably and made life long friends with some amazing Polish people. I'd been in China for a year before that and that was actually hell (despite the amazing money) but Poland was wonderful. Just an idea :)

Come get this money guys! Been doing it in China for almost 5 years! Plenty of jobs and salaries are on the up n up. Super cheap and most of the time you get a free apartment. You dont need a car here so theres not many bills to have besides your phone which is like 10 bucks a month.

Great video bros- I live and work in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Things are changing here so fast it is hard to keep up. I really like it and love hopping over to Bahrain for the weekend. The salary and perks are all pretty great. I've even traveled deep into the Arabian desert to see Madaen Saleh which is like Petra. Life here is changing and is opening up especially for women. I can only imagine once they open up the tourist visa- the curiosity alone could bring in major tourism.
I love my students and know this was right for me. If one wants to try the kingdom - you will need some prior teaching experience on your CV. One thing you could cover for those curious to go abroad - is really a persons mindset. I know the reason I have enjoyed my expat and teaching adventures is my attitude. I don't take it for granted that I have a working visa (iqama) and that these are once-in-a-life-time adventures.
