"THE HETFIELD METHOD: Do you do any specific exercises before a show to help you loosen up? James Hetfield: “- Not me! I’m fine. Kirk has some things with his elbow and wrist and sometimes his fingers, and Rob with his forearm. He’s got a few issues, but for me the only problems I have are calluses building up on the finger bone under the skin that come just from playing too much. But as far as muscles go, thank God, I’m doing fine.”
How does James Hetfield stop his arm locking up with tension during extension bouts of live riffing?
“-When you see a sprinter running he looks really bunched and tight and focused, but you see slow motion footage of him and his jaw is swinging and he looks really loose! He’s swinging as fast as he can, but he has that looseness to him.
-That’s what guitar playing is like. You can’t be super tight without that looseness or you just tense up and you’re working against yourself.
"-You gotta be loose with it. It just takes practice. What I’ll do is just go as fast as I can for as long as I can, and when you feel that burn just chill out for a bit or take a stretch and then go for it again. Pretty soon you’ll find you can go longer at it each time.”
Do you have any advice for playing complex syncopated riffs while singing melodies that are very different?
“-It’s hard. At first I couldn’t do it at all, but now it’s second nature. Take My Apocalypse off Death Magnetic, for example. The rhythm of the guitar is doing the complete opposite of the vocal.
Singing along with That Was Just Your Life is tough too, as there’s a part where the vocals go, ‘I close my eyes and find it all fit into place’, where I’m playing a counter rhythm on the guitar, which gives me real trouble.
"-You know what? It just takes practice! What I do is slow the riff right down and just figure out where my hand should go during a certain word. It takes a lot of time, but you will eventually get it.”
You have an unusual way of holding your pick using your thumb, index and middle fingers, as opposed to just your thumb and index finger…
“-Yeah, I’ve always done that. That’s the way I hold a pencil. School teachers would whack me on the hand and say, ‘That’s not right!’ but it just made sense to me. I tried it the other way to see how it would feel, but there’s something about having that extra finger that stabilises the top of the pick. Otherwise it moves too much.”

It’s so nice to see that syncopated question and answer - especially about This Was Just Your Life. To my mind, it’s the most difficult sing/play on all the albums and no one seems to ever talk about it. I’ve tried here and there to be able to do it and it’s very, very difficult. Doable for someone who only has to play music for a living, very hard for someone who only plays as a hobby. It’s an absolute beast of a section!!!

I wish more people realized the beauty of downpicking. It just sounds so much more aggressive than alternate picking when it can be applied. A prime example would be when Dream Theater covered Master of Puppets. I was like "what the hell? they're playing it wrong! These guys are all like super musician virtuoso's -why are they playing it wrong? It sounds weak!" My former guitarist who used to be able to downpick ridiculously fast thinks it's because they simply didn't do downpicking exercises. He eventually stopped doing them himself and can't downpick like that anymore even though he is better at guitar now than he was then. It guess it just takes commitment. I happen to think the commitment is worth it -because it sounds f'king awesome! I don't understand how some people think you can't tell a difference.

with some people, their arms just simply can’t hold up to the challenge of that extreme downpicking. how hetfield does it almost effortlessly is because (as said in the interview at the top of the comments) he’s playing it loose but super fast. it’s a weird trick that he’s managed to master which is how he’s able to so effortlessly downpick and shred.

"Do you warm up before you go onstage? James Hetfield: "With the guitar I can pretty much go out there cold. I don't really have any solo or harmony stuff to do early on in the set, so by the time we're doing that I'm pretty warmed up. I might do some down-picking just to loosen up the muscles in my right arm, but I don't sit down and do a routine.
"I do some vocal warm-up work, and I've found that's helped immensely. I've never been afraid of it, but now that we are doing two and three-quarter hours a night, three nights in a row, I need to do something to preserve my voice.
"Your voice is like any muscle, you need to stretch it before you go work it out, and that's something I've only just discovered."
How hard is it to blend the roles of rhythm guitarist and singer, when your rhythm work is quite a handful on its own?
"Not that hard, actually. I had piano training when I was younger, and a piano is a 'two sides of the brain' thing, as is singing while playing rhythm. Obviously some of our songs are easier than others, so I work harder on the more difficult ones.
"It's all a case of concentrating more on one role than the other in the appropriate places. But it's more or less second nature now."
Down-picking is an integral part of your technique. How did you develop the strength and speed that this approach requires?
"It was always a kind of contest - who could down-pick the fastest - and mostly it was a battle between me and Lars, actually. It's a hard thing to do well, because your timing has got to be dead on.
"If you're playing eighth or sixteenth notes then you've got to get cooking. A lot of practice is called for to build up your strength. A lot of wanking too!"

Nice clips! Another clip that I would include here is from Mexico City ‘93. The version of Eye of the Beholder they play during the Justice Medley is nearly STUDIO TEMPO (I counted myself) and James does all of it with downstrokes (Kirk as well). People generally regard this as the era Metallica started to slow down, but James reminds us he’s still got it.

Kirk Hammett: "We were drinking at the Carlson house one night, and Lars turned on the tape deck: "Listen to this, man. Fostex Multitrack Mesa/Boogies with James playing the heaviest riff ever!". It was the main riff to "Master of Puppets," which had been quadrupled on all four tracks and sounded super heavy. And I knew it immediately as this joke riff that James would always play on the D string. He just dropped it down to the low E string and it was suddenly this whole other thing."

12:50 The Four Horsemen. For all James' credit, I have always wondered how he does that downpicking triplet with such speed and precision. Both Kirk and Mustaine have always played this riff with an alternate picking, as I think most people who tried to play this riff did.
And just look at how he counts for Kirk during the break. It's like "I'm the rhythm here!"

Its not all downpicking. But I do agree that it looks very different when he plays a lot of riffs and I can understand why people think it is downpicking only. It looks different to me when he plays Damage inc and Battery to. Not downpicking, but I have seen people who think it is. (Even with songs like Fight fire with fire, definitly not downpicking)
I have "studied" him many years but havnt really figured out exactly what he is doing. Execpt a really aggeesive style, he has said that he wanted to be a dummer. And he is almost like a drummer but with a guitar in his hands sometimes 😎
But I have noticed that his triplets is extremly fast sometimes though, maybe it is so fast so people dont even notice it sometimes 😘 I dont know, but thats my best theory why people see downpicking everywhere.

    • @ihti20
      @ihti20 2 роки тому

@@JohnnyRockG He did not just want, he is a drummer indeed, and pretty good. Damage, inc is downpicking, if you mean break riff. Seek and destroy, blackened, creeping death are fully downpicked. Sanitarium should be, too, but here we see alternate, he's exhausted sometimes. I've heard that intro to disposable heroes is alternate, though it's slow. Anyway, it's ok to play that alternate, but that's a challenge, we all don't want to fall behind😬
