- This video has been in the making for a few months, since August I've been building this kind of tribute for Metallica's 40th anniversary.
This is my way to pay tribute and homage to my favourite band since I have memory, a lot of years of great music wich has been with me through good times and bad.

- *Metallica didn't play a show until march 1982, so the 1981 in this is kind of wrong, that's completely on me, sorry. I hope that doesn't ruin your experience watching the video*
- I know I made some word mistakes so bare with me on that
- I wish I added some other Metallica show highlights but, as you might know, the video would be even longer

The evolution of James' voice is astounding
James is one of the Only metal singer whose voice has stood the decades of touring and thousands of shows and still has power and tone. The other is Sully Erna of Godsmack. We just saw them live this past Sunday and his voice is actually Better than it used to be. He has More vocal control and tone than when he was younger.
@@VanAnon51 his voice has 100% been hurt. In '94 I believe he blew his voice out. Maybe it was '93.

I think in 81 they just wanted to be Diamond Head. I love how they eventually found their own groove. Great video!

There are a lot of ways to improve, but wanting to is a big part. I'm always a little envious to see different singer's progressing with as many resources. I've had so many sore throats, learning by myself, I laugh in fondness.

I feel like modern Metallica shows are more a celebration of the music and the Metallica family, than the “we’re here to smash skulls” early days. As a fully functional adult, I strongly prefer to see Het up there having fun.
6:40 Seattle '89 was half a year after the Grammy performance, where Metallica during One went from a great metal band to THE metal band. The changes in Hetfields eyes, voice and appearance during the song are insane (look it up).
It was a good time to be young and a fan of Metallica.

Say what you will about "modern" Metallica, but there is no denying they are the best live band. I have never been to a shitty Metallica show.
They still kick ass but age really has weighed in the last 10 years
dude my first metallica gig was gelsenkirchen 2015 been a fan since im 8 or something , they played metal militia, king nothing, disposable, fucking unforgiven 2 (!!) and FRAYED ENDS ! its was legit the best night of my life to this day they blew me away
I agree! I've been to 4 shows. All before their haircuts. Lol. I'm a 50 year old man now,but I've seen the more modern shows and they still going strong, so, yes, I don't think I hey could do a lousy show! Rock on!
Sadly many have been to a shitty Metallica show. The sound engineers they have now are too technology dependent. Their tones are dookie since 2015 on ward. Their FoH sound was also compromised. Not so much raw feeling anymore. Way too compressed. It's sad to see. But they themselves are great.

Jason and cliff can’t be compared, obviously. But Jason is 100% my favorite bassist theyve ever had.
When Jason is on stage, Metallica are taking no prisoners. They’ve lost that intensity since he left IMO.
You could say they were some Creepy Death Metal vocals!

I'm certain I've heard For Whom The Bell Tolls over a 1000 times. Ride The Lightning is my favorite Metallica album and I've had it on loop in my car for months at a time, so I don't feel like I'm exaggerating.
Everytime I hear it in my head tho, it's this Day on The Green version in my mind's ear. The improv intro, James' "HEY-HEY-HEY" chant, further Cliff improv, Kirk's solo at the end, the echo on "Hears the silence so loud!". It's the ultimate version of this song for me.

Metallica never sold out to anything. People just like to hate on people.. Metallica has always done things their way.
Jason was such a great bass player and back up vocalist during that Metallica prime.
The one thing I love about Metallica is they're not afraid to take chances. if it works great if it doesn't well at least we tried.
it is now year 2022 and Metallica still is one if not the greatest live metal bands to ever hit the stage. Metallica's performances are always 500% bad-ass.

Load and ReLoad were two of my favorite albums. I will always love the early years but I really thought that they took a chance on those albums.
The video was on point! 👌🏻 nailed with the last one whiplash! Was so epic when the crowd screamed ”we’re Metallica! ” James reaction tho!
James felt 'shocked' and happy also when the crowd shout "cause you're Metallica !" , and he 'almost late' to sing again , then he looked behind wanted to share his happiness to Lars and 'asked' his reaction .
13:46 - last show with Jason, never noticed him waving at the camera when James sings "goodbye". Probably not a coincidence...
Man Cliff was absolutely a monster. Just awesome.
In the end, nothing was never better than the 'early Metallica' until say 91 when they were truly 'hungry'.

I saw them at Ozz Fest in Dallas in the mid 2000’s and they were unbelievable! I couldn’t believe how tight they were.
9:23 need to add. Jason cut his hair because he damaged it with smoke and fire on concerts.
listening to other (incredible) vocalists singing Metallica songs in the 2010s, i really didn’t realize how unique and absolutely iconic Hetfield’s vocals are. there’s NOBODY who sings like him as good as he does, no matter their vocal skills

You can say that it isn't, but 2019 it's the best year of performances after the Black Album.
'89 Metallica was peak Metallica to me. Yes, the '91 concert in Moscow and having Enter Sandman released is a good argument for '91 being peak Metallica, but that Seattle concert in '89 is the Metallica I want to always remember. My favorite bassist for the band, Jason, crushing it with vocals and that absolutely insane intro to Master of Puppets. The solos were done perfectly the whole concert. Vocals were as good as they have ever been and Lars on drums sounded amazing.

Nicely done!! Really enjoyed it!! Midway through the Puppets tour, James found his voice. Super cool to see that progression with them. Just need to say, Jason Newsted, doing Creeping Death, that’s his song for life. No one puts as much soul into it, as he does. Look into his eyes. Metallica is by far, the hardest working band… maybe of all time. Look how they change their sets, stages, first band to play five continents in less than a year. And still whoopin’ ass!! Thank you for this compilation!!! I was an obsessed Metallica fan in the late 90s/early 2000s, and it's actually SO WEIRD to me that it's only the first third of this video - to me, that's the "end"! I was so completely in love with everything they did, I devoured any material I could find, and this was long before the internet, Google and UA-cam. Coming by any material was very hard, and it was very special when you could hear a live performance that wasn't on an official record. Of course, I listened to Live Shit Mexico City over and over and over (and still do) - I had managed to get the recording in some wild way through the early forums at the time (I am Norwegian, and none of the material was easily accessible to us), but I barely ever heard Seattle because it didn't easily make it to Norway. I also never heard Moscow 91 until now, and now I have the pleasure to experience it thanks to this video. Around the Some Kind of Monster era, I fell off because I was at the age of change, and my life took a left turn, but yesterday, I saw them live at Hellfest in France, and my love has been rekindled. I'm trawling UA-cam for anything I can find, old and new, and it's just a delight.
Truly, the 1987-1992 live era was enviable - I would do many things just to be privileged enough to experience it. Maybe one day, when time travel is a thing, eh. ;)
Thanks so much for piecing this together. I remember being in 9th grade in 86 and reading a metal magazine and saw where Cliff was killed. Today he's worshipped by millions. Bk then it was a *small* obit on like page 10. I remember crying and feeling so alone...I think I was the only kid that even knew who he was. But watching the band over the years was priceless (w some forgetful spots)

A few tears and loads of smiles and 40 minutes later I was fully happy to spend the time staring at my phone. I love Metallica and have since I Discovered them in 1988. Jokingly call james my husband since I was 15, now at 48 I still do.

For me, 2001-2009 metallica was probably the most sloppy era for them, thankfully they recovered from 2010 onwards, not the same as the 80s or early 90s, but still good.
Rob's a terrific bassist, but man I miss Jason.
Metallicas live performances from the past and now in 2024 will always be the best thing of the best of Heavy Metal History.

1997 Fake accident. Recreated in the "Through the Never" film. I was a MetClub member and had already known about the fake accident while attending one of the shows on this tour. Everyone around us was freaking out. I just laughed and told them, "Chill. Everyone is okay. It's completely part of the show." :)

I remember watching the livestream of both 40th anniversary shows. I was in the middle of a month-long vacation from work (saved up all my PTO that year), so it was no problem to stay up late. I got goosebumps when I heard the tape that opened Fixxxer.
