I’m never in a rested state in the cardiologist office! My blood pressure is always lower when at home compared to the doctor’s office.

Have had a nightmare with a local dental office. Went in and they checked my BP, it read 243/130 first reading. After 2 more readings it dropped 50 pts but then they made me go to my Dr. to get a release form. My BP was also high there, but not near as much. Returned the form which concluded "patient is asymptomatic, medically stable, OK to proceed" and the dental office still won't work on me after I waited 2 years for an appointment, they wanted me on meds. Then I researched all this... what they did was checked it while I was half-laying on the dental chair, feet off the ground, arm hanging down and the cuff actually hurt. So a little later went to my regular Dr. (a new one) and insisted they do it right ... well, guess what, it was pretty normal. SO glad I didn't go ahead and get on lifetime meds which may have killed me. I have also heard that sometimes they should try the other arm.

After more than 10 years taking med for high bp, I was told by doctor I have a white coat hypertension. My bp at home is below 120/80 but goes to 150/90 every time I visit a doctor.

Years ago, I took a continuing education course in an exercise science lab at a local university. One of the grad students got an unusually high BP from me. I was in my mid-30s and fit. The professor scolded the student for overinflating the cuff. The professor said something like, “Look at him. Do you honestly think his blood pressure is that high?” The professor told the student to palpate my radial pulse and inflate the cuff until the pulse disappeared to determine how much she should inflate the cuff. She repeated the BP after allowing me to rest for a while and it was normal.

I can relate to white coat syndrome, my BP is always elevated when my doc checks it. At home it's just fine, and I'm using an Omron M3 since it's well tested and approved for home testing :)

I go to a very well known teaching hospital/medical school. There, the dean of the medical school offered a free dinner at any restaurant to anyone in the medical school that could list correctly the 11 steps of measuring BP. There were about 700 students and only one got it right. If these ppl can't get it right, can the nurse in the doctor's office get it right- or even the doctor? Do not use the auto BP cuffs- these are known to overestimate BP by about 10% (Maybe they got better since I researched this). I got this info from very good medical researchers. I do my own and its always much lower than that in the office. Take a series of measurements, throw out the first bc its always high. In fact, the British Hypertension Society recommends taking BP readings until they do not change- this is your true BP.

In many of the doctors offices I’ve been in, I would’ve had a more accurate reading if the janitor had taken my blood pressure! it’s rare when they do it correctly (Even the doctors.) 🙁

Doctors need to take a medical history and listen to the person. How can a doctor know how to help a person when they know nothing about the person. If there is an effect there has to be a cause not just a blood measurement. I don’t get white coat symptom, I get upset because of the lack of attention and not listening to me and sometimes their rude attitude .

I’m only 71 and have high blood pressure yesterday it was 145/91, last nightcap/94
This morning 148/94. I just use a home job
My diet consists of whole Beetroots, Chia seeds, Flaxseeds, Rosehip Hibiscus tea
I use to ride my MTBike every where. My trail dog is really good, but she has been lame in her front legs
Now I go for a stiff walk. Last new year I went on a tramp/baclpacking
I do eat well, I have salt in my diet it wouldn’t happen other wise big teaspoon
My theory is we need salt. What is needed, the electrolytes and salt is in there
I don’t eat processed food, except dried food
I’m struggling to get my blood pressure down
    Cheers have a great day

The assistant in my Dr office has me sit and everything else is correct BUT she has my arm hanging straight down along my side. With that and clear white coat syndrome it's always sky high. I mentioned it to the Dr but she was annoyed when I discussed it with her. I take it at home and bring the readings in each visit.

Thanks insurance companies and their share holders. The resulting "McMedicine" is responsible for so much bad health care, and most of the 9 things here can be traced back to cost-saving measures that most medical facilities have instituted as a result. Skill costs extra. Time costs extra. Educated, customized, genuine "listen to the patient" care - costs extra. So those things aren't available. My friend signed up for concierge/subscription medical care, because she can afford it. The difference in the care she gets from her dr. is just a whole world of difference.

The automatic machine causes excruciating pain. So I've never trusted it. My GPs don't use the old style equipment any more. When i was younger my BP was nicely low. It changed when they introduced them.

Last time I had bp taken: nurse weighed me, reminded me I had gained 6 lbs., pelted me with questions, had me sit on exam table with feet dangling off floor, arm was hanging by side, bp cuff was placed over long sleeve & VERY painful using a machine & suffering with bronchitis and having breathing difficulties and feverish. Is anyone surprised my bp was 181/80??? Dr was more concerned with high bp than the fact I was gasping for air. Actually rx'd bp meds, told me bronchitis was viral, take otc meds, rest, drink water and rushed me out door in 20 min. I am disgusted, frustrated, and now on the way to hosp ER.

The office I go to always uses the automatic cuffs and they are so tight they bruise my upper arm. It is extremely painful. I get high readings with the automated system but when the DR uses manual it’s a much lower reading. I sometimes get asked which arm which I know is wrong.

Small arms, too large of a cuff. Automated machine. When it’s high, they take the cuff off and check my B/P on the other arm right afterwards.
This is done with one doing the procedure and another asking questions.
Results? Much higher B/P than normal….white coat syndrome.
