The part that unscrewed holds the protective glass, not the lens. The lens is the glass that was still inside there.

I am so bad at maintenance, just look at my body!
In seriousness though, yeah, I ran my 3D printer for almost a year straight without maintenance, and still probably would if it didn't get flooded. I know when I get my Fiber I am going to need to maintain it a lot better.
