  • Hello Friends!
    In this video, I talk about a side effect of the commonly prescribed SSRI medications, such as Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro, & Prozac.
    Increased clenching and/or bruxing/grinding activity is a side effect associated with these medications. This increased clenching/bruxing activity can harm the muscles and joints of the jaw leading to headaches, jaw pain, ear pain, neck pain, clicking/popping noises in the joints, and even jaw locking!
    Please watch this video for more information.

    Hi Priya, my understanding is that bruxism is caused by either breathing related sleep disorders or anxiety. It seems SSRIs cause sleepiness and have been linked to respiratory depression. I wonder if this is what triggers the bruxing
    activity. Also as for women having a higher incidence, I wonder if previous pregnancy / menopause etc. have a correlation as these are stressors unique to females.

    • @theTMJdoc
      @theTMJdoc  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, less than ideal breathing and bruxing are definitely intertwined/related. As for women having a higher incidence, it's due to hormones - please watch my video "Hormones and TMJD" and lmk if you have any questions.

    Is there a reason why tmj increases anxiety for some people? To me, it seems like our bodies have this primal or visceral reaction to a jaw injury. It thinks you won't be able to eat, and goes into panic mode. What do you think of using benzodiazepines like clonazepam for TMJ? That's been the only thing that's worked for me. The VA would rather I take 7 other medications off label over this one, and I have to say, I don't understand why they believe this is safer or healthier. They also want me to stay on the max dose of Lexapro because "ssri meds shouldn't do that." Straight from my psyche docs mouth. Good ol VA medicine, a solid 20 years behind the rest of the medical world...

      Hi! Did anxiety meds take away your TMD? I have tried everything and nothing works. Anxiety meds might be my only option . Was your tmd caused by anxiety?

    • @kenaultman7499
      @kenaultman7499 8 місяців тому

      @@alisonsimon5528 it took away 80-90% of it. I use clonazepam 0.5mg at night. The half life is really long. The anti anxiety effect lasts about 8-12 hours. But, the anticonvulsant property lasts much longer. If you go this route, please, please, please be aware of the addiction profile for these medications, and have a real think about if that's the route you want to go. I felt like I didn't have any other choice because I'd gotten to the point where it was so bad, I was sitting in a dark bedroom all day, everyday, all day. Any sound hurt and gave me vertigo. Any light felt like it pierced through my eyes and into my skull. Talking more than a few words was impossible, and it legitimately ruined my life for a good year. Luckily, I have a PCP who trusts me and wrote the prescription for clonazepam.
      I am kind of a strange case. No one is really sure why I developed TMD. Some doctors don't even think I have it, and is purely neurological in nature. The main symptom I have is a constant tremor in my jaw. Some doctors call it a tremor, some a spasm, and others say I have oramandibular dystonia. I saw Dr Priya here, she's amazing BTW. But, ended up with Dr Kushner in Silverdale as the VA paid for it all. But, she does offer flexible payment plans, and I'd say she probably one of the most knowledgeable people in the US on TMD.
      Anyways, I have a constant tremor/dystonia in my jaw. I was/am a boxer/kickboxer with quite a few fights. Did that cause it? Don't know. It is like I'm freezing cold and my teeth are chattering away. But, I'm not cold. It doesn't stop, ever. I am guessing, but I think having that constant tremor over works all the muscles in my face, base of my skull, and head in general. This causes extreme pain. It's like flexing a muscle for weeks or months on end. I've been in the ER from the pain with a heart rate of 190+. They thought I was having a stroke. Nope. I was in that much pain. They'd IV Ativan, and I'd almost instantly feel better.
      I did a lot of research on my own and saw that clonazepam and Valium are used for TMD. I'd see Dr Priya if I was you.
