For golfers that overswing on the backswing, taking your right thumb off of the club will create a governor as to how far back your backswing wll go as he'll be using only his left arm to control the length of his backswing.. Example: If you swing back with just your left arm and you keep it straight or at least relatively straight it will make your backswing stop in the perfect position. I think Fleetwood is so flexible that by taking his right thumb off during the backswing (and by so doing) that compensation prevents him from overswinging a la John Daly as he is using his left arm only to measure the length of his backswing.. My two cents.

At the 2023 Players Championship in round 2, Brad Faxon said Fleetwood just saw Butch Harmon a couple weeks ago, and Harmon told him “got to make your hips turn better and to release his head better and get off your right side.” So maybe Harmon was telling him to keep his left cheek to on or over the tush line and and for right cheek do the same.

I would like to see you analyze Fred Couples and how vertice his left arm is at the top of his two plane back swing.

I saw Brent Snedeker swing with his right thumb off the grip too. There is a video of him slam dunking a shot from 150 and before he even draws the club back, his right thumb is standing up away from the shaft. Must keep them from being too handsy.

I've been teaching for years and I would say what would really help him is if he didn't turn his hips so much right at the start of his back swing. He has what I call dead hips from half way up his back swing. They don't turn anymore. He needs to concentrate on turning around a fixed right knee and maintaining the angle between his left arm and body, in other words a one piece takeaway. It's all too compressed at the top of the swing. He has won 5 tournaments and that is amazing, he is very talented! He could be a Major winner though. He does have a lovely swing but technically it could be improved. He is compensating a bit for those first movements in his back swing. You should never start turning your hips at the same speed as your shoulders because the hips, at some point, are going to stop at around 45 degrees whilst your shoulders carry on to 90 degrees, thus dead hips. He is a great player though and all the very best to him!
