Eric says in his autobiography that after his son's tragic demise, he couldn't sleep for weeks. Then he listened to this particular performance and he went into a deep sleep. Truly magical!
8:11 hearing that part for the first time made me pick up a guitar. I wonder if Mr C knows just how many people he has inspired , or just how many babies are a result of this song.
Those whole step bends where he gets those tasty pinch harmonics to choke just so are frickin' perfect. That solo truly is Mr. Slowhand at his finest. That's how you play a melodic solo.
I ve heard a lot of good Music , and i ve heard a lot of so called Love Songs , and i am not a very Clapton Fan , but this Version of this Song is full of so much Emotions and Feelings , its hard to describe my Feelings , Tears running down my Face , so Awesome ......!
I had this VHS growing up, this is why I grew up a Clapton fan, and this is, without a doubt, the finest track on the entire video. I never even heard the original studio version until years later, and I remember being so disappointed by it, it sounds so 70s and dated today. This is the proper way this beautiful song needs to be heard, IMO. Early Clapton could really play, sure, but IMO, this is around when his voice reached its full potential.
Quite probably the most beautiful ballad ever played. Katie Kissoon's vocal work at the end is particularly impressive. Not exactly surprising, that she ended up singing the great gig in the sky with Pink Floyd on their last tour :-)
The 24 nights CDs got me through some hard times. This version of Wonderful Tonight is the best of any out there, especially at 3:53: "And the wonder of it all, is that you just don't realize how much I love you". Katie Kisoon's solo at the end is fantastic.
+Kristen Barry I agree with what you said completely , I thought I might be the only one that really got emotional over the How much I love you part, when I hear the studio version I cant sing it without the change in notes.
I love the intro to this song..it's so romantic...you know you're gonna hear some real guitar playing soon enough...I have seen mr c a few times..never ever fails to make me feel excellent...no matter what song he plays...I just love this.

Those high notes she hits, she hits them with so much restraint and control, and this, from an era when stage monitoring isn't what it is today.
The "Wonderful Tonight" track on 24 nights CD is from a different performance. Any chance you know if this version is recorded and released anywhere?
