CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ron (Tom Cruise) is pushed through a crowd of reporters on his way to deliver a national speech.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The second of three films by co-writer/director Oliver Stone to explore the effects of the Vietnam War (Platoon and Heaven and Earth are the others), Born On The Fourth Of July tells the true story of Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise), a patriotic, All-American small town athlete who shocks his family by enlisting with the Marines to fight in the Vietnam War. Once he is overseas, however, Kovic's gung-ho enthusiasm turns to horror and confusion when he accidentally kills one of his own men in a firefight. His downfall is furthered by a bullet wound that leaves him paralyzed from the chest down. He returns home, spends an appalling, nightmarish stint in a veterans' hospital, and follows an increasingly disillusioned and fragmented path that ultimately leaves him drunk and dissolute in Mexico. However, Kovic somehow turns himself around and pulls his life together, becoming an outspoken anti-war activist in the process. The film is long but emotionally powerful; many consider it Stone's best work and Cruise's best performance. Both were nominated for Oscars, as was the film itself, but only Stone, who co-wrote the film with Kovic from the latter's book, won for Best Director.

Tom Cruise is an amazing actor. He captured PTSD and Major Depression Disorder 100% accuratly, he nailed it. This movie is what it looks like.
Should have won the oscar in my opinion.amazing performance.
AGREED!
Up against Day Lewis that year; but yea he did very well in this movie
If you think that, go see My Left Foot
Well, there was some hard competion. 80's and 90's were times when Oscar ment something and creators try to earn it by quality.
Tom cruise really gave justice to this role. We all live life. And we all try to do the best with the hand we are dealt.
This is such a stunning performance from Tom Cruise. One of those movies you can't not cry to.
This is the Tom Cruise I remember and he was amazing in this! This movie was so sad and Ron Kovic is a symbol of courage and I have this movie on DVD!
I had the pleasure of getting to know Ron Kovic during 1988. Cruise captures him perfectly.
I had the pleasure of meeting him after seeing the movie opening night in Century City. Found him in the lobby after the film ended. Went up to him, told him God bless him. He thanked me. I'll never forget that moment.
This scene represents to perfection the way of life. The deciciones , dreams, opportunities we leave behind for our goals. great movie
The start And The end Of journey.
Made me cry...
What made you cry?
Sublime film. Tom Cruise's best work, IMO
Oliver Stone became the sixteenth man to win a second directing Oscar, joining an elite pantheon that includes Milos Forman, Billy Wilder, David Lean, Elia Kazan, and John Ford. Since his win, Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee, and Alejandro González Iñárritu have been added to the list
To me this is the best part of the movie.
The ending is so emotional.
It's so emotional. The ending of this movie always gets me.
@@g-uy9me Me too. Even watching it here.
“I’m just gonna tell the truth”- The truth shall set you free. 😇💝🙏😢
Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything, but I still very much consider this a bittersweet ending rather than a happy one. Sure, Kovic manages to turn his life around and become a successful author, but he still has practically lost everything; his ability to walk, the love of his family, the respect of his oldest friends, contact with the one woman he loved in high school, and all-around, his ability to function properly in life- and he never reconciles with any of them. Those two flashbacks he just had are definitely dead giveaways as to how he blissfully reminisced over happier and more innocent times before heading to Vietnam, and in a way, it provides a sense of melancholy for him, knowing that he can never fully pick up the pieces of his broken life and he'll remain haunted by it for years to come.
To me it showed how resilient Kovic is/was. He could have kept the downward spiral until death, but fought back and became a powerful voice. So, I see the ending as inspirational
I don't think you're a Debbie Downer. You're a truth teller. Just like me. Beautifully written post. Thank you.
@jonathanbirch2022 I'm gonna remember your statement. Well written. Thank you
Happy Belated Birthday to the one and only, Mr. Tom Cruise!A great actor, this is, in my opinion, his greatest performance! He's done many other great performances, but this one might just be his greatest! Again, Happy Birthday!
I don't agree with his politics, but I have the utmost respect for Ron Kovic. He was there, he saw the horrors, and he tried to do something about it according to his views. That's courage right there.
Max Frankow what don't you agree with just for conversation perpose. I'm a 36 year old canadian who loves American history . I have read and watched quite a bit on the subject. I have worked with a lot of Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees that cam in the early 70s . They do love our country but all have the same negative view on American being a country that builds it's economy on war and shouldn't always be where it sticks it's nose. Some are thankful of the removal of diem. But also feel a lot of men and women died for absolutely silly pointless reasons. They feel they were always free in their mind and no matter what their government did it couldn't change their beliefs. I kind see that now with the terrorist. Your not going to fight these ppl. These ore too many of them. And the more we kill the more radical they become. It's not even a country this time. It's a belief we are fighting. Seems futile. But I'd live to hear what you mean.
Amen.
Idk how the hell you can not agree with his politics.
What about his politics you don't like?
If he were around today you would label him “woke” and cast him aside.
great movie. brillant performance by tom cruise.
Tragic. Beautiful. Oliver Stone often gets me angry with his excesses, but he one of the only filmmakers of his generation that throws in the mid-90s on a regular basis. With movement.
Remember when Tom Cruise used to do movies where he showed us what a great actor he is?
He still does.
So what, he has to prove he can act his entire career 😂
Love the flashbacks to his life.
Am I the only one who finds John C McGinleys role as Official:1 very touching. You cant see him in a Vietnam era movie, especially an Oliver Stone one without thinking of Sgt O;Neill.
Other Platoon cast members got resurrected for cameos and even major parts in 4th July - Berenger, Dafoe, Mark Moses plays a VA doctor, Corky Ford another Vet. But only McGinley and David Neidorf, wounded in the first ambush in Platoon and a recovering VA patient in 4th July, could be playing the same character in both movies.
I like to think he is playing O;Neill in 4th July. That hapless, awful sycophant from Vietnam who has grown into an unshowy, dedicated champion of veterans. It reminds us of the hundreds of thousands of vets who didn't get to be national heroes or battlefield heroes and probably spent their tours just wanting out.
Maybe it was Vietnam that bought out the worst in O:Neill, and the true measure of the man was his stronger role post-war - defending men he couldn't save in the jungles because he was wound too tight trying to save himself.
He gets a ten second cameo with a few lines in this movie but enough for a small play on redemption all of his own.
No country is perfect. Every country has its flaws. And U.S.A. is not the exception
What an inspiration.
Tom Cruise nailed this role perfectly, he should of won the oscar for this.
Daniel Day Lewis simply better
@@DMallthewayDDL is the better actor but TC deserved the Oscar over him in 1989.
@@darthtrip7188 Not even close, DDL won it by a mile.
@@DMalltheway I completely disagree. My Left Foot sucks.
@@darthtrip7188 Get over yourself and enjoy your Twilight movies.
This was by far the best Tom Cruise movie. I love this movie.
Cruise deserved Oscar for this
So did Daniel Day-Lewis
Tom Cruise should have won best Oscar this year. You can go though all 9 of these Movie Clips and each clip he's delivering an Oscar worthy performance.
Not😊
@@lexkanyima2195Yes, Tom Cruise should have won the Oscar even over Daniel Day Lewis.
@@darthtrip7188 you think he eclips Day Lewis all over the scene ?
@@lexkanyima2195 No, they both gave great performances that year and they both deserved the Oscar but I think Tom Cruise deserved it a little more. I think Daniel Day Lewis is the overall better actor by a good margin but I think Tom Cruise deserved the Oscar a little more that year.
@@darthtrip7188 why ? Is it more believable ?
been looking everywhere for his speech at the DNC
Saw it opening night in Century City, Wednesday, 1989. Cried watching this scene. Watched it here, I'm tearing up typing this. Great movie. Best Tom Cruise performance ever.
Powerful scene
SEMPER FI!
It's a shame how people from iraq Vietnam Japan Liberia can't make their own movies to prove how great they ARE.
They do. Most audiences are just comfortable with the usual stuff. Things are changing though. Look at Korean cinema. They've been producing some belters for the last 20 years now.
great!
TOM = AMAZING
Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸 2024!
Incredibly movie!!
Creo que se merecen un respeto...han dado su vida por su país
Like how that woman throws the book in his lap like its a table.
I noticed Dr. Cox in this scene!
Amazing movie and a truly awesome Tom Cruise!
Hero
This role was first offered to AL pacino
say the truth!
Nice long hair Tom 😎
tom cruise was great but daniel day lewis definitely deserved the oscar he won in 1989
I disagree. Tom Cruise deserved the Oscar more.

"You're a Grand Old Flag"
The version in this movie is the best I have heard, but I have been unable to find a copy of it anywhere. Let me know if you find this version.
