I think this is the most powerful anti-war statement ever committed to film. Tom Cruise is on fire in this role. All the delegates are spitting and screaming at the men they voted to sent to Vietnam, who came to realise that the war was a lie. Everything just works. The outrage felt by the vets, the mindless fury of the delegates, it's such a well crafted and touching scene. I think Tom Cruise never bettered his performance here.

I have PTSD, but not by war. I wish there were PTSD support groups that weren't exclusionary for war. I love our veterans, the ones who had to go through hell and back to survive, but I've encountered support groups for PTSD that are solely combat related, and I wish I felt welcomed. I fought a "war" in my formative years...15 or 16 years of constant abuse. I will not devalue what vets have sacrificed. But give us non-vet PTSD sufferers a chance please.

Just FYI the actual event at the RNC was not as bad as they portrayed it.
This scene was actually based on 2 incidents in Kovic's life. His arrest and beatdown by the undercover Vet (A ginger no less) occurred in Orange County California.
Where as the RNC convention Robert Dorman (Future Republican Congressmen) who urged the security to let them in described it as this...
"It was not as big a disturbance as the movie showed, but it was a disturbance," says Mr. Dornan. "They were screaming. The guards came down and politely pulled their chairs backward. [They] put them out peaceably." A United Press International report of the incident describes the scene this way: "After about five minutes, security agents wheeled them in protesting out a side door. I went out and watched him and the other two congratulating one another, bragging about what they'd accomplished."

It's sickening it truly is, vietnam was a wrong war on so many levels, the u.s. had no business overthere politically speaking but these young brave americans who voluntarily signed up were completely mislead by the government. My ❤ goes out to the Vietnamese people, also my ❤ goes out to the young americans who believed in this country's lies and paid the price. No child of god should ever be put "mislead or drafted" into harms way unless there is absolutely no other choice and it is to defend this nation not to be used to invade at will. "The first man" significantly misunderstands evolutionary time scales.

    Stop. The war
    Any war Stop
    Please!
    Tom Cruise is right!
    He played the right role.
    Really diplomacy is better!
War must be the last resort
    For example WW2 of course
We had to stop criminals from taking over the world.
World.was under threat so America and its allies had to step up and fight.
    But Vietnam War
I just don't understand that one.
    Thanks for this movie
It opened our eyes and see the devastation of war.

Woah buddy, relax. It was a joke, you guys seriously need a sense of humour. I never targeted veterans, I meant the mindless fighting between the left and right.

I never understood the hatred for Nixon considering he's the one who ultimately withdrew troops from Vietnam. I know he ordered those bombings in Laos, but shouldn't LBJ and Kennedy get most of the blame for that catastrophe of a war? It seems like Nixon is associated most with Vietnam, but the guys who actually started it and committed the most troops slide under the radar. IDK, correct me if I'm wrong

Well troops were in Vietnam during the 50s under Eisenhower. November 1st 1955 Eisenhower authorizes a military assistance advisory group to train south Vietnamese soldiers.

The whole idea of trying to stop a country for being a certain type of government was stupid in the first place.
