And that's why Tom Cruise is arguably one of the best actors of his or any other generation. Went camping with a few guys when we were in our early 20s, heavy drinking at night and one of us decided to try and swim across the lake. We all had a good laugh and told him he was crazy, guy jumped off the dock and went for it. Went under about halfway, I had to call his mom and tell her what happened. She didn't know me very well prior but I met her at his funeral.
I sat down with his father, mother and his sister and told them what happened. I cried when I told them I was to drunk to stop him or try and save him. All of us that night were prairie boys no one knew how to swim well. Except me, I moved in my teens from the coast. I was a white badge, red cross swimmer. Guy had seen me make that same swim multiple times that afternoon.
I'm 100% certain someone involved in the making of this scene has been forgiven by a mother. That actress was flawless.

While I understand the wife being upset to learn her husband wasn't killed by an enemy combatant, I don't get why she said she couldn't forgive Kovic. It's not like he intended to kill her husband, it's war and it happens -- some estimates are that friendly fire deaths were as high as 20 percent of all U.S. deaths in Vietnam. This is one thing I don't like about how we treat veterans in general -- we send these young men who have just become adults, into some of the most horrific places and events you can imagine and then judge them for not acting 100 percent perfectly. Or at least she did. I hate war and have worked with many war victims, and yes soldiers can do horrific coldblooded things that are truly wrong. But this is not one of them.

It's funny how a couple years prior to this he was in a flight school learning from the best of the best, and even enjoying himself playing volleyball with his classmates after class at the beach, and one time he had a fight with his teacher, but eventually made up and they shagged, but one day while training he lost control of his plane, and the plane went into a spinning stall, which forced him and his best friend to eject, but his best friend got into a freak accident when his head hit the canopy as he ejected the air craft, and as his best friend descended into the water, he wasn't moving and was lifeless. This is probably why he accidentally killed this poor family's son in combat. Fifty years had passed, and he got his life back together, and became a teacher in the very same flight school he went to.

As a veteran, I wouldn't expect to receive any kind of forgiveness if I were to have killed a fellow soldier in combat and then confessed it to the family. I do think that it was a little bit harsh, though, now as a parent, to judge someone who is confessing their guilt to you because they were in the worst situation of their life and didn't act 100% according to the rules. Things like this are why tactics, techniques, and procedures change, but we still get our Pat Tillman incidents that area sad reminder that some things in war don't go to plan.

My dad had to escort my uncles body from Japan back to Iowa. Dad was in the Air Force, saw some things when he was stationed in SE Asia during Vietnam. He would have night terrors, and call out my uncles name. Fireworks and hearing gunshots during deer season set him off. I know he was in a rocket attack, and was shot at a few times, and another time he ad to assist in a helicopter crash where the crew was trapped inside screamin and burned to death.

I’m conflicted about this, part of me wonders if it was selfish to tell them. He took away the one comfort or thing they could take pride in (he died fighting, killed by the enemy) all they had for a final memory of their son…meanwhile He gets the cathartic relief of an unburdened heart. Maybe keeping that burden a secret for the rest of his life would have been better for the family. I guess I wonder who he really helped by doing this. I always thought they were angry at him for telling them the truth , not for killing their son.

Tom Cruise did some very good acting in this movie. His common acting roles as a good looking 20 year old hot shot were at times repetitious. It's good to see some depth and gritty realism brought to life by T.C. on a very tragic story. The veteran Ron Kovick was a hero who did what he thought was right. Military service and the circumstances brought on by war are not always easy.
