This game was pretty much just made for die hard Star Wars fans. The concept for this game is something that has been requested by Star Wars fans for a long time. The campaign is also considered canon in the Star Wars universe, I assume they did this to boost sales.
@Trojansfan I mean space Dogfight games isn't a new idea either. Combining ideas from others isn't a bad thing. You're not saying shooting in COD is nice, too bad they stole it from wolfenstein
I feel like the target audience is for people who grew up playing X Wing vs. Tie Fighter. I was one such person as a 90s child, but nostalgia aside, I wonder if this kind of gameplay has a place in the modern age of gaming. Either way, the Star Wars fan in me is glad they made it, but the adult with a budget and limited time in me, just can't justify it. I wish it success nonetheless.
Pretty sure this was made to capture the XvT community who played multiplayer on Microsoft Gaming Zone in the 90's. Being one of those people, I'm enjoying the game. As Ben said, the campaign is definitely pretty basic and serves as a long tutorial mostly. Also, definitely made with VR in mind.
This seems more like it is based on the old xwing series rather than rogue squadron. Rogue squadron was a primarily 3rd person arcade game whereas the xwing games were 1st person and more like a combat flight sim game. Also, there is an awful lot of flying around stations, debris fields, asteroid fields etc. In fact most of the game is whizzing in and out of space station structures rather than in the nothingness of space. Think they may have played the wrong game 🤣
No HUD button to togglle away the cockpit? So this isn't as well thought out as say, XW v TF...otherwise Peter's description (20:44) is at best that.. How...ususal for a Star Wars game...not.
Wow! Am I playing a different game? It's awesome! I'm a huge fan of the x-wing games though, so maybe it's the nostalgia pop. I think it's one of those games where either you love it or it's just not for you, which I suppose is fair enough. Also been playing on PC with a joystick (just a cheap one, not a crazy flight sim setup), so maybe it's much better played that way. Tried a controller initially and it was really hard. There's also a bit of general EA hate giving people a bad taste. EA suck, but this game is great and I don't want to have waited 20 years for another star wars flying game just to have general gamer rage at EA ruin it for me. The game is awesome and has a solid audience out there for it, so I hope they find it and the negative reviews don't put people off.
I think you summed it up nicely, comparing it to the old X-wing and Tie fighter games. Squadrons plays like a game from that era with modern graphics. Its far too simple in design for a game of today and therefore very disappointing. Gamers these days want something more along the lines of a star wars Elite dangerous or Star citizen.
@@martinr6201 Yeah I suppose that's fair enough. To me though, if you want a star wars flying game...whats better? Or even close? I guess its the same as with racing games. Do you want Gran Turismo or Project Cars, or do you want Need For Speed or Burnout? Some people like both, some people don't.
@@colonicus i agree there is nothing better, but we shouldnt settle for mediocre. AAA games should push bounderies with every release, we as gamers should not setlle for anything less.
@@martinr6201 I dunno...I don't really disagree, but I'm getting too old to focus on the negatives of every release. It's not perfect, but nothing is. It's a solid 8/10 game that's trying something different. Could maybe have been better with a few million and a few months thrown at it, but I think they've focused on the right areas and made a decent little game. Plus if we only played perfect games we wouldn't play anything. Seems like the criticism is that it's a claustrophobic dogfight simulator. That's the whole point though, so I don't really get what the problem is other than some people not wanting or not expecting it to be that. If it's not for you that's fine, and I agree it's not perfect. I just don't think that makes it a bad game. I'm having great fun with it, hopefully there are enough people who agree.
The thing is that the relative lack of price increases for AAA games is one of the things that led to the 'live service' and 'microtransaction' problems in the industry, and also a little bit of the crunch problem as well. It's not the -sole- cause of these things, but it's an important factor, and if we're wanting the industry to change, then developers will need to get revenue from somewhere besides live service microtransaction models. For that, we have one of two choices: 1. Accept higher prices for the size of game we expect of AAA titles OR 2. We accept smaller games for the same old price People are going to differ on which is the better choice, but it's clear that publishers will want to try the first one.
I'd say if you ever played the old xwing games (not Rogue Squadron that they incorrectly likened it to) and you enjoyed them then it is well worth it. Don't think this is a game for everyone though
...you see angry Joe's review of it...??? He said that it's a decent game non-VR but the VR experience he gave 10/10...I was shocked when you said you haven't played it on VR even though you have VR...what's up with that...???
I really don't think we are going to get a good SW flying game anymore. Companies need to make money and those that want a SW flying game are a smaller group. That and yes, VR being the push for this really makes it "meh". To be fair I haven't played the Battlefront games either (the new ones), only because I just don't have time for online stuff anymore.
Oh yeah, here we go. SPACE TIME!

The adjusting of the power options seams to be an amazing idea

@Trojansfan They did it back in the 90s with the original X-Wing game
Star Wars: Squadrons, more like Star Wars: Squandered potential am I right?

If you like space dogfighting/combat at all and want a good game for that, check out Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. :)

Yes
This game just looks like X-Wing vs Tie Fighter
I always wandered what exactly they changed from Battlefront to this to makw it an own game
Doesn't the story take place directly after Alderaan's destruction? You know, Empire vs Rebels and all that?
Only the very first 2 missions, them it skips to after Endor
@@jonathanward3633 thanks! Only watched the first hour or so of gameplay!
Bring me Freespace 2

With VR they had the chance to do a full Star Wars experience......then they shit the bed....

I named one of my characters Charlie Dynamo which is a name I'm very proud of for some reason
This with VR is most fun I have had in a long time.
I also think you didn’t pay attention to the control of the targeting instructions.

I'm tempted to buy it just because it's come out at the correct price for a game. There's no way I'm buying £60 games. That's just revolting

I was on the fence about this one. Sounds like a pass for me. I wanted a new rogue squadron game.
if TP is a bit underwhelmed by a star wars game then its a bad star wars game
It's EA what would you honestly expect

I'll stick with Elite Dangerous.
Only a few minutes in and sorry but it looks like a mobile game to me...
Take away STARWARS and it’s a mediocre game. I agree 100% with this quip
The latest Ace Combat was fun as hell, I was expecting that. Bummer it’s incredibly mediocre
I found this game to be amazing fun, especially with PSVR.
