    Vocal booths. What are they? Why do we need them? Today we're going to go over all of that. We'll also go over a vocal booth you can make at home for under a quarter of the price of a professional recording booth.

They work great, but my mic is so good, it pics up on all the chatter all the way in my living room- and that’s with Noise Gate! So, thanks to your video, I am boing to make a sort of crescent booth with roof, so I can be near my desk station and record, cutting out all the extra chatter that I was picking up with my cleaning blankets and crescent booth! You rock!

    Most problems I am hearing in home studio's is the fact that I can hear rumble a lot of times. Sure, you can cut the low end off, but in a lot of cases it cuts off the body of the voice as well. Also it's not the way you want to encounter the problem, you want to eliminate the low frequency vibrations that came from your neighbors walking or traffic, that traveled thru all the concrete and wood, into the mic stand and the actual walls off your vocal booth. Maybe with budget studio mics it's not that big of a problem but when working with more expensive models it could be. They can be real sensitive and pick up the tiniest vibrations, add some compression to the channel and you can hear your neighbors television, walking around and stuff.
    So my suggestion is to start from the bottom. Build a good soundproof floor, it's about the hardest thing to soundproof but most times it's worth the effort. You don't have to do the whole floor, only the part where the booth is standing. There are numerous ways to build a soundproof floor. But I think the prefab tiles are good to start with and make the easiest way to do the job.

    Civil engineer here - I stumbled upon this video as i am looking for ways to make myself a diy booth too and I have one problem with the booth you constructed - make some diagonal pipes as well - if someone clumsy enough bumps into the booth it could easily "fold" itself (as it is not statically stable) and likely get the joints damaged and you will have to redo it. Other than that thanks for some new stuff to keep in mind. Great video ;)

    the blankets I'm looking at don't have those holes to hang them up because I'm using moving blankets instead of ones made specifically for this since I'm not even close to being able to afford the specialized ones. And while this brand I'm looking at has better reviews for this specific purpose than the other moving blankets I looked at due to the fact they're thicker, I feel like I'm going to run into problems hanging them. Is there any way to do this setup with blankets with no holes? or could you refer me to another brand of good quality moving blankets that will still be thick enough for this purpose that do come with holes? Sorry if you said something about this in the video I was watching with my sound down just to get an idea of how to actually put this together.

    Very good and helpful plans. Thank you.
    Cost me $66.30 for the PVC frame (no blankets) --> all from Home Depot including the PVC cutters (which were awesome and so easy to use) and the shower rings. Also, I needed 8 of the 10-foot pipes to build the default size in the calculator.. might want to grab 9 in case you make a mistake.

    FYI, even at $5-10k it's still Cheaper to just buy one if you can't diy and plan to hire a carpenter. A basic build with a door, a window, 4 walls, a ceiling and floor covered with sound dampening on inside and outside basic finish like speaker box carpet or paint would likely be 4-6 days 8 hours a day. When you add materials and labor it would be very hard to compete with a company capable of building multiple booths every day. This is one of the most basic simple diy projects I've found.

  • @voidshadow
    @voidshadow 6 років тому +10

    Good idea, but for about $200 you can get some wood, rockwool, and screws to build a booth that will capture a wider frequency range. I tried the blanket method at first but I noticed the blankets only really helped with higher frequencies. Low frequencies (deep voices) were still coming through the blankets a little. My booth walls were built like so;
    Key: r=rockwool (4in), p=plywood, f=acoustic foam (2in), e=empty space (2in), b=burlap fabric
    p_e_r_b_f
    The empty space helps with those low reflections, the walls are a bit thick but a buddy of mine can play a saxaphone in there and very little noise comes out into the room. I put a bit more work/money into my booth but you could build a very good booth for vocals with just some wood and some rockwool, maybe some screen mesh stapled around it to keep it all together. Anyway still a very good tip/idea, kudos.

    I don't have a walkin closet in my apartment. Just a normal closet and it sounded VERY dry. I put the mic between a bunch of tshirts, put a blanket behind it, and then put up a curtain rod behind me to hang more blankets.
    Sounded really dry.
    However, the reason I'm here looking for other solutions is that I share my closet wall with my neighbor's bedroom and I don't really want to be singing to them.

    Dylan, thank you so much for this outstanding video. Only one question for you. After almost a year, if you had to make your vocal booth again, would you choose 1.25 inch or 1.5 inch PVC instead of 1 inch ? More stable, maybe ?

    • @masteringcom
      @masteringcom  5 років тому +1

      Dylan here - I'm unsure. Mostly because I haven't made one with greater thickness. I think this design is stable enough, though. Plus, if you want to use the calculator I've created, you have to stick with 1 inch PVC, since using larger thicknesses will mess with the algorithms I created.

    How about sewing the blankets together and then suspending them from 4 hooks in ceiling. You could strengthen the top one with cardboard or something to stop it folding up on you.
    I dont have the space for a large structure so reckon it would work for me 😊
