So he was able to get back into his apartment, shower and gather supplies??!!! The cops thought he was in the area but no one thought of keeping an eye on his apartment?!🙄
It’s very likely he had these things ready to go before he committed the shooting. And even if he didn’t it doesn’t take that long to quickly shower and gather things together. By the time the cops figured out who he was he had likely already left the apartment.
Thank you! I was looking for this comment. These professionals are ignoring something very basic. Commit a crime>Run and hide. The very action of the average criminal who knows he’s done wrong but doesn’t want to get caught. Ridiculous!

It doesn't even matter if the dad knew about the mental illness. He knew the cops took the guns away and told him to keep them safely away from him. To which, he agreed.
I find this one tough, why didn't the cops keep em and did they say how long he(Dad) was to hold them for? For me its just not so cut and dry. i do feel also he should of had a long talk with his son before giving them back. Maybe he just wanted to be done with the situation and not be responsible for them anymore before crossing state lines. I'm interested in finding out hes reasoning and the outcome.
Glad to see plaintiff’s father suffered consequences in Illinois for returning weapons to his son against court mandate. Not believable that he was unaware of son’s mental health issues 😖

In 2023 Jeffrey Reinking (his father) was sentenced to 18 months for supplying guns to his son that were used in the massacre. I don’t know if he has served this yet
I have never understood the ridiculous notion that an action can only be "heroic" if it was completely "selfless". If you end up saving a bunch of other people while "selfishly" saving yourself, that is no less heroic. Saving lives is saving lives. Dude's a hero, and a humble one.
I'm a retired due to scoliosis forensic psychiatric nurse/councilor. This is a perfect example of how ignoring mental health issues in the entire world has brought us to this point. We homeless and jail our mentally ill instead of face it head on and stop actions like this from happening in the first place...
Minimum dataset management, turns doctors, nurses into psychopathic killers for profit. Ironically my brother is in a care home they tried to chemically restraint him. They thought he was an indigent, until I called SCREAMING, the nurse is lucky I'm 1891 miles away and not a female, I would KICK her teeth in. Funny, they transferred him ASAP, to try and distance themselves from pyscho-the-rapists methods of care of handicapped elderly people.

So happy to see a new video. And another job well done! Kevin I need to say that I love your channel, as you cover cases that are not well known. A lot of channels seem to regurgitate the same cases. Thanks again!
I’ve watched a lot of his videos. I’ve seen people with schizophrenia. He definitely fits that. He’s not making it up, he actually believes/believed he was being stalked by Taylor Swift.
I work in mental health as a psychiatric nurse & I've seen patients with this exact affliction, the Brain is absolutely screwed up on this poor guy, there is no accountability & his delusions are real to him...I'm just broken over the people caught in the crossfire 💔😪
I'm would say I'm surprised that he wasn't found not guilty due toental defect but that would shift blame to the local agencies and we can't have that.
I agree. It was difficult to watch him. He had it all, auditory and visual hallucinations, persecutory and religious delusions. The system failed him his whole life right until the end.
@@elenagordon7378 the problem is that he wasn’t getting regular help for his mental issues and even refused to take medication. He knew he had issues and decided to ignore them. His own father knew these things and did nothing. For him to give and weapons back to him was throwing anything and that any doctor told his son right out the window. That’s what’s even scarier.
the bar for insanity is too high. i understand the reasoning for it to prevent abuse, but the bar is so high that actual people with actual mental illness that dont know what is actually going on around them are treated the same as people that decide they hate someone and want them to die. its a shame.
Being committed, he was deemed unable to be in possession or own a firearm. HIs father should be charged with the same crimes the suspect was. Absolutely incomprehensible.

The standards for "1st degree murder" and "insanity" are insanely low and high (respectively) in the USA. This guy should be (imprisoned) in a pych ward, not the general population of a prison.
Was his trial during the "summer of love?" I could see a white guy shooting multiple black people and being sent to a hospital as a catalyst for more riots during that period.
My cousin is slowly dying. Sometimes he's in so much pain that he can't sleep. He'll go days without sleep until he's psychotic. All of his guns have been locked away. We told him where they were, that they are still his but have been removed for safekeeping. We explained to him why they were removed. When he's not psychotic, he understands why and agrees with us. When he's not himself, he thinks we've stolen them to kill him. But he's not getting them back. He'll never get them back. It's sad because it's a beautiful and expensive collection. But we wouldn't be able to forgive ourselves if he did something to someone else
This guy needed help! He obviously was paranoid and delusional and it doesn’t sound like anyone took him seriously. So then after he kills 4 people many people are alarmed at his previous behaviors?! It’s always after the damage is done!
So glad to see something honest about their actions. You are still a hero, and your honesty makes you even more heroic. There was no gushing of "i lnew i had to do it to save others" and stories one would normally hear when a tragedy is happens. Blatant honesty. A testimony to you as a person.
I actually think that what that man said at the end about not being a hero but being selfish in Saving his own life that's actually the definition of a hero he kept cool Under Fire he waited for the right moment to attack and he did it he saved everyone else unfortunately some died before but there was no one else between the gunman and all those people and of course that crazy fool was going to kill them all you are a hero young man just keep the same attitude throughout life and you'll be happy and I hope you have a fruitful life
So basically this is a case of a parent not understanding how mental health struggles work. And he didn't care enough to find out....I'm willing to bet, the guns going to dad by request was because it was understood they'd be returned at some point.(at least by him) If he'd been more anchored into his family, this could've been averted. But instead he was a state away and on his own.
Wonder if the father has a touch of racism passed on to son? Why was an eatery with only black & coloured customers & workers targeted by Travis, when in his mind it was 'Taylor Swift' was stalking him? Praise be to James
That seems harsh. Knowing about schizophrenia and actually trying to help someone who has it, can be very different things. His father was absolutely wrong to return the guns. My dad was a scientist who did research about schizophrenia.
James, you said you waited for the right moment. Somewhere in that split second decision was knowing that no-one was in the way of getting hurt in the scuffle. The fact that you made sure the gun was pointed upwards speaks volumes about your concern for others. Just a guess but you may have survivors guilt which is why you don't like being called a hero. Dude, you're a Hero 🎖️ 💛

Why didn't the police stake out his apartment? Total incompetence by the police officers.. unexcusable.. they would have never solved this crime if the entire incident wasn't on video for them.. they just had a couple of things to do and they couldn't even do those right

Another case with prior ongoing signs of untreated mental health issues. The system needs to be easier to navigate and de-stigmatized. Tragedy all around. My heart goes out to the victims, their families and loved ones.
Paranoia is an awful terrible experience. It’s so real and personal taking things that are worldwide, like Taylor Swift, and pulling the idea of her into his delusions. The only way I can get out of it is by cutting myself of from it. Like if it was Taylor swift stalking, I’d stay off UA-cam, delete her from all playlists, turn off surveillance around my house, never talk about her, change what I’m doing if I think of her, call someone, sit on my deck. Those things only feed the delusion. But, one has to realize that even though it seems so incredibly real, it’s not. Whatever the case, mental illness isn’t a valid excuse for mass murder and those need to pay the consequences. I’m sick of people linking murder to mental problems. Unless someone is like that guy who thought he was a wolf and he had to kill demons by eating them alive, the they need prison. That guy didn’t even respond to being shot. He just growled and kept going. Now THAT is true mental illness to the point he didn’t know the reality of what he was doing. ❤️🤟🏻 Anyone can get mental health help if they really want it. I’ve lived in four different towns since I was diagnosed and have always gotten new psychiatrists and therapists. Also, the ER always has psychiatrists on call. If someone goes and mentions killing people, they’ll be admitted to the mental hospital right away. People have to help themselves in the moments of lucidity. It’s pretty rare that someone wouldn’t know deep inside they’re crazy. Even now I think past hallucinations happened but logically, I do know it was just me reacting in an unrelated way. But, I never think or talk about them because nothing good will come from it. I was diagnosed with Bipolar 23 years ago so it’s not my first rodeo. 😉

His father should have never been given the guns to guard anyway. The police should've been granted permission to seize them as soon as it was decided that he was not allowed firearms or access to them.
My father spent 32yrs in the USMC. He once said, "You will never leap over Humbleness and Humility to be deemed Honorable." This is the first time I've seen and heard what that looks like. Thank you James Shaw for your heroic advance to the man man and saving all the lives that early morning. Had he reloaded that gun then more deaths would have ultimately laid at the killer's feet.
They asked if he knew it was wrong and the "expert" witness said no...but he ran. He hid. He planned an escape. People who dont understand wrongfulness don't run.
He also showed up because he felt the Waffle House was WRONGing him by spying on him lol. By his own video evidence he always understood spying, stalking, and breaking and entering were wrong. He was made about it and kept reporting it. But for some reason when it came to murder he was clueless. Makes sense to me.

So many failures in the mental health system & law enforcement!
Great coverage, best I’ve seen on this case.
So he was able to get back into his apartment, shower and gather supplies??!!! The cops thought he was in the area but no one thought of keeping an eye on his apartment?!🙄
I was thinking the same thing.
You know why 😂
Exactly lmao even thou Its really not funny.
This!!
It’s very likely he had these things ready to go before he committed the shooting. And even if he didn’t it doesn’t take that long to quickly shower and gather things together. By the time the cops figured out who he was he had likely already left the apartment.
Not a hero, in your own eyes, but you are definitely a hero to those who survived. In my eyes you are both honest and humble too.
Well done, Kevin! Another excellent episode!
The fact that Travis fled the area shows that he knew his actions were wrong.
Thank you! I was looking for this comment. These professionals are ignoring something very basic. Commit a crime>Run and hide. The very action of the average criminal who knows he’s done wrong but doesn’t want to get caught. Ridiculous!
Not really. He was obviously not in a good mind space. He needs mental health help.
EXACTLY what I just posted
The fact that he said god was literally talking to him shows he did not, that he was clinically insane.
It's not that simple. We don't know what he was running from or why. This man is clearly mentally ill, extremely so.
This is one of the best true crime channels.
Great editing, not a lot of repetition to fill time.
Packed with good information 👍🏼
And no stock photos/videos
This is the first time hearing of this case. So refreshing to hear such a thorough well researched case. Thank you for not telling the same stories we have heard for years. This is my favorite true crime channel. Great work once again😊 My thoughts go out to all of the victims and their families ❤️
It doesn't even matter if the dad knew about the mental illness. He knew the cops took the guns away and told him to keep them safely away from him. To which, he agreed.
He definitely knew...
He had a duty to investigate the mental health of his son before giving them back. It was extremely wrong of him.
Agreed 100%!
too bad he got a slap on the wrist tho.

Schizophrenia is such an awful disease.
His father needs to go to prison for allowing him to have weapons
Absolutely prison time for him.
Civil lawsuits
In 2023 Jeffrey Reinking (his father) was sentenced to 18 months for supplying guns to his son that were used in the massacre. I don’t know if he has served this yet
@@heathersmith8549thank you
It really is. And if there’s ever been a poster child for exactly what untreated and unmonitored schizophrenia looks like, this would be it. 😢
Thank God for James, a true hero! It could've ended alot worse, alot more bodies & alot more funerals & alot more heartache🙏🙏
He was in the right place, right time. Destiney, good thing Taco Bell was closed that night.
We have Ronald Reagan to thank for that. GOP won’t help the mentally ill…they encourage them. 🤦🏼♀️

Your content is so well researched and put together. Thank you for covering these less known crimes x
Utterly heartbreaking 💔 The fact that some people miss such mental health issues, or in some cases choose not to see them, is petrifying 😢
Not seeing it is a symptom of the illness itself. Note: I am not MH professional.
I've watched both starter out and big time followings true crime channels for a few years now in a consistent basis (scary I know...😅) but I just want to say you have a great thing going here and I've found myself looking forward to your videos just as I do for That Chapter, Coffeehouse Crime, etc (the larger channels at this time). I hope for success for you!
It’s sad to say this but the reality of it is; people with untreated mental illness vastly goes overlooked until a tragedy happens. These people become “invisible”
Or sometimes their parents don't want to admit it and they go untreated.
He was nearly 30 and lived away from his parents.
So happy to see a new video. And another job well done! Kevin I need to say that I love your channel, as you cover cases that are not well known. A lot of channels seem to regurgitate the same cases. Thanks again!
I agree.
Just discovered this channel and subscribed. The narration is impeccable, really gives life to the victims.
You did an awesome job of presenting the facts without sensationalism. 🙏✌️🙏
This is one of the most heartbreaking events covered by JTL, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them all. The loss of these extremely talented, intelligent, beautiful people to their families, friends, communities is nothing short of immeasurably tragic.
What an honest, amazing human being James Shaw Jr is and unbelievably humble. Such a sad case. My sympathy to the victim’s loved ones.
Excellent reporting and presentation of this case Just Thought Lounge! Thank you so much for your hard work & for sharing it with us. I mean even the way you worded certain things was so conscious and considerate. Big fan of JTL!
Kevin unbelievable story well told very specific love the channel keep coming back my favorite channel now. Your attention to details incredible plus live footage really helps tell the story. Great to see you're growing followers also.
The standards for "1st degree murder" and "insanity" are insanely low and high (respectively) in the USA. This guy should be (imprisoned) in a pych ward, not the general population of a prison.
I agree
He shouldn’t of been given prison time he obviously needed help
Was his trial during the "summer of love?" I could see a white guy shooting multiple black people and being sent to a hospital as a catalyst for more riots during that period.
Totally agree with you
He might get protective custody but hospital might be better. I don't know how much psychiatric help he would receive in prison.
Dave’s lemonade covered this case and it was beautifully done. I’m curious to see your take Kevin, you also never disappoint:)
Same! Just started 👀
Not a lot was mentioned regarding Perez and the Waffle house employee.
So glad to see something honest about their actions. You are still a hero, and your honesty makes you even more heroic. There was no gushing of "i lnew i had to do it to save others" and stories one would normally hear when a tragedy is happens. Blatant honesty. A testimony to you as a person.
I actually think that what that man said at the end about not being a hero but being selfish in Saving his own life that's actually the definition of a hero he kept cool Under Fire he waited for the right moment to attack and he did it he saved everyone else unfortunately some died before but there was no one else between the gunman and all those people and of course that crazy fool was going to kill them all you are a hero young man just keep the same attitude throughout life and you'll be happy and I hope you have a fruitful life
Hello Kevin ! I always love Sunday because I get to see your UA-cam channel! You're the greatest keep up the great work so so enjoyable!
The set up scene in your introduction is EPIC.
It's like having suspense and already knowing the ending but still getting butterflies in my tummy.
Gosh, to acknowledge you did it to save yourself is humbling... you saved many because you were brave... it took courage to face a killer.
The father should definitly be held accountable
Jeffrey Reinking was found guilty of returning the weapons to his mentally disturbed son and has been sentenced to 18 months in jail
Incredible coverage of this horrific event. Thank you.
Thank you, Kevin! Great piece of work!
So basically this is a case of a parent not understanding how mental health struggles work. And he didn't care enough to find out....I'm willing to bet, the guns going to dad by request was because it was understood they'd be returned at some point.(at least by him)
If he'd been more anchored into his family, this could've been averted. But instead he was a state away and on his own.
I swear to God! How stupid do you have to be to NOT KNOW how f*cking crazy this kid/guy was?!?!?!?
Wonder if the father has a touch of racism passed on to son? Why was an eatery with only black & coloured customers & workers targeted by Travis, when in his mind it was 'Taylor Swift' was stalking him?
Praise be to James
It was also RIGHT NEXT DOOR.
That seems harsh. Knowing about schizophrenia and actually trying to help someone who has it, can be very different things. His father was absolutely wrong to return the guns. My dad was a scientist who did research about schizophrenia.
Sees racism in everything. Stop already. You don't want me to give you the stats on the flip side here.
I love your videos, Kevin, they are always so brilliantly done. 👍

Thanks for covering this story!! Those young ladies were/are my sorority sisters. ❤
Excellent coverage, and you really do make one think. This was so sad and such a waste. Heartbreaking.
The fact that he fled the scene proves that he knew his actions were wrong.
If he wanted to escape he'd have taken his car which was right there. Instead he went home where everyone knew he was
If he thought those people were out to get him what would he stay and eat waffles with them? or leave and go home?
Not necessarily.
He thought people, including the police were after him.
Nonsense. It means he was trying to escape from his delusional version of the Waffle House people after he'd been disarmed.
No so..Forensic Psych RN here x 32 yrs..totally delusional ..sad all the way around..
What up dude. I watch alot of true crime. Like probably more than a normal person should. I came across your channel and have been binge watching. What makes your channel so good is you give the facts right to the point you don't use all the fluff and nonsense that other channels do. You deserve a show on primetime television!
Thanks John, appreciate it!
I'm normal and also watch A LOT of true crime. You like whatcha like.
You have a way of telling stories. They are so detailed - and riveting to hear everything. Good job .. keep it up !!!!
Why didn't the police stake out his apartment? Total incompetence by the police officers.. unexcusable.. they would have never solved this crime if the entire incident wasn't on video for them.. they just had a couple of things to do and they couldn't even do those right
That was my thought exactly. Wow. Couldn’t believe it.
Cops are basically ... DUMB! The sharpest people in school RARELY become policeman. Usually jocks or bullies ...

This was very well done. His father absolutely should have known better.
Didn’t expect to feel a little sorry for this guy. He’s really out of his mind.
That young man who disarmed the shooter was so humblingly honest. What a great guy.
Seen this on Dave’s lemonade, was my favorite! Really neat to watch the event on video while watching the court case ….they have both done a really good job explaining what happened!
Why did he run and hide if he didnt know it was wrong what he did?
Exactly.
Because he knew what he did. Sometimes the crazy cards can fool the courts.
He has schizophrenia. Read more about it. Don’t be ignorant
@@limiaa744 if you'll notice I have already also commented "oh" after I heard that fact for myself. I'm not ignorant, really. Don't be rude to others with your words. Thank you
He didn't run, he walked away and left. wouldn't he have taken his car if he wanted to escape and not go straight back home to his apartment where everyone knew he was?
For some reason, my most vivid memory of this case is the guy ranting that he always keeps the toilet seat down.
Wow. Sad he never got the help he really needed. And sadly everyone lost out.
Yo I’ve been watching all your stuff I possibly can. It’s great. Thank u
I APPRECIATE your brutal honesty!
Never in my life i felt so much pity for a defendant as this one. Look at his face after he was 'deemed' fit to face trial... Mental illness is not evil is just disease...so sad
That young man had the courage and bravery to protect his life and the Humble presence to be honest about his true intentions (saving MY life) and the humility to resist being called a "hero." That's about as honorable as it gets. 💪🏿
32:57 wow got to respect his honesty 🙏🏻
Oh hey Kevin, thanks for another upload!

The man who saved those people at The Waffle House is an amazing, composed, humble, and impressive man. Very well-spoken and brave. Bravo!
