Death of a loved one is never easy, but such an abrupt and unexpected loss is a trauma many can't understand and, of course, no decent human being would wish that understanding on anyone.

They loved her so much. To come from a quiet room, painting and thinking, and smoking cigarettes, to all of this unexpected love and adoration must have been uniquely validating and overwhelming. These songs were recorded about 50 years ago. If it were me, I would have thought they would have forgotten all about this music and me. But, no. They were singing along and applauding her essence. Music is timeless, and so is Ms. Joni Mitchell.

If you were of age back then...you'd know her words penetrated into our DNA and hard drive like few other words so rare. Her lyrics sometimes float around freely when I need something to say....Yes, they were 50 years ago, but for most of her audience, they would have been around 20 at that time, so it goes round like that. I doubt she thought they would have forgotten. I sang along at her concert in 1976, I was 28.

Why this still sounds as good as it did 50+ years ago, is the combination of the pure beauty of the minor key chords and the soaring melody, together with words of absolute honesty expressing innocent, but nevertheless still wise, love. Such combinations do not happen often in music, but when they do they are timeless and will last forever.

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said: Constantly in the darkness
    Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
    Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh, you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet
Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
    I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me, you said
    Love is touching souls
    Surely you touched mine cause
Part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
I met a woman, she had a mouth like yours, she knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds and she said
Go to him, stay with him if you can
    But be prepared to bleed
But you are in my blood, you're my holy wine
You're so bitter, so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, oh darling

This performance literally brought tears a streaming :-) As a PURE compliment to Joni's genius is Brandi Carlile's AMAZING angelic voice! A little lyric play and detail that may not be all that obvious to folks who don't live in Canada where Joni is from, is the subtle reference to our Canadian National anthem, when she sings "Oh Canada . . . " . . . CLEVER song writing :-) She is a treasure . . .

You, incredible person, sang me through life. I cried then at the magic of your creative, masterful lyrics and soulful voice. My heart aches, and I cry now from the memories of loves lost, families gone as it was your voice that comforted me as it still does. You are a legend. No one will ever come close to your talent. Someone said Nobel, I agree.

The POWER of sublime JONI and this accompanying voice of this singer Brandi. Even the deep rich voice JONI, even after being a chain-smoker... like a miracle unfold.
I can drink a case of JONI and STILL be on my feet.
But honestly, i have other singers i love just much if not more ,but it's simply because there is no BEST.
Every CLASSIC female i love is because they belong in a class all their own.
Being a singer-songwriter myself, self-taught on guitar& having a trans-continental style & love of music, JONI is right up there on my list.
There is so much love in this video! It makes me cry.

The piano player does such a great job helping Joni sing these lyrics. He's not getting the credit he deserves in this performance. You can see Brandi nod at the pianist at @1:45 signaling that he needs to sing over Joni's lyrics. The 3 of them did a beautiful performance.
I've never head this song performed more beautifully and by three individuals.
