One of the most wonderful things about being 59 is this. I heard, saw and drank in the music of legends like Joni Mitchell. I soak it in like a sponge. I just introduced my 5 year old granddaughter to Joni Mitchell today. At 5 my grandchild is just like me.She love the sound of such a sweet voice. So i taught her"The circle game" just 10mins.She had it.Then i heard her telling "Alex, play Joni Mitchell ".At 5 and in first class at school my mum was told by the nuns " keep her singing ". I did.My children are singers and now my grandchildren.I am very proud to say Joni Mitchell is from Irish blood. Im Irish and very proud. Music has got me through hell.To be privileged to have lived parallel to amazing singers, songwriters and musicians like Joni Mitchell has been a gift and i hope i have passed that gift on to two generations. ☘

I met Sue on open mic night at a Tacoma bar in 1977. She was playing guitar, singing this song and looking right at me. I drummed up the courage to ask her to play while I tried to sing Carolina In My Mind. It didn't go well because I can't sing worth a damn, but I went home with her and we were married six months later.

But I've just seen and heard an angel, and a soul I didn't know I had

    [Verse 1]
Just before our love got lost you said
"I am as constant as a northern star"
And I said, "Constantly in the darkness
    Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar"
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
    Oh, Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
    [Chorus]
Oh, you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh, I would still be on my feet
    [Verse 2]
Oh, I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
    I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me, you said
    "Love is touching souls"
    Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
    Chorus]
Oh, you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
    [Verse 3]
    I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
    She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
    And she said
"Go to him, stay with him if you can
    But be prepared to bleed"
    [Chorus]
Oh, but you are in my blood, you are my holy wine
You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
Still I'd be on my feet

Tree Funk Jones I would not have been hipped to Joni were it not for Prince. He was giving her props as early as 1980. And I’m grateful he did. Between the two of them, music just exudes and exalts Joy for me.

My Father raised me on Joni. We saw her in concert for her Both Sides Now tour. We both choked on tears through the whole thing. Her older voiced Blue was a heavy blanket.
My Father died a few years later of lung cancer at 52. I was 26. I am now 41 and the song Blue breaks me to no end. That and River. I wish I had one to just skate away on...
Maybe fly? Anything to see that sweet man again.

I saw Joni for the first time in 1983. I had waited years to see her. She played on Boston Common. It was horrible. She was about a half hour - 45 minutes late. Then, when she came out, she played for a few minutes and then walked off the stage in a huff, saying she could t play when people were still walking to their seats. She came back after a bit, then played for 30 minutes tops. My mom and I were SO upset. Turns out, at this time in her life, she had a bad cocaine habit. Now I understand. Thankfully, I saw her about 12 years later at the New Orleans Jazz Festival (we went because she was headlining). She was sublime. I’m so happy that I got to see her in top form. I love Joni so much. I’m thankful for that day, and for her masterful body of work. She’s amazing. Oh! And I was able to see one of her paintings in real life. A friend was house sitting for her accountant in Massachusetts. That was very special, too! I have photos of it somewhere!

Probly most of her fans, never knew of her struggles with illnesses, which kept her from performing for long length of time; or that she was essentially not supported by her family, in her pursuit of her arts, nor much of anything else.
From great heartbreak, can come great art...Joni is one!

Isn't it the freedom of the swaying rhythm that is essence of the song? It creates a feeling of a time of love, gone, but still longed for. It's a masterwork no matter how you take it.
