Oh lawd... Is it true that the quality of the master copy rather dark & blue in color? Its not a good song in any way. Adele's Someone Like You is a million times better. This song doesn't carry any good melody or harmony at all. Just strings of words that Joni made different notes of. Has no cohesiveness. The line Canada, oh Canada. Lmao wtf. Hilarious
Prince always focused on that one verse -- "I am a lonely painter / I live in a box of paint / I'm frightened by the devil / but I'm drawn to those who ain't / afraid" and I think that's because he knew deeply what Joni meant by it, in a way that's visible to those looking from the outside of that creative process but not really comprehensible to those, well, that ain't on the inside.
Love your words, so true. He loved her for being out of the box, and that one line message we who are out of the box get it. Both are beautiful 'in tune' souls with life and what goes beyond...
Your comment to this song, - about Prince, about Ms. Mitchell, artists - and the process - is one of the most profound, revealing statements that I have had the pleasure to read. Artists and their creations make this world so much more nuanced and we are all enriched by their creations.
Still I just wish he’d just once do the whole thing. I would have loved to hear him sing “just before our love got lost you said....” and “I drew a map of Canada.....oh Canada.....with your face sketched on it twice.”

In a book I read about Prince, it said that it was a Joni Mitchell concert that was one of the very first concerts Prince ever attended at a pretty young age and he had a seat close to the stage. She actually told him that she remembers seeing him in the audience. So weird. They ended up being friends and Wendy tells a story about how they (she, Prince and Lisa) visited Joni at her house. Prince went over to Joni’s piano and started playing and she said “that’s beautiful….what is it?” And he told her it is your song! (Not sure which one he was playing).
Excellent! The meaning behind, I could drink a case of you and I'd still be on my feet is so powerful. One can be drunk from someone else's love but still be sober enough to really see who they are. I think its why Prince loves the song so much. Joni Mitchell is a prophet.
I've heard she will perform again this year. Even if I would be in the US this time, It would be needless to try to grab some tickets. So, seeing her live once will stay a dream. Also, I would cry the whole time and afterwards, I would be angry at me, while crying, I can't listen very well.

A Case Of You
Joni Mitchell, James Taylor
Just before our love got lost, you said
"I am as constant as a northern star, " and I said
"Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me, I'll be in the bar"
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh, Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh, you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter
And so sweet, oh
I could drink a case of you darling, and I would
Still be on my feet
Oh, I would still be on my feet
Oh, I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time you told me, you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine, 'cause
Part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter
And so sweet, oh
I could drink a case of you, darling
Still, I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours, she knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds, and she said
"Go to him
Stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed"
Oh, but you are in my blood, you're my holy wine
You're so bitter
Bitter and so sweet, oh
I could drink a case of you, darling
Still, I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
Hmm

As expected 💜💜💜
I hear the makings of another lonely Christmas in that piece.
Thanks Brandi for turning me on to this on Sirius Somewhere over the Radio today. I’m crying because the song is so beautiful, so beautifully done and that Prince is not going to be able to do it again on this side of the veil. 😢 😭 😿
I wept when I listened to this Joni Mitchell cover by Prince... beautiful arrangement. Abbreviated and sublime.
Intersting version. He really makes it his own.
Thank you for posting this. Bloody genius:
Prince Rogers Nelson
the closest thing to the source of music this world has ever seen. !!!!

Only Prince was even close to as good as Joni Mitchell singing this song
Actually, there's a woman, JK Jones, who does very goid Joni covers, right here on youtube..
He had to grow into this song...vocally and spiritually.
Years later
He did.
God bless you Prince.

L'arrangiamento di Prince in questo pezzo rivela un talento enorme come pochi sanno fare ! Prince e Jony Mitchell immortali con la loro arte che è fuori dal tempo! 💞
