- Navy Attempt: • Could A Modern US Carr...
Today we simulate a modern USAF fighter bomber air wing travelling back in time to 1940 to the Battle Of Dunkirk. Can they do a better job than the US Navy did in a previous War Game?

@grimreapers - Thanks for the video guys! Cap, I got a weird request, could you reenact the final attack mission (scene) of the movie Top Gun Maverick? I am sure there are aspects of it that you can't, but it would be fun to see what the Grim Reapers could come up with!
ua-cam.com/video/r6bc886E-4U/v-deo.html
@@grimreapers - Thanks Cap, I was thinking of the scene where you all would start on the carrier in F/A-18's and fly in formation through steep mountainous or valley terrain layered with SAMs and attack a target similarly like they did in the movie.
In life three things are guaranteed.
1. Death
2. Taxes
3. Dark shooting blues
lol
That's why they call him Dark I suppose )
One thing the Sim cannot reproduce and model is the surprise and horror the Axis fighter would have felt when their wingmen were blowing up from an unknown missile or the shock at seeing fighters jets! I think they would have ran for their lives to regroup and figure out what was happening. Same with the ground forces!
Would they even see the missiles? Wouldn't they just think the explosion was really well aimed Flak?
@@dexionsgamingcorner310 They might not realize it’s a missile, but they would also know it wasn’t typical AA
Like everybody in 1940 would be fine with a blue hedgehog running down the street with fire coming from its feet.
I think the shock value would only last a couple of days. From a dogfight perspective a warbirds slow speed and maneuverability would eat a jet alive. Granted of the jet doesn't want to be engaged, it would just run off and the warbird would never catch it.
And just the max afterburner "show of force" low pass over the German ground forces would have made them halt!
Cap: *chooses F-16 even though F-15E is available*
Cap 5 seconds later: "Why am I out of fuel?"
I’ve been subbed just long enough to know that it’s not a GR video if Cap hasn’t miscalculated or forgotten how to operate the aircraft he chose. I’d be mildly disappointed if it all went to plan and without a hitch.
lols you got me!
@@EeekiE Those days are scary.
And why transit so,close to the ground anyway? But that’s part of the fun. I know it’s hard to,play, film, and provide commentary
Simba: "Anything you can do, I can do BRRRRRRRTer."
Every one of these "modern solutions to historical problems" scenarios makes me think of the 1980 movie "The Final Countdown".
I'd loved that movie when I was a kid and I've always loved the F-14
I'm pretty sure that movie was the inspiration for all of this.
I really hate that movie because the creators chickened out and did not show the real action. I understand, budgets and stuff, bit that sucks.
Have to make do with gr and books like the Kirov series, there's lots of anachronistic action there (though it gets too convoluted and silly the further you go in the series).
I havent seen TFC but from YT comments i find randomly it sounds pretty good
@@thedyingmeme6 it is, mainly due to the real carrier and the real planes they got to play with
I like how when you guys travel back in time, you take the orbital positioning satellites with you.
I just asked that question also.
@@neruil77 Its been asked multiple times before by others, but hey if it makes you feel superior rather than just enjoying the video you be you. It says more about your personality than the video
@@Mr2greys WTF.. where the hell, do you get I'm superior at? You on drugs? If you think, me asking a simple question is acting like I am superior, you have issues and you need a psychiatrists
Just kids in the US imagining how great they are and showing the world what great tits they are.
@Mr2greys It's a legitimate question, As it affects the way the GPS bombs could be used.. and as entertaining as it is, It doesn't do anything to answer the hypothetical situation. If the battle is won by weapons that would not work as effectively back then, Ie the sim should be re-run using non GPS bombs to see if the original derp changes anything much..
Bring in the AC-130s at night. I can just imagine the reaction of disbelief when the reports of these fighter jets being used got to Hitler and Goering.
They're neither jets nor fighters.
Bruh AC130's arent fighters (Attack-Cargo craft) nor are they JETS (they use turboprop/turboshaft engines)
“Help!” - Fly
I’m glad I wasn’t expecting an incident free video with Fly.
I dunno ... seemed pretty ... SUPER-FLY this mission!
41:49 Technically, in your navy version, you only lost 4 aircraft during combat. The remaining three were lost during (edit: carrier mishaps. One launch failure and two landing failures at the very end)
Yes, but none of the USAF aircraft were lost in combat. They were all friendly fire or crash-landing.
@seangfoster1974 Friendly fire doesn't count as lost in combat? The navy losses were:
1. Cap's self-imposed maneuver kill
2. Friendly fire.
3. Unknown.
4. Catapult launch failure.
5. Cap lost fuel just short of the carrier.
6. Carrier landing.
7. Carrier landing.
The air force losses were:
1. Friendly fire.
2. Bad spawn position.
3. Some crash?
4. Friendly fire.
5. I think the A-10 was taken out by enemy fire.
6. Unknown.
7. Cap ran out of fuel almost the same distance from the runway as he was from the carrier when he had to ditch there. 😂
@@hanrockabrand95 I'm a witness! Defective wiring on Cap's F-16 caused spontaneous detonation of all his stores!
@@hanrockabrand95 6 was friendly fire.
Hello Reapers, I'm a huge fan of your channel and I particularly enjoy your WWII scenarios. So much in fact that I found a mission just for you. In 1944, Jimmy Doolittle launched an airstrike, code named Operation Thunderbolt, on the German super fortress, Fort Driant, with P47s. The mission was to destroy the fort, but they were unsuccessful. Later the fort was placed under siege by General Pattons forces until its eventual Surrender. Today, the fortress still stands. My question is, what WWII era weapons would the Grim Reapers choose and, also, what would it take using today's technology to destroy such a behemoth? I would really love to see you guys run this scenario in gameplay on DCS. Anyway, thank you for the videos and I'll be looking forward to more WWII scenarios.
Zero fuel is actually just another aspect of Cap's patented "Bollocks Maneuver".
yes
This was, as ever, highly entertaining thanks guys. BUT - US fighting in Europe prior to 1942? No no no no no!! We need the definitive edition of this mission featuring only the RN and RAF, so Typhoons, Harriers, Tornados & Jaguars please Cap!!
hmmm will try.
@@grimreapers Does this mean I need to learn the Typhoon?
Hunters and Lightnings F4s would suffice for Dunkirk. Supermodern stuff is overkill.
Jesus, watching that 105 site get mauled by the cluster bomb is scary as hell. What a terrifying weapon for people on the ground.
They are banned in the UK, we are not allowed cluster weapons.
@@grimreapers USA can spot you a few. Will trade for quality cheese.
@@BobTheHappyDinosaurC H E E S E
There wasn't a Geneva suggestion around in WW2 so cluster bombs are a valid tactic.
It's not a war crime if you are the first to do it right?
@@samuraidriver4x4 Cluster munitions aren't banned by Geneva. Just restricted due to treaty by most countries, and heavily disliked due to high dud rates.
19:00 Fly is hilarious man. "I lost one engine but im ok with that"
Cap-"Friendy fire is going to ruin our efficiency. The editing and filming was top notch like always.
I have not yet watched this video.
That said, the video thumbnail image is *GREAT!!*
The Navy has cluster weapons. It is an optional warhead on the Tomahawk missile.
Are they sensor fused thought? I thought only USAF has these sensor fused versions that are so damaging.
@19:28 It's a good thing you're not doing naval sims: "If you're not lucky, we can't use you." - Captain Ron Wiltsie, USN
Nice Fly!!! Great death star run.
B1b @ 40k_ft (service ceiling 60k), untouchable.
- Zero's R fragile, A10's aren't that vulnerable (put a couple of sidewinders??? ).
-F16 & A10's full of mavericks (forget guns)
-f15s loaded with sidewinders for cover (don't dogfight, 10 mile range).
I really don't think they are using the A-10 to its best ability. Also there is no coordinated strikes and sorties. its just fly up and shoot things. This is not how one would say how A would do against B.
37:44 I was informed today by a former F-22/F-15 repair crew chief that the F-16 is referred to as a "lawn dart" because it lacks redundant systems it noses for the ground.
The f16 is also designed to be aerodynamically unstable (they have computers to deal with it tho)
"Slimy, yet satisfying."
Blue Angles here in Vero Beach, Florida this week. they are buzzing my house right now.
Don't forget to account for cost: Navy was more than $1 billion but USAF was just over $600 million (until that very last landing/crash). So USAF did better in that regard.
27:50 Cap casually calling Germans coldblooded reptilians... And he got away with it :P
I was looking at the engines of the B1 in the thumbnail and looking at my model hanging above my head ...and something ain't right🤨
The thumbnail, it’s AI generated! Impossible!
19:19 "I'm in Danger" Ralph Wiggum
Thank you for the constant content. Makes my dead time bearable.
I think the best combo would be Navy fires missiles at Warbirds, B1s for the bunkers, Mix of Air Force Navy for soft targets, troops, tanks, etc.
I guess the War Thunder meme of "Teammates are just enemies in blue." is a universal term.
Dark has a better blue on blue ratio than blue on red haha
Old Navy guy here. I heard that comment, Cap. I'm pointing the knife hand *directly at you*.
You can feel it, can't you?
😉
lol run away!
Nicely done by all!
It’s a GREAT DAY!
fun idea Cap same mission but everyone gets to pick their favorite Aircraft to fly see how that matches up
As i flicked on the kettle i was saying to my dog Gary, "Hey Gary, i wonder if a non nation specific Bomber Air Wing could have changed the course of events in say a famous World War Two battle".
And what do you know, those Reaper chaps have done just that.
My pet snail is named Gary
I had the exact same conversation with my hamster.
Small world, isn't it.
Just remember, it's only a problem to talk to your pets when they start to talk back, and give you really interesting ideas.
@@brian_sipe its only a problem when I don't actually have a dog
Look at us basically having the same brain...
Can you imagine a brace of F22's just flying 100 feet above the battlefield at 1500 mph, that would be enough to scare the B-Jesus out of the Axis
Now, navy and airforce joint operation, with the marines on a rescue mission.
And yet Army was actually there
That thumbnail is BADASS
Agreed. Need wallpaper version.
lol thats one LOOONG boat in the AI generated thumbnail :)
lol yeh I had to do a lot of MS paint corrections.
@grimreapers cap i love the content. i got an idea how about building a mission to show which country has the best tank killer setup when it comes to planes
The aaa is absurdity accurate. Its a big issue on ww2 missions imo. Goid video though.
What about trying this with a joint RAF Typhoons and F-35's Air Wing, along with a Royal Navy Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers plus three Type 45 Destroyers and three new Type 26 Frigates too, with FAA F-35B's and AAC Ah-1E's Gunnership's as well, Wining The Battle Of Dunkirk too?
That thumbnail! Epic.
The main reason for your high friendly fire is the lack of combat controllers to deconflict.
Yarp
While I enjoyed the Navy option more (USS Saratoga in the late 80's) really enjoying your Air Force version.
My favorite is the guy trying to say Fokkerwulf all the time because he always sounds like he's being a pottymouth but he ain't. I thought he called something unfuckable for a second.
Tru story after ww2 an ace was giving a talk at a girls boarding school. He began talking about finding himself in a target rich environment. “ there were three f-kers to my right, 4 f-kers to my left and another 2 f-kers about a thousand feet above.” At that point the headmistress interrupted and said “ students it’s important to understand that a fokker is a type of air plane.” The pilot then replied “ yes ma’am but these f-kers were flying meschersmits….” Sir douglas bader. The “fat electrician “ channel has a hilarious documentary video on him…and if this is your first contact with the fat electrician you’re welcome. Funniest military documentaries out there.
Cap, sir.
If you have time could you please do a video about how you make a mission. Since I sent you the idea for that mission I've been thinking about how much I don't know about DCS. I think it might help anyone who has an idea in the future.
✋😀

Thank you. 😀👍
Great video. Now we demand combined Navy carrier strike force and Air Force joint operation. ALSO Space Force, they can be cheerleaders.
Hello! May I suggest to do this same exercise, but of all of you using the Community A4-E for bombing and intercept? Just put it in to make it a bit more "balanced". The 50's-60s' technology would make it as good as modern tech would do?. Thanks for the great videos and tutorials.
I'm guessing that NCIS made you rig this one.
NCIS ain't got nuffin on me.
Atta boy Fly! That looked awesome!
Those CBUs are awesome.
I'm just wondering, would the radar of the day be setting off the alarms in the advanced aircraft?
You guys are amazing. One more inept than the next. If you want to do things right, why don't you plan anything?
Concerning the previous video: What if you ran the same scenario using .50cal/20mm P-38 Lightning and/or 20 or 30mm canon in the Mosquito? Both were fielded in the European theater in those configurations, and both have a single, forward field of fire?
watching both videos. the CPU took a more active role in the last video which allowed for more targets to be destroyed because it didnt have to verify a target was gone, it would already know and choose another. also the fact that you had to respawn at an airfield farther away from the targets meant more time wasted which lead to the end results.
Fun, but more jeopardy!
That was entertaining.
The thumbnail for this video was a bloody work of art. Cap - if you see this, any chance you can make it available in 4k and 3840x1600 for download?
We actually got AI to make it for us. Sure.
Would love to see what the B52s can do in that situation. Complete grid square removal.
Follow-up video - "How does GR bring back GPS satellites and place them into orbit prior to launching a "What If" mission with modern kit." NASA surely must be involved with the whole time-warp space-time continuum field generation. We all know Cap didn't do well in Astrophysics and Quantum Mechanics in primary school 🤣🤣 Fun mission boyz!! Video Valued by Valued Viewer - Fly Army 🚁

All of these weapons work without GPS. It is assumed that China is going to jam all GPS during a battle, so these weapons and aircraft revert from EGI to INS guidance.
I would be very surprised if its NO
NOt going to waste my time watching this vid
I got a B-Oner
Yes the psychological effects of bvr combat and planes moving at mach 1 would lead to panic.
Of course!
ive been to ask could the sensor fused pucks of the f16s cluster munitions (if deployed high enough) detect and shoot down drones
I bet they could.
Potentially possible, but the timing must be hard to nail.
14:31 "...they elected to receive..."
Noice!
Where's Damp?
My suggestion organise one player to be the target selector and load organiser
I kinda want to see them use a sky warden just to see how effective they could be
I'm pretty sure when they crash, you have to call them a "Good German."
aaand demonetized.
When GR wants to do a serious simulation, but the rest of his squad wants to have a good time. 🤣
It's like a sequel to Final Countdown.
I'm pretty sure GPS wasn't around till much after WW2 so can't really use JDAM's can you :)
Navigation would also be a challenge I think.
Shoot man, a couple of a C1 30s probably could have swung the battle
Question, how would the GPS bomb's work? Since there no satellite in 1940's.
You cannot use the JDAM with it's GPS guidance if you don't have the satellites and necessary infrastructure.
It was just the carrier group brought back in time, so they should not have had GPS either.
You'd better include the B-ONE-R in the re-make of this.
Cluster munitions...when everything in a square mile area must die.

Idea: who would win modern British and Argentinian jets fight in the Falkland wars with modern navy
Here in the States we don't call the A-10 a gau. We call them BRRRTTTT.
Before I watch, I'm saying better than the Navy. But again, I'm an Air Force brat....lol
The one issue I have with all of this is that in the 1940s there were no GPS satellites, so anything GPS related such as bomb guidance wouldn't work.
The boys toys would be meaner, but not necessarily smarter.
What would happen if you had JSTARs linking the AA targets to the F-15Es? And the F-15C/F-16 running CAP for the airborne threats until they are eliminated then the A-10s come in for the rest of the ground targets and then the rest of the fleet convert to air to ground?
The irony of the A-10 being the victim of friendly fire, for once…
at around 4:40 there seems to be a bug in the game :D The player follows the other plane which has the afterburner on... the exhaust is shown correctly and it appears to be hot... lots of turbulence etc... But this seems to affect the HUD as well which i guess is a bug :D or he was really too close :D
lol, it was nice of us to bring the GPS constellation into 1940...
All of these weapons work without GPS. It is assumed that China is going to jam all GPS during a battle, so these weapons and aircraft revert from EGI to INS guidance.
Good thing INS drift isn't a thing then.
you have advanced radar guided gun sights and still use missiles. that really blows my mind. just strap on a bunch of cannons.
Fuck. Fly. Well, I WAS excited for this video.
lol
Was the navy battle peak 70-80s battle ships? I’d think their main guns/cannons could beat up a lot!
keep in mind for the cost of one of those jets, the Luftwaffe could have likely built about 120 fokkers...
It woulf be really cool to compare a AT802 vs say a stuka that is really simular planes.
could an Airwing preempt the invasions of both Holland and Belgium just smashing Luftwaffe aerodromes?
Go Navy!!!
Fly Navy! Actually, as a former Naval Aviator, I would say definitely fly Air Force. Flight school won't be as fun but everything after that is waaaay better. Still, nice to see the home team win once in a while.
Wonder what an AC130 would have been able to do as well
Can america defend itself from an attack from the north and south with missle attacks from the east and west?
Canada has those two squadrons of American Bomarc missiles... 🤔
Defend from north and south with missile coming from east and west?
Actually yes please! I would love to see a re-enactment of the old school board game "Fortress America" where the US simultaneously came under attack by the Soviets from the East, the South American Alliance from the South, and the Pan Asian Collective from the West. Unfortunately I bet that would melt any server they tried to play it on. It might make a fun campaign though.
