***Important*** 16 Steps to Becoming a FLORIDA Resident!

So...you're moving to Florida? Do YOU know what you have to do to PROVE you're becoming a FLORIDA RESIDENT?
You'd better know...or else. If you live in the "wrong" state (e.g. New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, California), your home state does not want you to take your $$$$$ out of state.
They NEED your $$$$$.
Some states will fight you tooth and nail for more of your $$$$.
For more than 20 years as a Sarasota real estate agent, I have sat in meetings with clients, attorneys, and CPAs who craft "exit" plans for people who choose to leave states that believe your money/assets/businesses are THEIRS.
To become a FLORIDA resident, one must do more than purchase a property. Incidentally, depending on the state where you live and want to leave, you may encounter the "Hotel California."
To change residency to Florida for tax purposes, the most important things are to record a Florida declaration of domicile, register to vote in Florida, and change your driver’s license to Florida.
Most states implement what is known as the 183-day rule, which requires that a person reside in Florida for at least 183 days (more than six months) to be considered a resident.
A person can own multiple residences, but can only have one domicile. A domicile is your true home, where you intend as your family’s base.
Several acts contribute towards proof of residency in Florida. Some of the most important items include recording a declaration of domicile, changing your driver’s license, and registering to vote.
The 183-day rule refers to how long someone must live and physically be present in Florida before being considered a Florida resident by a person’s former state of residence.
There is no cost to becoming a Florida resident. All you have to do is move to the state and follow the residency requirements.
A Florida residence is the place where you reside with the intent to make it your permanent home. For homestead exemption purposes, you must prove to the specific Florida county’s property appraiser that your home is your primary residence.
