When my 5 kids were all living at home, I used to call clean-out-the-fridge night "International night" or "smorgasbord night" and the kids thought it was fancy! Lol
My brother and his 1st wife would call it potluck Fridays. They would put all the leftovers from the week all in one pot. He said it really was pretty good except for one time. He said the tuna salad really didn’t work! 😂
Watching the older boys crack me up. I see my own boys. When they are young, they are gung-ho with whatever chores. Now, it's rake for a few seconds, take a break, distract Dad with conversation, and repeat. 😂
Have you considered clover? I mean unless you want the mulch look. It chokes out the grass, feeds the trees and plants, attracts pollinators, cool and soft on barefoot babies, doesn't need mowed, self sows and spreads. You can even forage it for salads... tastes like pea shoots. It's our solution to horizontal grasses and our yard is now full of white dutch clover, purple deadnettle, hensbit, yellow dock, wild violets, ramps and dandelion. All edible and medicinal... all low growing (except the ramps). Great forage for our animals. We're really happy with the progress.
Hey, I have always used grass clippings and leaves for weed suppression. I lay it on thick 3ish inches or more. Wood chips have always sprouted out too many weeds for me. You can still use them as a top dressing and they do look good aesthetically but for weed suppression I recommend heavy leaves or grass clippings then you can add a layer of chips on top. Good luck!
You show there’s no excuse for anyone at your age can’t make homesteading work, of course we are all don’t have the talents you and Meg have! You are definitely a UA-cam one should be subscribed to ! Thank you!
Meg is my kindred spirit! I have a texture issue too! Bananas, marshmallows, gummy candy and grits are my least favorite! And then there are pears! People laugh at me when I say it but, a pear feels like somebody dropped an apple in the sand!
OMG 💓 Little Miss Buggie just steals my heart over and over again. She is adorable. And your boys are growing into wonderful men. You (Meg & Ben) are inspiring. Thank you or sharing your life with us 💛🍀💛
You have a great weeding crew there. So much more enjoyable when there are several of you. Lovely to see Buggie fully recovered. Another great video. 💕💕🌻🌻
Great meal as always. Oh I get so hungry 😅 Love buggy's chatty speaking so well. We need to borrow your boys a couple of days. Have a blessed weekend ❤️🙏
I love the lifestyle you have provided your children even though they are becoming well known through your channel they have the best grounding you could possibly give them in staying real.
Oh the beautiful sounds on your farm. The birds singing and the and the insect sounds. How fortunate you guys are. I know you work hard. But you have such a beautiful family.
Haha there’s a bit of a story to that - I was painting my new beehive with a random paint I found in the barn (when we moved here). Had a bunch left in my paint pan and decided to attack the well house with the rest of it. Not sure if it was good idea or a terrible one 😏😂 ~ Meg
@@TheHollarHomestead I had some relatives in South Dakota back around 1900..this couple did not get along, and eventually divorced, the final straw was one of this couple wanted the Barn one color, the other, another color…so they went half and half, and then she caught him trying to paint her side, his color. Enjoy all the videos. Would like to see some caption when Meg is seasoning food. The family is so lucky to have a good cook as Meg. All of your talent of welding. Carpentry. Gardening . And passing all these experiences down to your children is priceless. Keep going and I will keep watching.
You say that you think people watching you ( and the family) pull weeds is boring but I find it inspirational - if you are doing it then I should have a go in my garden.

I rewatched this it blessed me to see your boys me with Buggie, they are so tender with her, it is so sweet watching them with her. To see them, Make sure she doesn't fall out of the door , out the wagon, what ever it is, they love their little sister. so, so sweet. Melt my heart!! Meg you are both are such hard worker, yeah you do don't go punch in to clock in anywhere , but boy do you put in the time and then some .
Awesome watching everyone pulling weeds. It always goes better when everyone is involved. Growing up we ate everything from the pig. Today most people throw the head away. Blessings on you guys🙂
Bermuda grass is my curse here in SoCal. It sneaks up through the thick layer of woodchips. I find the best way to get rid of it is to dig it up by the root clumps, which can look like spaghetti. Any piece of root left will sprout. It takes time, but that is the only way.
Created a Easter leftover casserole that was awesome. Stewed onions & bell pepper , added ham chunks and browned it up. Added corn & green beans , garlic powder, pepper, and any spice you like. Put in casserole pan , shredded cheese on top , then topped with mashed potatoes and a little more shredded cheese on top. Baked at 350 for 25 minutes. Oohhhh so good and gets rid of most leftovers.

Buggie is so cute. She has pretty curls and talks so sweet. The boys work hard and Meg is an angel not leaving you out Ben. You work doubly hard and video person We say farmer
I grew up on a 50 acre farm, somewhat “hilly” like yours. We butchered hogs each winter. None of the meat went to waste, including the head, which my mother cooked and made it into a type of “snack meat”. It was jelled together and Mother called it “souse”. It was spicy hot, and we sliced to use for an appetizer with crackers, cheese, veggies, and other snacks. It was delicious!
Ben I'm glad that you teach other people that there's lots of good meat on the pig's head that can be used ,they throw it away because they don't know how to prepare and cook it. I'm glad that I learned how to cook that part of the pig it is delicious unfortunately its not sold in the grocery store
Maybe someone else knows; this is just our experience. Use pecan shells for mulch. They are acidic but break down slowly. What we saw was a few years that Bermuda did not grow where the pecan shells where laid down. We have pecan growers in our area so we can get a load of shells pretty cheap. The Bermuda problem is real. It grew over foot deep mulch piles and took over our raised beds. If your soil is super acidic I might not use them. Some acid loving plants like blueberries would love them.
Beef cheeks and Tongue soooo good .. the way I do it and a lot of my friends do it is we put it in the crockpot about 11 o’clock (Saturday)at night with whatever we want to season or onion or garlic whatever you wanna put in there and then in the morning on Sunday morning it’s tender season. It’s ready and we eat it with whatever tortillas, corn ,flour whatever you want avocado …,I love it with avocado that’s how we do it for Sunday Barbacoa’
You can have a lot more land for animals or whatever if you break down some of those trees and you’ll have extra wood chips from them as well break down all the trees and build your land!
Ben, in this day and age with all the craziness watching you and the kids pull weeds is heavenly as well as Meg in the kitchen cooking, by the way Meg thanks for the description of the cheek and muscle. Blessings to you all. 😊🇺🇲
Ben, I know you don't understand why anyone would watch weed pulling. But, we enjoy all the mundane things, because its like we are there with you. One thing I always enjoyed was sitting anywhere with my Mom , grandma ,or people and just chatting. Summers sitting on the porch snapping beans listening to nature and the companionship made it very calming. We really enjoy your company believe it or not. So tape away all you can.
what you are doing is called barbacova which can be made from the pig's head, chick and tongue but also from cow or bull's head and in Texas and most Mexicans its a common dish on the weekend for breakfast with eggs and pinto beans and flour tortillas delicious 😋
Buggy just makes you smile. I am with you the smaller the grind the better. I hate foreign texture in my food. I love the idea of making your own deli meat. I can not eat it with all the added stuff. Your kids eat real food and will talk about what Mom use to make. Us kids do about our Mom. You are living the good old days enjoy them.
I got behind a week in viewing your videos! I hope you guys had a great Easter! Meg left to do the "grind"? Are you pulling my leg/weeds Ben? Wow, does that look a ton better in the orchard! Too bad you got rained out but you needed to stop for lunch anyway! So glad you could eat leftovers. Love the sweet potatoes sprouting in the kitchen window! Yum, cabasa (head) tacos! We had Easter leftovers for dinner tonight! Love those kind of dinners! Basil look nice in the kitchen window too! Thanks for this video Hollar family!
I have so much Bermuda grass and crab grass that if I pull it all up there'd be no grass. I hate that stuff. Once it starts, it devours your good grass. Meg, your meals always makes me want to cook whatever you're having! It always looks so good!!

I put down fabric ground cover for 3ft around my fruit trees and bushes. No weeds
Such a beautiful family. ❤❤❤❤❤
Good evening. I so enjoy watching your videos.
Buggie is so darn cute .
Buggie is really building her on UA-cam presence. What a doll she has become.
The boys are all so handsome. Great family effort today🎉
I was dancing and cooking breakfast to your pop music it was pretty catchy, especially for the fast movement you guys were doing.
I have so much Bermuda grass and crab grass that if I pull it all up there'd be no grass. I hate that stuff. Once it starts, it devours your good grass. Meg, your meals always makes me want to cook whatever you're having! It always looks so good!!
