In1992, my mother and I went to visit a friend of hers from polytechnic Social Worker course.. I met the daughter of the friend, and I met Sarah, who had leukemia and had lost her hair from chemo. We all played together. I loved Sarah's gentleness. A year or so later, I asked about her, and my mother said nonchalantly, " Oh, she died.." That broke my heart. I was 14. Whenever I hear this song, I immediately think of Sarah, whose last name I never found out ❤ Rest now Sarah ❤❤
Many of the lyrics of this song remind me of my relationship with my mother and how it impacted me throughout my life, even well after her death. She said she loved me, but she would frequently isolate me and verbally pick me apart, so I knew she didn't -- but I wanted so badly to believe the lie. As if to remind me that it was simple deceit, there was a time when she pulled back her fist to hit me, only stopping when I got angry and challenged her to do it. She was sick and needed help; help that I couldn't give. After years of PTSD and depression, I had nothing left to give. As her life came to an end -- despite all of my efforts to keep her alive and well -- all she could manage to do was fight with everyone around her. Then, in 2015, she passed on. In one fell swoop, I not only failed to become a god, I also turned my back on the one who had ignored my prayers.
Every time I hear something new by Nightwish, I find that I must compulsively listen to it until I have it memorized, and have studied every single note and its relationship to the notes around it. In my mind, there is no greater song writer in the world than Tuomas Holopainen.
Soul touching lyrics, I nearly cry every time I hear it. Tarja's heavenly voice along with the genius songwriter Tuomas Holopainen's lyrics are ....I have no words to say it.

All it longs for, prays for, fears for compacted in this song has given this song a grace rare to be found.

Neil Hardwick's son is the person who recites the poem.. Neil is a British-born Finnish theatre and TV director and writer. Tuomas has said he definitely wanted that the child must be a native English speaker so he contacted Neil.

This song is definitely one of Nightwish's best! As a writer and poet myself, I can completely relate to the emotions of this song. It is such an embodiment of truth and an utter masterpiece of the soul!
This song’s title became sort of a theme for Nightwish going forward: “Dead to the World”, “Romanticide”, “For the Heart I Once Had”, “The Escapist”, “Last Ride of the Day”, “Song of Myself”…and then Floor Jansen joined the band and the Dead Boy was no more. Kind of feels like the essence of Nightwish, childhood innocence lost as represented by the Dead Boy, is no longer there.
the part from 4:38 to the end is unbelieveable...every instrument and her voice...her voice when singing 'an ocean soul' is, i have no words, just epic..the feeling of this outro is very powerful

I wrote a short story based on the song. It's about a genius IQ boy who knows he's dying and who's a poet and a composer. It's from the perspective of a palliative care nurse named Carolyne who carried out Spencer's dying wish to publish his last composition.
No matter where I look, corner to corner of cultures abound.. Nightwish shall forever endure in my "heart" and capture it time and time again. For it is, to me, exactly as it's name states, a wish upon the night for everything to be better when dawn breaks..
