Cyndaquil, Torkoal, and Fletchling really didn't have bad back stories for Ash. Cyndaquil and Fletchling were caught as wild Pokemon and Torkoal was getting owned by Steel type Pokemon that he was strong against.

You kind of left out their reunion with Stoutland's ghost, but I suppose it wasn't the most important since all that really happened was Stouland showed Torracat how to use fire blast.
I personally would argue that actually is very important in context, seeing how important Stoutland was to Ash's Torracat when it was a Litten. Being able to be reunited with Stoutland and get some much-needed closure probably helped Torracat to become even more motivated to continue to get even stronger
Something that GENUINELY makes me appreciate characters like Team rockets Meowth is that he's evil with morals. Sure they try to steal Pikachu every time and fumble but then Meowth knows loss and sacrifice. He can genuinely understand Pokémon at an emotional level. Meowth is genuinely the goat

I will die mad at how people slept on Pokémon Sun and Moon because of the art change. Once I went back and watched it myself I was so shocked how much it made me cry and equally hype. Ash's family in his Pokémon and in Kukui and his friends was genuinely wonderful.
In a way, I can see that. But there is one big difference that I think is important: Stoutland eventually passes away, but Arvin's Mabosstiff is able to be saved thanks to the power if the herba mystica
Not really true, bc you must help Arven to save Mabostiff by defeating titans for the herbs which succeeded, if this movie came out after the game, they COULD use the same trick to save Stoutland

This Litten's character arc hit me like a dang ton of bricks mixed with cement, bro.... Grief is such a profoundly powerful emotion that no matter how many times it hits you, it doesn't feel any easier to go through than before. I'm really enjoying the backstories they give to the fire starters Ash carries through his journey. It shows his patience with Pokemon that have had a really rough past that make them lash out or retreat due to trauma, but he is always willing to be there for them no matter what side they show. I'm really starting to see how incredible the Pokemon series can be when it comes to their messages and storytelling, especially because they handle the darker stuff with tact and make it still digestible and understandable for a child audience who may also be going through the same things. It's telling them to not give up, to always keep that flame burning bright, even through the pain of it, to become even better than ever before through sheer determination to fight another day.
