Park Tool DIY Shop Stand
I made my own shop stand using a wall mounted clamp and some steel. When my son moved out, he took his portable bike stand with him leaving me with no easy way to work on my bikes. I started pricing stands and realized for a little more money I could make my own shop stand. If you were to price out a Park Tool shop stand with the base, the pole, and a clamp, you would be in the neighborhood of $1,000 depending on your options of course. I realize that this isn't an apples to apples comparison since for $1,000 you would have a brand new clamp, but that wasn't the goal. The goal was to get a "shop" stand for as cheap as possible.
Price breakdown:
Used PRS-4W from E-Bay: $220
Steel plate and pole : $150
Paint : $57
Beer (for payment for someone to weld the pipe to the plate) : $50
Misc Hardware : $25
Ikea Rug (Cykelbana) : $10
Total : $512

Zpacks Pocket Tarp w/ Doors and Sea to Summit Net Tent Mods
Переглядів 9 тис.3 роки тому
I recently acquired a Zpacks Pocket Tarp w/ Doors, a bathtub floor, and a Sea to Summit Net Tent. This video shows some of the mods I did to make this system work better in my opinion. Hopefully you'll find it useful too.

OK, let's get the first crappy trip video out of the way. This was a trip my son and I took together in July of 2019. It was the first "mountain" bikepacking trip we've ever taken. Michigan is pretty flat by comparison. Needless to say, we were a little under prepared physically and equipment wise. Still had a good time. We're already planning the next trip. I was sick of making a line break by hand, and using a block was a pain dealing with the scale and having to trim the line afterwards, so I made this little tool to deal with both.

Went for a ride with Kyle and one of his co-workers on 2019-06-21. It was a little muddy with all the rain we've had this year. I may have fallen a few times. I accidentally shot a lot of this in slow motion so it may not be as steady as it could be. I was able to speed the footage up in the video editing software. I was just happy it makes a recording of the audio file in a separate file so I ...

Tiny Relay Chart
Переглядів 276 років тому
When using the small relays, it's difficult to show them on a panel layout with all the tags. So I made a lisp program that gathers all the tags and descriptions, sorts them from left to right or top to bottom, hides the tags, and makes a chart so the panel builder can get them laid out and know what's what.
Trim Text

Sometimes when I'm making a detail, the text is lost among the lines in the drawing. This draws a box around the text and trims anything inside the box.

We were constantly having to solder extension cables in the field for temp probes. So I made an AutoLisp program to calculate how long the extension needs to be and shows where the probes need to be in each room.

    Nice setup and video! I have the one with no doors and did some mods that made it amazing. Used it on the AT for section hikes and it went through a lot of heavy rain no problem.

    Great video. I just got back from a hike on the AT. This time I got rain with my Pocket Tarp. I didn't experience the floor extending past the tent. (I did have that happen with my SolPlex years ago, but that was because of uneven ground. My mattress slid down and pushed the tub beyond the tent. I had an inch of water!) Last night, I got splash at the vestibule. I need to work on getting the doors more tight.

      It's a tricky balancing act. Truth be told, shortly after making this video I went back to the SMD Skyscape Trekker. I'll take the 1lb weight penalty if it means I'll stay dry. Others have had success with this setup so if you can hack it more power to you.

    I see others put the bathtub floor hook end thru the tarp loops and then use the barrel toggle to pull the floor up. Seems to alleviate the floor sagging issue. My tarp and tub floor arrive soon. I’ll try it both ways and will try to remember to update this comment.

      I did not. It wouldn't be hard though. All you would need is a DCF loop sticky, some cord, and maybe a pole(s).

      Sadly I went back to the Skyscape Trekker. I gave it another shot and still ended up finding myself outside the screen in the middle of the night, or when I would wake up in the middle of night I wasn't just going right back to sleep - I was sitting up, turning on the headlamp, checking everything, making adjustments, etc. With the Trekker, if it isn't raining AND I had the outside doors open, I just fall back asleep. It's 13 oz heavier, but that piece of mind is worth it to me, and I don't think there are too many people that take weight penalties for comfort.

    Isn’t this kind of re-creating the plexamid?

    • @teddgram
      @teddgram 3 роки тому

      Yes and no. At the time, they didn't offer a Plexamid. Also, the goal was to have a double wall shelter, where the Plexamid is a single wall shelter.

  • @EspenFrafalne
    @EspenFrafalne 3 роки тому

    Im thinking of getting this shelter to use with my Hilleberg "Bivanorak", but i would probably just use a headnet instead of that big bugnet. A headnet is also really nice to have outside the shelter. Not really sure if i need a tarp with the Bivanorak though, as i read a comment from a person who just used it beneath trees with low branches to get shelter from most of the rain. I also sleep on the side, so the big hood should keep me dry.

    I have the exact same setup. I could not believe what a poor job Zpacks did on the bathtub. It's really more like an expensive groundsheet. I used this set up on the Maroon Bells Loop this summer. I also tried making some adjustments to the S2S bug net to get rid of the sagging sections. I think I might make more sense to just use a head net than the S2S but net but not totally sure. I might make some more adjustments for this summer. However, I did just buy the newest 2021 Gossamer Gear - The One. it only weights 17.7 oz for the tent and about another 4 oz for the steaks all the other pieces.

    • @teddgram
      @teddgram 3 роки тому

      I agree with you on the floor. That was pretty disappointing. I spent a few hours fussing over how to set up the tent before my first trip and thought "well, maybe I'll just figure something out in the field". Nope. The mods in this video helped, but at best it's still a hack. I'll probably go back to my Skyscape Trekker. I'll miss the fact that I lost a whole pound, but the Trekker is just so easy to set up. There's plenty of room inside that thing. Also I won't have to worry about the floor sliding around to the point that I'm now creating a funnel for the rain. They made a DCF version of it once, and from what I remember it didn't work out very well. Maybe someday down the road they'll give it another shot.

    Now defunct Oookworks put pegging points and stiffeners in each corner of their bathtub groundsheet. It works and is what zPacks should have done. They’ve spoiled their product by saving weight.
