  • Here is a look at a mock up shelter system while on the red river gorge. Using what we learned from our D.I.Y. pocket tarp video, we showcase a shelter Lysol will be using on his section hike of the Appalachian Trail.

    I'm currently working on my own, stand alone net tent, for my hexamid . I'll post pics when I'm done. Your set up looks good.

      Justin McKinney I would love to check it out! I have been kicking around the idea for making a DCF version of the SMD serenity net tent or Hexanet for a while now. What netting / floor material are you going to use?

    • @JustinMcKinneyhiker
      @JustinMcKinneyhiker 5 років тому +2

      I'm using .67oz noseeum mesh and Dyneema Composite 1.0 for the floor, with 8 inch side walls all around.@@ViscousLandan

    Will a 6'6 tall hiker fit under the pocket tarp?

      I know this comment is old but I thought I would answer it for future viewers. The consensus is it fit’s a person 5’-8” or shorter.

    nice setup, it's the large version of the bathtub ?

    For a couple more ounces, wouldn't it be worth it at this point to just use a Plexamid?

      That eliminates the modularity that he has now. No bugs, no need for the net...perfect weather, eliminate the bug net and the tub floor and only carry the cryo ground cloth. Etc., etc.

    Nice. Do you leave the bug net attached to the tarp when you pack it away?

    Love the modular setup. I’m curious how the netting has worked out. Have you made any changes or have any recommendations if you were to make it again?

      @ViscousLandan  5 років тому

      Jimmy D So far everything is working out perfectly I didn’t make a couple small changes to the bathtub floor after this trip. I leave for the AT in Couple weeks I’ll be sure to get some updated footage of the changes I made.

    Interesting in doing the door project. Would you mind sharing the dimensions of both doors? Are they symmetrical?

      MrAntnelli Yes the doors are symmetrical. Next time I have it out I’ll take some measurements.

    fun playing around but the big test will be wanting to do all the tweaking to get a good setup when you're tired and it's raining WALK 15 MILES AND NOW THERE'S A PUZZLE TO SOLVE BEFORE RAMENS

    • @ViscousLandan
      @ViscousLandan  5 років тому +2

      hermetically sealed That is the exact reason why I brought it on a trip like this first (only 6.5 miles that day) so I would have the energy to practice and play around with the setup a bit so that it will be easy when I’m tired and it’s raining. I made some changes to the cuben bathtub when I got home to more fixed length attachments for the floor. Now it’s as simple as pitch the tarp, the floor clips right in, and hook in the bug net if needed.

    I saw another video today, a guy used a Sea to Summit Nano Mosquito net in his Pocket tarp, he hung it from the peak loop and just tucked it under his sleep pad and it looked pretty slick. 2.9 oz and 52 bucks at REI. I am gonna get one of these tarps and a tub and a Sea to Summit net and pitch it with the back facing the wind and not worry about a extra long beak until it proves to be a problem without it.

    Do you think you would get this same tarp without the storm doors?

    • @ViscousLandan

      I added the storm doors myself. Didn’t really love it without them

    • @MetroOnTheMove
      @MetroOnTheMove 4 роки тому

      Viscous Landan That is what I was thinking. Seen a few examples of people using it without doors and in the snow and I just wasn’t sold. Looks like the doors would be necessary in any type of unpredictable weather.

    What weight was this setup? Inc. bug net? I am curious if all the separate parts and increased time to setup is worth it when you can just something as light as the Zpacks Plexamid V Beta (386g)?

    • @ViscousLandan
      @ViscousLandan  5 років тому +1

      If I remember right it’s around 10oz total. The extra time to set up was really only the first time I store everything together and it pitches all at once so it takes no more than a couple mins to setup now

      I do and I don’t. I am currently work on a DIY net that is A. Removable like the S2S nano but B. Symmetrical like the serenity. I will post a video when I am done with the proto type.

    • @ViscousLandan

      Thanaphan Duangmong I made the storm doors with 1.5yds. If I had it to do again I would have bought 2yds just to make is easier on myself.

    • @ViscousLandan
      @ViscousLandan  5 років тому +2

      ZELTHELD I hear ya, I was a little concerned about that too when trying to decide if I wanted to change to a more modular system from the pocket tarp and SMD serenity net. I loved the idea of having all the options. I ended up making some more changes to the bathtub floor when I got home from this trip and practiced the pitch a few more times. Now that I have it totally dialed in I leave everything hooked together when I pack it away like a normal tent but have the choice of ditching the net in winter months. Which drops the total weight from just over 10oz down to just over 8oz. Thanks for watching!
