I had this same problem with the surging on the same type motor with only 200 hours on it. Thanks this fixed my problem with the filter and gas change. It took a hole tank of 93% octane ethanol-free to get it running smooth again.

The simplest and most effective thing you can do to avoid carb trouble is to run them out of gas before storing them for winter. It sounds almost too simple but it will eliminate 90% of your headaches.

Punching the wall right now. Been screwing with my yth24v54 for 3 hours... Plugs, carb cleaner, fuel filter... Just realized today was the first time ever I put 87 octane in it. I've always used premium ethanol free because that's what I use in my old Allis Chalmers. Ill drain it tonight. Thanks for this. Ill try new has before tearing into the carb. And the carbs on these v twins suck to work on. Did it on my old husky. You have to remove a out 25 bolts just to get to it.
Use some TRU FUEL. Get that 87 out. I just finished a 330 hour review...it is running like a top. Did the blades today and grease the deck and mandrills. And let me know how it works out. Go easy on the carb there is so much nylon and plastic on that thing.

Would gum out work? I have this problem on a newer mower it only has 60 hours on it.
Sea foam additive works great also. It is heavy naphtha and raises octane. The 91 and 94 premium gas is more pure petrol. Usually corrects small engine performance. Sea foam product in your gas is good for long term storage.
I don't advise sea foam at all.

Here in Germany Gas Stations only sell 95, 98, 102 and diesel.
Usually put 95 in the mower. And 102 In my motorcycle.
The Thing is there is nearly no ethanol free gas. The 95 got 5% Ethanol in it.

Germany uses a different system to measure octane rating. 95 to you is 87 to us
Someone said it is important to keep the gas hoses straight so the line from the gas tank to the carburetor is as straight as possible. He felt if there were any, not kinks, but S shapes in the fuel lines it could cause problems. Do you agree with that mans ideas about the fuel lines being kept straight? Thank you for your help!!! I'm going to try the linkage wire with the ity bity spring wire attached, it didn't seem "up to par" to meI Figure "that's easy to try" before I go to the bother of changing (attempting) the head gasket. Dear Senior Sex Addict: (JOKE) But you do have a sense of humor. If you have a new machine or newer machine the carbs are plastic. If you have an older one....they are metal...and can use carb cleaners and and needle and you will be golden. The pLastic ones you cannot use carb cleaners as it is toxic and will damage the plastic. These plastic ones are a pain in the butt. I chose to run 93 Octane with the blue stabilizer NEW EVERY YEAR. I am running great for over 50 hours now with over 250 hours on the tractor. So just keep that in mind. You cannot use 87 or keep that gas in the tank over the winter. You have to drain and run the special mix for storage in the winter.

Guess I know why a Kohler KT725 V Twin Engine would cost $1700 to replace and the Briggs and Stratton $600 to $800 to replace the Kohler engines are much much better that's for sure

I will try this. Of course I always use 87 and I put 1 ounce (stabil) to 2 1/2 gallon gas. Wondering if I should use the 89 along with the stabil?
Use the highest octane you can use. This is what I have done since making this video. No problems at all. I avoid the stabilizer completely as it has mixed reviews and if you are putting enough gas through the season you will be fine. There is a pure gas in a can that you can run through and store sold at any good lawn mower parts store. I will have a new video on complete maintenance on this tractor, tune up, oil change, blade spindle replacement. Thanks for watching!
Might want to find ethanol-free gas. Easy to google locations. The stabilizer will work better. Not really designed to keep ethanol from fermenting and algae growth (green).
I sprayed brake cleaner in mine like a dumbass and it cleaned my carb somehow.

My Husq seat came unglued from the hard black plastic part. I used Tough as Nails construction adhesive all the way around it and smoothed it into the crack. Let it dry a week expecting it to crack and eventually come off again. 2 summers and it looks like I just put the bead around it! Glued it right back on permanently!

The difference in 87 and 89 is purely volatility. 89 is a heavier mix, and thus less prone to pre-ignition due to temperature and pressure.

I have a 15 yr old 22hp Briggs, on a JD LA145 that has 145hrs and was doing the same thing this fall. It's not to hard to remove the carb and blow out the jets. Took a couple hours maybe and there's quite a few videos on how to do it. These 2 barrel Nikki carbs are real simple, and don't have any air/fuel mixture setting to mess with afterwards. Watch a couple video before starting, always add fuel stabilizer like Seafoam especially to regular and even to premium. Up till this year only used regular with Stabil in the mower but for this winter's long hibernation I'm going to remove the regular and add premium and seafoam. I already use premium/seafoam in all my small engines, but thought the mower used enough gas/Stabil that it was OK. I think the gas in Canada refining quality has changed. Maintenance goes a long way, and the only other alternative is electric or battery and no thank you to that. I like riding more than pushing.

Use non ethanol gas and it will run better.
That Nikki V twin engine you have is not a plastic carburetor. I just worked on one for the same problem and sent it back to the customer after cleaning the jets and making sure the holes were clear in the carb. You will keep having the same problem until you correct it. Cheap fixes are not permanent.
I have taken it off twice. It is a PLASTIC CARB with a few brass insert jets...THE ENTIRE CARB IS PLASTIC! there is no metal!
So screw off!

Probably because it is. Deere puts their name and makes it green on the motor. If you look at the fuel pump from Briggs to Koehler all the same. Way it goes these days . Like washing machines lg ge all the same.
Thanks for the vid! Same issue with my 3 yr old GT52xls w/ 24hp B&S. Warranty co. (through Lowe's) had it taken to a John Deere dealer/server up the road - wants $500 to replace entire carb, clean lines, washers, etc, and of course, not covered by the warranty, since it's fuel related so my fault (pd $400 for extended 4 yr warranty). Wow. I think it's worth trying the new filter, higher octane, sea foam fix.
Check out my two newer videos. Just use the higher octane. If you gotta take the carburetor off and clean it that will do the trick as well. I found the filter new gas filter, 93 octane, new plugs, did me fine. Oil change does help as well. These motors need to be drained every 25 hours if not more if you want them to last.
I think a half cup of Acetone (the main ingredient in Gumout) would do it too.
Not with the plastic internal carb parts.
May work butttt run real fuel higher than 91.
Mine is going strong 500 plus hours now I only run the highest octane.

Add seafoam fuel treatment to the gas tank. No more surge. Don't winter your tractor with fuel in the Carb. Let it run out. Bingo!

Been sitting out with the tarp in winter with snow in the North East for over 9 years. With the battery in. 3rd one. Started right up! Like a champ! Best and TY for commenting. I think I agree with you--figure you have about 1 1/2 years of a riding mower running before it develops problems. That you had your for 5 years is exceptional. After that it's either learn to fix them yourself or give enough money to a repair shop that you might as well buy a new one--very expensive just to mow your lawn. By the way . . . surging can snap the blade belt after a few hours. I found that out the hard way.
I use one to mow the outfield grass and drag infield dirt at the school I coach for. It says it has 3043 hours of run time. I just got the coaching job this season so I have no idea if it’s rebuilt engine or accurate hours. Could one of these last that long?
@@jheezy661 Hi: I found an old guy who takes mine practically apart and gets it purring like a kitten again. The old guy's nickname is "Cotton." It was ready for the trash heap but now--thanks to him--it's going into its third year. I guess, it comes down to overhauling the thing at the beginning of every year. Tinkering with it like it's a car. As for me, my attitude is: I paid my money and I ought not to have to do that. If you can--find a local fellow and pay him $100 to each Spring go over it. My guess is whoever owns your lawnmower found one of those sorts of local guys as a doctor. Either find one or be prepared to get a new riding mower every two or three years.
I learned a long time ago to use AVIGAS. That's aviation fuel! It is 100 octane and stabile for two years minimum as required by FAA regulations. It also does not attract moisture nearly as much as pump gas. My mowers and snow machines all fire up on the first turn no matter how long they sit. Kind of like a Bc pen; "First time. Every time" FWIW

Not enough air mixing to burn the fuel. Dumping out cylinder. Check your air filter and housing. Also those damn CRITTERS...You know those Alvin chipmunk things along with field mice may have gotten in. Clean it out...Check it out. Good luck man. TY for the Vote,

IKYDK, All these ‘Box store’ garden tractors 🚜 are built on an chassis made by ‘Electrolux’! That’s right people. The old vacuum cleaner Company. The surging issue more than likely came back?! And the most likely cause… distorted o-ring’s in your Nikki 2bbl carburetor. Or cracked seam in plastic intake runner. possibly sticking solenoid located in the float bowl, (bottom of steel bowl mounted = 1st design, side of aluminum bowl 2cnd design) sticks from sitting with old gas.

Yea mines doing that but yours is slightly different than mine my battery is under the seat. But its strange when the mower deck is on it runs great , but during idle its high/low

You nailed it. I made this video seversl years ago. I now have over 430 hours. I only run 91 or higher octane or better in all my machines. No stabilizer that’s crap that is what caused my issue in the first place.
5_30w full synthetic been running that for 3=years now. Runs great.

The best thing to avoid fuel-carb problems, is to use ethanol free gas. If it's available in your area use it. Ethanol gas is horrible, for small gas, carbureted engines.

I will add Seafoam to my 89 octane and really clean the carb and fuel pump and system good I doubt a new gas tank was needed Mine Sat for over a yr and the gas got all crusted up I dont think stabill is good either
Not the tractor tank you pinhead. The gas tank gas tank. Over 400 hours now. You do you silly sea foam. I do the 93 octane. Runs great.
Remove fuel line from filte r and pour chem 12 or sea foam in line until full then run engine repeat until surging stops . If you have ethanol free fuel available use it in all your home tools and equipment it Will prevent a lot of these problems remember if it has a true carburetor than add fuel additives. Additives do not work for fuel injection.

I did the same thing, Drained all the ethanol out and bought pure fuel. For two weeks it fixed the problem. Now it's doing the same thing again. I am going to replace the carb. This is a pain. Mine has 192 hours on it. I take very good care of it. They should issue a tech bulletin on this problem. Seems common. Mine is a 24V BS.
What type of gas are you using???Octane... Use 91-93 anything lower you will get the surge. Also if not take the carb off and clean the jets with a micro drill bit or wire. The plastic inside gums up.
Would that also help on a misfire plus surging? Changed plug, have never changed filter and have stabilizer in gas. I run 93 octane in both snow blower and Husquvarna 42" tractor.
I don't run stabilizer. Caned True Gas to clean it out then 91 or higher octane. Misfire could be carb...Or Spark check the two.

I have a Husqvarna riding mower, and everyone I've talked, even support at factory and repair shop all said that regular gasoline is not good for the engine. You need to use ETHANOL FREE GAS!! Regular gas does something to the engine parts that can cause you problems in the future. Buy only ETHANOL FREE gas if you can, it's more expensive than regular gas, but you wont use it as much as you would for your car. I also put fuel conditioner/stabilizer (STABIL) in my newly filled gas tanks, 5 gal. and 2 gal. tanks. That also helps maintain your engine and preserves the quality of the gas for long term storage.
Stabilizer does nothing/\. Use 91 octane or higher. You use the ethanol free gas for storage in the winter. Run it through or store it with the EF in the tank. Too expensive to use on a daily or weekly basis. Can't believe everything you are told.
I bought a Husqvarna YTA22V46 with an automatic transmission and I'm not happy with it. The tractor started right up for the first time this spring and then into the third cut of the season it developed this revving problem you're discussing. A tree root bent a baffle that is attached to the inside of the cutting deck. From reading other forums I understand this is a common event with Husqvarnas. But the worse is the design of the automatic trans. Grass and leaves pile up on the pulleys and belts of the transmission and cause the trans not to work properly. To fix it, you have to remove the battery from under the seat and either use a blower or pressurized air to clean the debris off the pulleys and belts. I have less than 200 hours on this unit. I blow it off after every use and it's stored in a shed between use. I change the oil, filters, and plugs every year. Even babying this tractor I'm not happy with it. A cheaper Craftsman I had for 12-years was more dependable than this unit. I think after the season I'll sell the Husqvarna and get something else.
Sorry buddy but you got the cheap Husqvarna probably bought at a box store. I got mine at a dealer. You do not have a fabricated deck I do. Try not to hit tree roots...Mowing 101. You need to blow your tractor off from time to time. Considering there is a fan on the transmission that would be the place to start. I have a gas tank under my seat not a battery. Yours is in the engine compartment...great place for that.You can get an air hose with an extension on between the wheel and the deck. You get what you pay for. Older is better. You want a good Lawn tractor you need to spend a least 2500 and up. Otherwise you will get the problems you are having. Samething with my new Ariens SHO 1600 bucks Junk.
Most Craftsman mowers used Husqvarna engines. Check out the configuration on older models. Almost identical except the color of the mower and the name.
My Husqvarna surged until I tightened the carb mounting bolts. It had a tiny air leak at the gasket to the manifold.
That was your problem. These have many. It is a BRIGGS! That being the first problem.
You can check that no vacuum is generated in the gas tank, normally it usually has a breath. you can try leaving the tank lid open and start it

160 Hours one year. WTF you mow the state of Montana? What type of gas are you using octane wise?
I have a 2013, 48", 24 HP Kohler, Husqvarna with 292 hours on it, all using 87 Octane. For winter storage, the engine is run until the fuel system is dry. It started surging badly at anything but full throttle, but I found a very quick fix; CRC Throttle Body and Air Intake Cleaner. With the engine running at full throttle, I removed the air cleaner and sprayed the fluid into the intake. The engine hesitated, but recovered as I stopped spraying. Did it a second time. At a reduced throttle setting, the surging was gone! I've tried fuel system cleaner in the gas tank before and that has not stopped the surging.
CRC is worth a try!
You need 91 octane or better. That is the only thing to run in these engines. I have no problems since going to the 91 and above. I use that canned pure Gas for winter and spring. Mine has same hours and is stored under a tarp exposed to the elements...4 feet of snow ontop of her and she cranks right up in the spring. With the battery that was never removed. Screw all the gas stabilizers and cleaners. The carb inside is plastic with some brass jets and fittings. The Plastic ports get clogged from the ethanol I Have been in mine twice. Face clean out with my micro drill bits used as a port cleaner. Runs like a champ.
CRC Throttle Body and Air Intake Cleaner did not work on my 2014 YTH24V48 Briggs and Stratton.
@@derekcorreia1664 at 297 hours, after being parked for ages due to no drive, I gave mine a good service with a new carb, new ignition coil, (mice damage 😡), plugs, air filter, belts, etc, plus a new hydrostatic axle and she's run great this season.
The 89 octane is irrelevant. The detergent properties are the same for 87 and 89. Most likely, you disturbed whatever it was causing the trouble, such as a sticky governor. Try spraying penetrating oil all over the governor mechanism. Also check the idle mixture settings, they do drift a fair bit in time.
Sure it is. that is why 93 Octane is recommended. These are plastic Carburetors....The ethanol gums them up. What ever was stuck is un gunked......and has been for 65 additional hours. TY for the comments.

@@metometo7792 The higher octane takes care of the problem. I had a relapse at 260 Hours..I am in the process of making a video. It was the gas again. I screwed up and used 87 instead of 91 or better. Had to take the carb off and clean out the bowl and anit shut off! Works great.

Lucky you. Briggs and All the repair shops will tell you that 87 is a no no...I had no problems either until....... If you have an older V Twin with a metal carb...that is why yours in running fine. I had one for 22 years prior to this it ran fine too. Mine is plastic as all the new ones are...The 87 clogs them up. Period. And I did not stabilize it and left in in for the winter. Double Wamo. My fault totally.
@@skiprope536 how does an octane rating clog something up? Octane is just a measurement of the fuel's ability to resist ignition. Higher octane fuels usually come with detergents so I'm thinking that is why it runs better now. In that case save money by buying the 87 and adding your own fuel treatment.
You obviously don' t listen. the carbs are all plastic the 87 is like sugar. You need to use the highest octane on any of these type of motors. PERIOD. The stabilizer alone does not do it in 87 you need the highest octane. That is why you have have to buy the gas in a can at the end of the season to store your mower or winterize it.

Nope. You can store it in the winter with that fuel...run it dry..then put the non ethanol in. IF you have the surging it is either a tear down of the carburetor or go to 93 octane and see if that does the trick. I lucked out. I also tapped on the fuel bowl...to release some of the crap. Good Ruck!
thank you . im not entirely sure what the problem is with my mower but it seems like its not getting sufficient gas . i dont know if its the carb or what but im going to drain the fuel tank and make sure water isnt in the system

PROBLEM SOLVED ok so turns out water got into the system and all we had to do was unscrew this little bowl under the air intake and empty it and put some "sea foam" into the gas and let it run for a little bit ...
I found vacuum leak cause surging. Plastic manifold head to carb is suspect to leaks.
The red O-ring on my plastic manifold is not compressing much against the valve head.
Try adding acetone to your tank, like 28ml/1 once per gallon, these are low compression engines!
Acetone is 20 a gallon now!

Nope. It is the ethanol and the carbs are plastic. There is a second and a third video coming. I had to take it off and clean it after 80 additional hours past this video. Jets were dirty it ran great after the cleaning and still does.
I don't see how you can stand there and see this was a cheap fix. My God you spent more money than it would have took to just get the gasket to fix it in the carb. !!! Holy moly dude.
