How to fix bent pushrods in a riding lawn mower: Briggs and Stratton twin 24hp engine

- This is a step by step instructional video showing you how to fix a twin cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine in a lawn tractor that keeps bending and breaking pushrods. In this case the 24hp engine is in a Craftsman riding lawnmower, but similar engines are used in many different brands. The repair can be done by most do-it-yourselfers with common tools. The cause of this damage turns out to be a mouse nest blocking the cylinder head cooling fins. The head overheated, the valve guide then migrated out of place so that the valve was unable to close fully which bent and then broke the push rod. I'll show you how to remove the head, remove the valves, insert a set screw to hold the valve guide in place and put it all back together. Once the cooling passage are cleaned out, the problem is solved and there should be no further issues.

@@jasonselingerAwesome we just did something similar on FR651v Kawasaki bent push Rob on #1 cylinder and stuck guide had been running and cutting on one cylinder now she's firing 💯💪🏾
It’s all ways a nest of trash grass that causes this when engine overheating and guides move out, driving it back is only temporary fix

The reason the valves bend is due to bad fuel and a stuck valve/rocker arm. The impurities in the fuel creates a deposit on the exhaust valve when burned, which, over time, pushes the valve guide out of the head. This prevents the valve from operating properly and also causes the rocker arm to hit the guide, bending the valve. I repaired my B&S engine twice, before discovering that. I started using a fuel conditioner, like Lucas, and have not had an issue in since! It's been years since I've been using the fuel conditioner and I use it on all my gas engines with zero issues.

I had a Briggs that would do. This. Turns out it had a valve guide that would slide out of position.
That seems to be a common problem. Easily fixed though.

Thanks a million! Mine did the same thing - same mouse nest, same cylinder.! My pushrod bent and I was able to pull it out also. Does this cause any internal damage to the engine (other than the pushrod and valve guide)? It seems like my engine turns over a little hard by hand by turning it over with the plastic guard on top of the flywheel (with the spark plugs out). I am thinking it is harder to turn over since I am moving 2 pistons and other parts. Also, when you drove the pushrod guide back in, is it flush inside of the head? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Yup my mower broke down yesterday and took engine apart. same mouse issue you all had. Did you get your mower fixed? At 6.27 in the video he has it almost flush from the top.
