I was going to say these manufactures should really keep up with new WiFi standards (laptops are already out using WiFi 7 spec). But in reality, you should be using wired cameras for at least part of your security setup. Signal jammers are getting cheap and are becoming standard kit for a lot of break-ins. On-board storage is great for investigating after the fact, but does not help with real time notifications and monitoring.
Get a wired PoE set, even if it's connected to a cheap DVR, and have that switch or device connected to a UPS in case of power outages. These should be used as a supplement so not all of your cameras are on the same ecosystem.
The way you present complex information in such a clear and easy-to-understand manner is impressive!
Hey Paul. Big Reolink fan myself. You should also check out their wifi NVR which provides another storage option and even 24/7 recordings with some cameras. Another innovative idea from them.
When you talk about good images, sensors etc. have a look at their 2k CX410 and CX410W. The ‘W’ stands for the Wi-Fi version. I have just ‘upgraded’ two Reolink 4K IR cameras to these 2k cameras 🤷. They are mind blowing and such good value 🤯.

I went all in on Relink PoE cameras after starting just looking at doorbells. Pretty happy so far and I often get near instant notifications on presence detection. Notification sleep would be really nice to have like you said.
I bought one TrackMix camera too, which is awesome. It’s super conspicuous though, which I realized I don’t want unless someone is on my property.. probably just paint the white parts.
It did scare me for a minute on how you knew my name... but then I remembered I am already subscribed and have been for a while😀

It's good to see wireless camera manufacturers stepping up and producing good quality images and decent flood lights. On top of that, allowing for either 5GHz or 2.4GHz connections is a great plus. The only thing I'm wondering is whether, in a mesh situation where both networks have the same key, will it pick up the 2.4GHz connection if the 5GHz one just isn't reaching. (Often, I set things up inside and then go install the device.)
I also really like being able to choose keeping everything local or using the cloud, especially when the plan is so much more affordable than ring.
Thanks again for the "What's wrong with it." I'll have to say that spotty WiFi really gives me a pause, so I'll wait to see some more reviews or until future-future Paul shows up in the comments.
(By the way, you keep right on mixing intellectual properties. It's part of the fun identifying where the reference comes from. "Hey! I understood that reference!")

Love my reolink doorbell. Got the argus 3 pro ( battery powered ) it's very good too, but didn't charge properly off the solar panel. This is connected to my 5g mesh system. I had the same problem with the Wi-fi. I moved the mesh, and it was fine. 5g is sensitive to obstacles
Does it work with home assistant?
I've got a bunch of reolink Argus cameras, new and old. They ALL have the exact WiFi problems you describe. So it seems mighty unlikely that they have magically fixed this since your pre-release review model! Odd that Amazon reviews don't mention it.... I guess it has a lot of other redeeming features, and everyone assumes it's just a problem with their WiFi rather than a problem with the camera!
Paul please do a what is the best door bell camera in 2024 with the ability to put the doorbell ringer anywhere in the house. My mum needs an upgrade as her living room is in the basement going to the garden and her front door is on the 1st floor as she is retired now . What would you suggest?

Eufy Cameras have a snooze feature and I love them
My Eufy s40 solar stopped working. I disconnected it from teh network and tried to add it again and it no longer works. I think mine got damaged by both the rain and a squirl's claws scraping the solar panel. Anyways Eufy cameras aren't perfect and I don't think they are fully rain and snow/ice proof that can handle extreme changes in weather.

quick question can we paint them?
I have two of their Argus PT and one of their trackmix wireless cameras. All of them have WiFi issues. Granted they are about 100-300’ from my ubitiqui access points, which one is mounted outside for extended coverage. But they all show good signal. I have one trackmix wired power wifi camera and it doesn’t usually have this issue. The poe trackmix cameras I have don’t seem to have connectivity issues as expected. TBH I think it’s something with how Reolink power saving in the battery models work. 🤷♂️ But they still capture the event and send an alert and I seldom watch the events real time anyway. My biggest gripe with all the battery models is the startup time it takes to capture an image by the time the PIR sensor detects motion and it begins recording. I use my battery models mostly for wildlife viewing and I miss a lot of animals because the cameras don’t start recording fast enough for things running through.

@paulhibbert, do you know its IP rating? I know it say its an outdoor camera, but how outdoor? looks at best Ip 64 so tucked up under an eve?
If I remember rightly it’s not written anywhere!! I did leave it out in the rain for a day during testing, and it was fine but it wasn’t super heavy.

Thank you for an enjoyable and informative video. I have a couple of questions and if you could help I'd be grateful, I understand you are a busy dude, though! I'm having trouble getting WiFi down to my garage to use a wireless camera, and I'm using a eero mesh hub and amazon alexa. But no luck! Any tips would be helpful! Also, I just wondered if you'd ever heard of something called fancy LED
Not tried fancy LED.
For internet at a distance your only options are to get more mesh points and space them out or get Ethernet routed from the house to the garage (I had to do this as part of my office build)
You might be surprised at how cheap it is to get Ethernet out in by an electrician 😃

Paul, you didn’t comment on outdoor use (rain etc) although Amazon description states Indoor/Outdoor.. with the memory slot being open (unless there is a rubber cover? Doesn’t seem suitable for outdoor use? The solar power panel of course further implies its use for outside?
I had the same question. I am looking for another outdoor camera to put on the back of my house.
I had 2 reolink Camera's RLC-510WA. You are right no rubber cover they both died in a couple of months.

They’re definitely listed as for outdoor use, I figured they would be fine as I had a Reolink Argus outside for years with a very similar enclosure. This one did get rained on during testing and was unaffected 👍🏻
I've installed some cameras from Aqara and Reolink and it happens with some Mesh Wifi networks as for example Asus one. I've found how to fix it and it's to bind them to nearer AP. I don't know if it helps

Have you ever done a review of the effects of using a power line adapter to pass signal (essentially making it a wired connection to the camera) to see if there is any improvement? This way, you get the benefit of being wired without the hassle of running lines through walls.
I do this for one of my cameras. Works flawlessly. But I have no other devices using power line adapters. The camera is a Ubiquti G5 Bullet (so 2k resolution) recording 24/7.

Still prefer analogue cameras ,wifi is slow and poe so slow its a second behind the amalogue ones. Great if you want to see the moths leaving trails at night i suppose . Is it onviv ?

Paul, I'm an awkward customer - I always seem to want what nobody makes... I need a camera that I can watch over the network for a live view, but I also want it to take a still photo every now and then (say once an hour) and store it on a LAN server. I'm currently doing this with a fairly ancient Axis camera, which has this built in, but the resolution is pants and I want better images. Any ideas of one that will do this? If it has pan-and-tilt it would have to position it to a known location to take the photos, in case I moved it out of position when viewing and forgot to reset it. Ta!

There are Zigbee sockets but you will need a Zigbee hub or a Zigbee enabled Amazon echo.

I have an Argus 3 Pro wireless and have the issue you described with the wifi connectivty dropping. Tried everything except send it back.
Have had it for 8 months along with an argus PT. The 3 Pro drops out and the PT does not.
Weird! I have been wondering if I have a duplicate IP issue but haven;t found the time yet to go through my endless list of wifi devices and check to see what's going on
@@paulhibbert Like you I am running a mesh wifi and I cant see a difference in the signal strength between the front and back locations for the cameras. last night I tried to connect to the camera no success. The wife came home about an hour later and bing I got the notification.
If you find out a resolution would appreciate hearing it.
Also agree with you the pause on the notfication would be nice.

It’s not listed anywhere annoyingly. It got rained on during testing, but not for a prolonged period so difficult to vouch for it in that regard, though my old Reolink camera was outside for years
I have Wireless Reolink cameras, where I have a decent WiFi 6 mesh network. unfortunately have the same problem.
Wonder what the issue is! I’ve seen others I. The comments saying they have this camera and have no issues. Bizarre!

Yep. 1080P which is supposed to be high definition is really standard definition in terms of picture quality. I have long since given up assuming that the manufacturers claims are anywhere close to the quality they say they provide. The Reolink is nearer HD but it still isn't 4K in y opinion, UHD images are pretty stunning done properly.
This is the best I’ve seen so far in a security camera. I think they’re all trying to balance storage size and quality and the results are still nowhere near the quality of a mobile phone camera as a consequence
Last time I drilled a hole in the wall, all the lights went off. I only wanted a shelf.
Every time I drill a wall it’s terrifying. Installing new light fixtures that needed new holes in the walls was the worst. You know the cables are there somewhere 😬
WPA settings perhaps?
It seems to be more of a range issue, as soon as I took it out of range it struggled to get back on and needed resetting. I changed my Wifi channel and that seemed to help for a while and then it started struggling again. It was very weird, and felt like a duplicate IP issue. I do wonder if that's exactly what it was. Reolink assure me it's because I have an early version, and the amazon reviews look fine, so I'm reasonably convinced it was either my problem on my network, or because like they said, it was no the public release.
If you make a small hat for the camera it will look like James Earl Jones from Coming to America

It was uploaded weeks ago, but only just released. UA-cam rather ridiculously puts unlisted videos in playlists on my main page 😂
Although picture quality is an important feature for cameras, the software for searching through footage is critical too. So the video could with more info on that aspect.
I can’t really see the advantage of saving recordings to a camera that is likely to be stolen.
I’ve stuck with Arlo over the years and the software is great for searching for an event. Picture quality is good too. Yes it needs a subscription but that ensures that when they nick my camera I don’t lose the recording. Their latest camera annoyingly doesn’t support Apple home or Home Assistant yet.
