My mother in law is one of those "let me know when you get home" and totally does freak out when we forget. So I made a Home Assistant automation that utilizes the Gmail integration and it "emails" her number when we make it home after leaving her house, which shows up on her end as a text. This way, I don't have to have the HA Companion app running on her phone.

Similar to your "Neesha has arrived safely at work" automation, I've created Zones in Home Assistant for each of the hospitals in our city. Each member of our family has the Companion app on their phone, so I've created an automation that will alert us if someone enters one of those zones and stays for longer than 7 minutes (eliminates false positives if someone happens to drive past a hospital). I should mention that our children are all of driving age, so the fear is real. 😆

I got the geofencing notifications for me and my wife as well. We both receive a home assistant notification whenever we enter/leave home, our works and some other frequent visits. It saves us from separately sharing location or send a message we arrive.
Also, I've got a small overhead light right outside the entrance door. I have it set up to turn on whenever my wife or I arrive home after dark so we can open the door inside. It will turn off after the door has been closed for 5min. This light also turns on whenever we pass through the inside motion sensor and open the door in the nighttime. This serves to properly close home and to welcome guest into our home.
Next, we have a couple of automations that will turn on a small indoor water fountain from 7am to 11pm, only if either or both of us is home. If we both happen to leave home in this time slot, the fountain will turn off... And will turn on again when we arrive and open the front door (only if isn't past 11pm).
Finally, we leave our cat a small bulb that will only turn on when nobody's at home and is nighttime, and will turn off whenever we arrive home.
Big wall of text here, but I do love sharing my smart home automations!

Paul here's one you might like, when my front door is opened within x-minutes of me returning home, Alexa greets me, gives me some updates on the house (like thermostat and robot vacuum last activity) and then asks "would you like me to get the PS5 ready for you?". If I say yes, Home Assistant switches on the PS5, the TV backlighting, IR candles and changes the TV to the right input. If I ignore or say no nothing happens. I did this using the Alexa Actionable notifications.
I've also used the same method to have Alexa heat up water in an electric kettle for tea. Makes the house feel like it's really "smart"

"I've made loads of really cool automations over the years.": Aside from the platform fan-boys who absolutely _must_ tell you what platform they're using and why you should be using it too, this is perhaps the most common way that home automation enthusiasts can cause their friends, relatives, and people standing in the grocery check-out to glaze over in the eyes and try to find some way of being anywhere else.
I'm not sure it's a full solution but I restrict myself to mentioning or showing one automation to folks who, for some reason I can't fathom are rather uninterested in home automation. It helps if they're the ones who bring it up.
On the other hand, the folks that are here are already interested in home automation (unless, of course, they're here for head's exploding and doing things on the fly.) So, they've tacitly given you permission to turn on the deluge of automation ideas.
Your videos often give me ideas of what I'd like to buy, but this one gave me ideas of automations I would find useful and could do myself. (So, mission accomplished. Good work.)
    I have a set of automations that I'll mention that's about mid-level:
It's for lighting the back porch/deck. The standard operation is to turn the deck light on when motion is sensed and turn it off after there's no motion for two minutes, but only if it's between dusk and dawn. However, sometimes we sit outside on the deck, and I'd like the lights to stay on. So, I have a virtual switch that determines whether motion or lack thereof will switch the light. I've added one more automation that switches off the lights and turns motion triggering on at 11:30 pm in case I forget to turn the lights off or turn motion sensing back on.
Presence sensing with notifications: I do this too for the same reasons you mentioned. Home assistant lets you set up "zones," each with a location. I have an automation that lets my wife and I know when we arrive at and leave several common locations. This information also shows up on the dashboard so we can see where the other is at a glance. (It's sort of like Mama Wheazley's clock.)
Thanks again for some neat automation ideas. I'd like to see more of that.

Love the videos Paul. Always great info. I’d be interested in the automation systems you use for outdoor lighting. You turned me on to the Aqara system from Hue and the routines work flawlessly, but not sure if their P1 is IP rated. A single eco system is also the way forward in my view especially when you take into account Alexa routines only work 2% of the time and I have no interest in home assistance. So a single ecosystem for outdoor motion that enables lights and opening doors to turn lights on would be amazing

I'm most proud of automating keeping my girls in their room at night unless they need to go potty. Yes this has been one thing added on top of another.
First I started with a smart switch for their lights making it turn off if turned on between specific times. They found out that they could just have the light on before that time so they started going to bed early so they could stay up (you will find a lot of these are cat and mouse).
I then turned off the lights at a specific time and that worked for a while until they found a race condition when they turned the lights on and off quickly enough the lights wouldn't have enough time to respond and would see that the lights were off when they were on.
I then added a routine to check if the lights were on or off and turn them off if they are on. They of course found out it was easier to just set the switch to setup mode.
I then setup a routine to check if the switch was online and if it wasn't check if another switch on the same circuit was online and if it was turn off the power at the circuit breaker. I then set up a routine of the breaker if off in the morning turn it on. They started getting up and going to the bathroom and turning the lights on and playing in the bathroom.
I then setup the bathroom so the light only stays on for 10 minutes then turns on the fan for 5 minutes then turns the fan off (this happened throughout the day as well which helped save on electricity and water and paid for itself). I then setup the light so if it was offline it would be turned off at the circuit and the circuit would also be turned on in the morning. I also realized they were coming out into the main room to get items to play with so I put up a camera that can detect people. If a person comes into the main room through one zone and enters another zone then the camera will play a recording of me telling them to go back to their room. If the person is still there after a minute or moved into another room it will again tell them to go to bed and start counting down from 5 to 0. If it gets to 0 and someone is still visible on any cameras an announcement is made that we need to go handle putting the kids back to bed. Before they could figure out that not looking like a person would circumvent this i got a presence sensor that does the same thing and they haven't figured out how to defeat this one ... Yet

I’ve a notification saying “inbox me hun” when attending hospital, much saner than a Facebook post about it and probably more authentic in its care.
I am also playing around with NFC stickers on cards to load up audiobooks for the kids to listen to - removes the issues of shouting at Siri/whoever and also means youngest can identify the book he wants by sight of the cover. The biggest pain is wishing I could more easily play to the right speaker depending on what device scanned the NFC instead of always outputting to the same default speaker. It can probably be done so I’m considering this a PEBKAC error for now.
My best and most used automation is the morning routine that turns relevant lights on and then boils the kettle for me when my regular alarm goes off, or will also trigger if I turn my phone off sleep/do not disturb within 3 hours of the regular alarm time anyway so I always start the day with a brew ready by the time I am out of bed

On the idea with the door video feed going directly to the TV, could you not introduce a presence sensor in your lounge to detect if you were watching TV or not and use that to decide if you turn TV off or resume the program you were watching previously?

My go to smart home recommendation for people early in their journey is always using motion sensors to turn on dim or low-level lighting at night as people move around the house. For example, if a child gets up from bed to go to the bathroom, have the lights come on at one percent for two minutes.

Or am I missing something?

I really love my chosen way of implementing my home entertainment being referred to as the "last resort" "quite complicated". LOL
I know I can do it, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Smart home stuff....so many things I haven't gotten around to.
Family defeating smart home stuff is like a super power...they find the easiest way to disable it every time. And yes, I like to think it's done in nefarious ways too :P
Like turning the dimmer off on our main living room light instead of pressing the smart button to turn it off.
Or locking the bottom lock on the smart lock in our mudroom...making it impossible to get into the house briefly when my dad fell in said mudroom. It's honestly a little different dealing with smart home stuff when said family member actually can't remember that something has been setup in a specific way. My dad has dementia, so remembering that the button turns it off but there's still the dimmer on the light....is a bit out of his grasp at times. Keeping things super simple for him is top of my priority list.
That said, smart home tech has actually stepped up to help me take care of him better.

Not sure if you read comments on historic videos(?) but I wonder if you could help with a specific scenario that I'm looking at.. I'm trying to find a simple push button that can send a notification or email to a remote mobile device or email account whenever it is pushed. The challenge is that 1. It must be idiot proof to use. 2. There is no power at the button's location (although it may be able to tap into a nearby 4g or WiFi signal). 3. It cannot rely on a local hub of any sort as there is nowhere to power a hub. 4. It cannot rely on the button-pushers own phone or that any other phone will be nearby... Can you think of anything that might suit such a specific scenario? TIA 😊

  • @elan_vital87
    @elan_vital87 4 місяці тому +1

Hey Paul, great video, love your channel. Maybe a little improvement suggestion for your video-doorbell-automation: You might want to start your routine with a virtual switch, instead of the doorbell itself. With that, you would have the advancement, that you could implement a required expression, when the switch can or can't be turned on. So in the end, you would have to split your one routine into two separate routines but with the advancement, that your TV neither turns on, when you're away nor turns off, when you are watching a movie.
The two automations could look like this:
No. 1 (doorbell turns on switch):
    Required expression: Anyone is home
    Trigger: Doorbell is pressed
    Action: Virtual switch turns on
After 2 minutes, virtual switch turns off
No. 2 (virtual switch starts Alexa routine)
    Trigger: Virtual switch turns on
Action: Alexa shows doorbell feed on TV
At least that's how I would solve that, using my Hubitat. If that's total bullocks for home assistant, just ignore me. 😅
Anyway, greetings from good old Germany. 😇

    • @AndrewJonesMcGuire
      @AndrewJonesMcGuire 4 місяці тому +2

Oh no it's even easier with Home Assistant, in a single automation. You have conditions to prevent the automation running - eg as you suggested, require that there is someone home. But then you can capture the state of the TV first, do all the loading the camera feed thing, and then after the 2 minutes, you only turn the TV off, if the TV was already off - based on the variable of the TV state you captured right at the start. I'd probably have a second condition, that my phone is not in Do Not Disturb mode. Because sometimes - I don't care who is at the door, if I have a plan to watch a movie or something, I'm going to watch it, I don't want to be interrupted by someone at the door.

    • @elan_vital87

Thanks gents! Both great solutions. My video was specifically about the ‘everyman’ being able to achieve it with Alexa, but these are great for home assistant and Hubitat. I also need to look into using my presence sensors so the tv comes on in the room I’m in, all solvable with a bit of time and effort!

    • @wdhawkins
      @wdhawkins 4 місяці тому

It is possible to hack "only if" logic into Alexa routines by using routines to enable and disable other routines. For the "everyman" automator I would suggest an Alexa routine that replicates an "away mode" and another routine to replicate an "at home mode" by enabling and disabling relevant routines as you leave and return home. This can be done with routines that include a series of actions such as powering devices on or off and enabling and disabling other routines (including a doorbell stream to TV routine) as appropriate through repeated use of the "Customised" action within the routines. As Alexa in the UK lacks geofencing support, I have opted for a Flic button at my front door with a single press to trigger the "away mode" and a double press to trigger the "at home mode". In my setup, these two routines enable or disable a dozen or so other routines depending on whether I'm leaving home or returning. To provide redundancy, I have replicated these routines to ones using alternative triggers including voice or motion depending on the scenario. And yes, I do sleep with a lady!

So we have an Alexa routine that turns their night lights on at sunset and off 30 min before sunrise.. all simple. HOWEVER we don’t have the kids all the time (blended family). So some days we have rooms lit up with no one in there! Is there a way of disabling Alexa routines based on events in a Hotmail calendar.. when we have the kids, enable the routine, when we don’t disable it.. if that’s possible that would really be a smart home 👍

Created one for the baby when he goes to sleeps - we tell Alexa to look after the baby - this toggles an unused aqara switch in the house that in turn activates motion sensing on Aqara camera through Aqara app. Then the number of motion toggles in the Aqara camera starts getting counted up through a home assistant virtual counter and when a certain number is reached HA tells Alexa to show the camera on Alexa devices and say baby is moving and go and check. If baby moves only briefly and goes back to sleep HA resets the counter and start watching again. When Alexa is told to stop watching over the baby - the entire automation shuts down. Got a decent wife approval factor by this. 😃

I have considered doing the TV - doorbell link (using Google as i backed the wrong horse in the early days 🙄) as it is quite the faff to pull out and open your phone to check who's there when the bell rings. However as i don't want every TV in the house turning on and showing the Nest image, i'd have to figure out some sort of proximity sensor so that only the TV in the room I'm in powers on.
Given how the increasingly senile Google Home now seems to struggle with even simple tasks like turning lights on and off and playing music, i'm not especially eager to start tinkering with it. Wish Google would either fix their very broken ecosystem or kill it off properly, fortunately most of my smart home kit is cheap Tuya stuff so transitioning to Alexa would only involve replacing my Google speakers and Nest thermostat.
