Protect Tommy at ALL COSTS. Man, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a This Old House clip more than this one. Tom Silva is the definition of a Grandpa, the kind who can literally build you anything, let you help out and teach you with patience and care. Thanks, Tommy!
World needs more men like this. Everything has become so automated and that's fine but where's the pride? Taking an afternoon to build something with your hands or for a family member or neighbor is pure. Thanks to all you guys, norm, Bob for helping my interest at 16. Much love
@@clausdicovskiy1350 But when there is a lump of dough in the middle and you push down on the ends, that would put quite a bit of bending force on it, don't you think?
@@ianbutler1983 yeah I guess, but I can’t imagine it being anywhere near the force required to damage the joint. But maybe I’m wrong. I guess Kevin’s wife will find out! Lol
It's end-grain to side grain so not as bad as end grain to end grain. You can also strengthen end grain joints with two applications of wood glue. The first will get sucked up by the grain, the second will create a stronger bond.
Oh man. Its just like bringing ur boy for his first day of karate class. He is so determined to earn himself a fancy belt he can show off. I may cay a bit....
Does everybody have to know everything? If you knew the show, you would know that the tall guy Kevin was once someone who called this old house and was on an episode before becoming the host.

And that's a great explanation of "being in the right place at the right time". I am sure he scored some serious points with his wife thanks to Tommy!
Love these "Build It" episodes - you can tell that they work well together and genuine like each other - TEAM !!!
They show respect for one anothers talents on each episode.
Please do so also, Thank you.💖
Tom Silva is a great teacher just like Norm Abram. Love these build it segments
Your rolling pin is not for dough but for museum. It was a compliment. Thanks!
***Wow you made a big cigar*** :)
Hi TOH , that's a beautiful rolling pin , nice job Tommy & Kevin , I'll bet Kevin's wife likes it too !!! 👍😊❤
Not sure if it’s because I just finished my second beer but this was really sweet, heartwarming, and cathartic.
Yup, pretty sure that's the beer talking! ;-)
The craftsmanship is impressive; the ethos and humanity even more so
Lathe work can be addictive!
A seriously gorgeous rolling pin 😊
Tom is a master craftsman!
Lucky Kathleen 😉🥰
Work of art
Very nice, the design came out really nice!
Nice. Going out to the shop now to make one. Thanks for sharing.
I love that bolillo.
Every guy if possible should make one for his sweetheart. ⚘❤⚘

Very nice rolling pin 👍👍😎😎👍👍
Excuse me, I can't wait any longer. I HAVE to roll some dough. Pie anyone ?
Sometimes I burnish and polish with a handful of the shavings with the lathe at a higher speed
LOOKS LIKE A BIG JOINT
whaaaat?
Kinda surprised Tom didn t star the intersecting joint of the ornate detail. 😁
Cute overalls
Is CarHartt sending a check?
More or less End-grain glue joint on a long thin item? Isn't that a weak joint?
I mean it would be if it's under any sort of stress. But it's just a rolling pin.

Aww Tommy is so nice. He made Kevin's wife a new behavioral tool to keep Kevin in line.
4:13 How to completely roll your sleeves down and button them up in 2.5 seconds.😂🤣😂
Tommy and Kevin in their coveralls = yummy, yummy man-lovin’.
Now send the latter one to ATK
Twommy!
I'm like... Easy project. Just a basic turn on the lathe. Beginner stuff. Then Tommy busts out the X. 😂
Well, putting the X in there was easier than using a lathe, which is far from beginner stuff.
Rest easy Tommy😪
Rest Easy? The guys not dead.... Or do you mean he should go grab a beer and relax on his Lay Z Boy for a few after the rolling pin job?
@@waltkosch yes he should looks tired
Therapeutic. 😌
I love your baseball bat builds on Instagram
First thing my instructor taught me as an apprentice is roll up your sleeves when using lathe or any rotating tool
Looks nice, but typically end grain glue joints are considered week, but I’m guessing baking isn’t to aggressive.

I want to come back as Tommy 👼

3:31 Tommy should know never to hit the spur drive with a metal hammer. Always use a wooden hammer or mallet.
Looks nice with that detail in it but in 6 years when that glue breaks down it with be its failure point or if you drop it.

What they don't tell you is that Kevin is married to Tommy's daughter.
(not true... probably)
does it come with a white flag?

It's his job to ask all of the questions that are in the minds of viewers, even the simple ones.
Cool project, but skip the toxic glue on food contact surfaces.
Wood glue is not toxic. Tight bond 2 and 3 are completely fine on food contact surfaces
