You just say it how it is , obviously your opinion but the experience & knowledge you’ve gained over the decades is unrivalled… love your channel matey 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Great video. After 40 years of detecting, I got burned out after going through several arm surgeries. I sold my 600 and 800 and kept my legend and my XP ORX . I just got back into detecting, and the legend is a great machine. I did the 1.15 update, and it's probably one of the best coin machines I've ever had. Keep up the great videos !
Enjoy your video’s . At 81 years old I have ordered a legend. I have two Bounty Hunters. Have not detected for a long time. Since I moved to Estero, Fla, it seemed like it would be a good hobby.
Pass those bounty hunters along if you aren't using them. I'm sure that some kids would love them. I just posted on freecycle and trashnothing looking for some until I decide and come up with the money for a new one.
That’s why I love your videos. You show us how one learns. You’re not afraid to show mistakes on video. I’m watching lots trying to figure out which one to start with. Leaning towards the Manticore (really liking the navigation on screen- seems intuitive) but checking all options. Great job!!
My legend still hasn’t come in yet. 3 weeks ago I was positive I was gonna cancel my order for it. After watching you and a few others on the testing of it I’m feeling a lot better that I didn’t cancel. I’m waiting on the Pro pack. Keep up the realistic testing!
An Australian detectorist using the Legend said he detects parallel to the water rather than detecting up and down the beach. He does this to avoid the Legend having to continually change between wet sand and dry sand
I went to the legend rather then the nox I also own a simplex but ml price and coil issues drove me away and I wanted something. Different and I’m really happy with my purchase awesome machine
Treasure Outdoors was finding tiny objects with his. I started detecting in the 70s with one of those 20 pounder detectors so these modern machines make me feel like I`m having LSD flashbacks.
To test finding small gold, put a small gold earring or other small gold item in a plastic bag, bury it in the wet sand and see if the Legend finds it. Just a suggestion. looking forward to more tests.
Tie a golden ring to a thick fishing line and bury it to test on the beach . If you are ready just pull. Of course make a good knot and tie the other end of the line to a piece of wood or plastic so that you can't loose the fishing line because they are transparent.
I LOVE my 2 SIMPLEX more then ANYTHING... THE SNIPER COIL IMO IS EVERYTHING.... I CAN'T WAIT TO OWN MY LEGEND SOON... I'M SO BIAS... THE SIMPLEX IMO WITH SNIPER COIL IS KING... LEGEND INCOMING...
Hi. I'm Alessandro from Italy. If you like to search in salt water and have a really stable metal,You have to buy a 19th metal detector called Minelab Excalibur2. After that you won’t use the other 18 anymore. Greetings and congratulations on your great videos.
They did say this wasn’t a plug and play like the Simplex and not doing your homework before hitting the beach was a bummer. But the more you use the more I’ll watch. Love your videos and now that you have The Legend I’ll be watching out for your videos.
Thank you for going through the testing process and then making it interesting to watch. Your videos teach without putting us to sleep giving us the ability to go out with our new time machines with some understanding on how to travel back in time. Thanks M.
A good trick that i learned with the simplex, is to manually ground balance on beach mode to zero. And than put the setting on park mode 2! Also lower the sensitivity 25% +/-. Again this counts for the Nokta Makro Simplex+. Maybe this also works for the Legend.....?
I am going to wait till the end of summer this year to see all the reviews before I decide to get or not. I want to see how it performs fully submerged in the ocean. I have the equinox 600 currently and I love it. But yeah I am defiantly going to see the reviews on this machine at the end of summer and decide from there weather or not to get it.
Always great videos and info. I started using my Minelab Safari and learning the tones with good results but Safari is not waterproof so after watching this video Legend is on my list!!!!! Thanks!!!
I appreciate everything you’ve done to teach us about this metal detector and showing the steps for your thought process trying to get it working. It’s my honest opinion though, that any metal detector, especially one somewhat marketed towards a beginner group, that requires a bunch of setting tweaks and serious research into its inner functions (especially for a detecting veteran like you) just to use it accurately, is a bad product. I understand Nokta is about saving money on a competitive product, but if the extra money I spend on a different brand gets it to actually work correctly out of the box, I’ll say it’s money well spent. Do better, Nokta.
I'd love to see a Legend video with the LG30 coil. Beach and or inland. I've heard that it fixes target separation issues of the stock coil and the target ID I know is also good.
I've found 2ft coppers with my SNIPER COIL SIMPLEX... I CHALLENGE EVERYONE!!!! I'm ordering the LEGEND ASAP... Again... My SIMPLEX with SNIPER COIL... It is the LOVE of my life..... JS
I found a small charm( pencil eraser diameter) with the legend 3” below mulch. It had a strong VDI of 28. Maybe gold range considering vdi, but could not find any marks to confirm. I think with more use, we all will see what it’s potential is. I have also been using a nox 600, and found , other than menu, to be an easy switch. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you! I've been waiting for your first thoughts. I trust your reviews more than anyone's I've found on YT so far (Not throwing shade at the dealers, but it's nice to hear from someone that's not trying to sell me one). I bet with the 44 Mhz frequency used for the goldfield setting they could come up with something pretty spectacular for small gold. I am split between this and a dedicated gold detector (GM 1000/ GS 2000/Goldbug 2 or something similar) . I will mostly use it for small gold in highly mineralized soil (prospecting) but it would be nice to have one machine that did both. I think this has the at least the possibility to be better than the gold bug or gold Kruzer because it runs multi freq in goldfield mode including the 44Mhz which near what the others use single freq.. so you might not have to give up bigger deep gold to pick up small shallow pieces. Very excited to see what you have coming!
Merrill, you are undoubtedly the most enjoyable detectorist on the net. Even with your stumbles your review is helpful and very informative. Just one caution; regarding the small targets, the lack of evidence shouldn't be interpreted as a potential short coming of the machine. It would be easy to drop an ear ring into a 12" deep hole while you're at the beach and take a swing over it... Scientists don't try to analyze a lack of data.
Yeah Merrill, what's wrong with you"? Just kidding Merrill. You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time. Here's a really great video, and someone has to chime in with a negative? People?
I had Nokta Legend. My opinion is that it is a good detector, with an excellent ratio of invested and received. Let's call it the first "serious detector for beginners". But you have to be honest and say that there is a lot where Legend can still improve. They are still far from being able to match the Equinox 800. Nokta is creative, and I believe that they will release something good on the market soon, but for now they are too busy with cheap detectors.
I am big on digging the small targets. I don’t see the advantage over the Nox. I’ll stick with the 600. Target I’d is not that important as target separation
In tomorrows video I am going to be testing the target separation by matching signals with Phil the Nox. Separation is impossible to do justice on on the beach but we will take a deep dive tomorrow. As you know I love my Nox, but the Legend is legit also. For small targets (so far at least) Nox all day.
Thanks again for the lesson. I feel I learn something new every time you show what to do. Thanks Merrill! I'm very new at this and you are making it more enjoyable. I'm starting to find thing.
Great first video with the Legend. To me VDI's are important but in no way a deal breaker. The Legend not being consistent with it's VDI's will be rectified I'm sure in an update. Having to basically detune the Legend in the wet will cause a lot of necklaces to be missed. As well as small gold jewelry as you pointed out. Hopefully updates will correct most of its current shortcomings. Which it appears there aren't many. Keep up the great work and come on people 1000 likes. We need to help get Merrill's new toy paid off before the next one shows up.
I half-stepped my Nokta Legend purchase. I cancelled my order almost immeditely after I placed it when I learned later that days one of my detector friend’s Legend had to go back for a speaker repair. That caused me to do a google search and I was shocked at all the falure reports it came up with. So Icancelled my order as I didn’t want to have a new machine that I would need to send back in to fix an already known flaw. I say flaw becuase of all of the reports out there of failed spekers. Since then, I became hooked on wireless capability of the Remote Head, WS6 puck XP and coild that XP employs. So basically, I am staying with XP.
Merrill, I struggle with sub menus with the legend, but know it’s a great machine, especially for the money, the best. Lots of guys like Gigmaster love his Legend, guess you got it worked out by now?
No offense taken at all and I appreciate the question. I find that to be a waste of time on a beach (or a park really). I slow down and grid when I get a patch on a beach or a good find in a park
Place a nickel at 10" to 12" in the soaking wet sand, ensure stability and compare it to your other machines including minelabs at max stable sensitivities, this will be the real test as well as small gold.
merill there is an issue with the detector calling small gold like earings charms and chains it calls it iron you need to move your first tone break down to like 3 its factory set at 11 you might dig some more iron but at least not leaving gold good luck
I would test some small gold at home before you hunt. We can already see from other videos that the stock iron tone break is a little too high for some small gold, so it will ring in as iron and give an iron tone if you don't lower the tone break by a couple notches. You'll also probably have to run M2 which is weighted for lower conductors, using higher frequencies as well. Maybe gold mode would be cool to try as well if it will run stable enough. I see people pulling gold but not small gold yet. The machine is new though so who knows. I feel like the M1 and M2 features need to be modified in beach mode. Nobody hunts the beach for ONLY high conductors or ONLY lower conductors. You want it all, jewelry comes in both varieties. So I don't agree with their programing choice for beach mode. As for the varying ID, I know older machines had a depth ID setting where deeper targets would be up averaged. I wonder if that's what's going on, when it comes to your ID changing in and out of the ground. Personally I don't care, once I dig a target it it's dug, what it rings up out of the ground is irrelevant but I DO want to dig it if its a good target.
My 2 detectors are Nokta makro man. I'm sticking with the brand. been super happy with both. Simplex for general and the Gold Kruzer for my prospecting. I was thinking Vanquish 540 pro pack for my beach detector, but I think now I going to spend 135 more and get the legend with stock and 6inch coil. Appreciate your videos and unbiased opinions. High plains have the stimulus package for 635 includes the 6inch. that's hard to beat man.
Thanks Merrill... yep, if you get excited then so should we!! I hope to be able to add this machine to my already capable Simplex... which incidently, I got after all your positive usage reviews!! Happy days ahead!!
Yes if dilek or and company gets offended by opinions, I guess we must understand this how much did they intend to put in the unit price point , updates etc. that’s why new models come out little improvements I’m guessing, you tell me
Still deciding on whether to get the NoX 600 or the Legend. I will be hunting primarily in the wet sand and underwater snorkeling. Been using the Nokta Pulse dive for 1 year now and limited to 6" for gold rings. If I do get the Nox I will have to Silicone everything. Tough decision
Merrill, I have a request. There seems to be a rather vocal group of hunters who are pushing using The Legend inland in single frequency only. Their pitch is that multi is too noisy and lacks depth. To me this seems to defeat the purpose of multi-frequency. Assuming you have installed the latest update, how about taking The Legend to your trashy NY park and trying both single and multi? Maybe it's due to your being a teacher, but you have a different approach and mindset when it comes to these sort of comparisons and I think a lot of people would like to know your thoughts on the subject. Bill
Gosh Merrill, another great video. You talk about small stuff, well once in the dry sand, I dug a sewing needle, and like an idiot, I put it in my pouch. Well, a while later I wanted to look at something in my pouch, and when I stuck my hand in, ouch, I pulled my hand out really quick, and the needle went flying. Well, a couple passes later, (fifteen minutes) maybe fifteen feet over, I got another target and guess what, I found that same needle. This time I went straight for a trash can and disposed of it. I was using my NOX 800 and it was a small needle. Maybe a quarter size (75%) smaller than a hairpin. It was tiny.
You are the first beach video using the Legend I have seen. It was enjoyable watching you work through learning the Legend. It would be interesting to compare the Nox and the Legend on the same target to see how they both do, but it would need a buddy to help! The Legend is so far holding its own! I am wondering what MineLab is working on with the Legend and Deus II.
Everything I’ve seen says the same, that it’s very close to the Equinox. As soil gets hotter though, the Equinox begins to take a tiny bit back. To me, it’s too close for me to switch from equinox to Legend. I have my eye more on Deus 2 and will be receiving mine in the next batch.
I think that is wise. Some detectorists who have swung the Nox have put it down for the Deus. Dollar for Dollar....for a NEW user.....you might get more with a Legend than a Nox....(I cant believe I just wrote that)
Love your videos , I have been using the garrett 400 and just couldn't get in sync with wet beach . just Got bought the Legand today , very informative video Thanks ,Michael K. Suffolk Cty. NY , the beaches were packed Sunday R Moses can't wait to get my Legend.. Thanks again !!
Do you ever go to Jones Beach detecting? I have never been to NY but I heard of Jones Beach in an old 1930s William Powell movie as well as Carly Simon mentions that she wrote "anticipation" while visiting the beach in 71' ..I know a useless piece of information my magnificent magnifying mind retains.
Guess if I get the Legend, I wont be finding those target ID of 90 (Quarters) #1 Do you think its a drawback to only have a target ID of 1-60 vs the Simplex 1-99 ? #2 Now that you have used the Legend for a while,(and with firmware updates) does it recover small gold objects similarly to the Equinox ? I'm ready to upgrade.
I love settings. I did an entire club hunt yesterday on Beach 2...YAY, me. But I did find plenty of stuff. Met someone who says they'll be hunting with you in Florida in the near future. I might have to see if I can get invited on that trip if you didn't mind. ;-) It would be so awesome to actually meet my MOST favorite metal detecting UA-camr.
When you talk about gold with the NOX are we talking the same size coil as the legend? Or were the NOX small finds with the smaller coil? Are we also talking what the NOX found in several years compared to a couple of weeks that the Legend has been available? Saying tons of stuff has been found by a machine that has been out for many years compared to a detector released a week ago isn't realistic. Legend small coil is now shipping, Comparing 6" with 6" would be helpful.
The only way to compare detectors is to run over the same target with both detectors, and switch witch detector you use first. Just because one can find what the other did doesn't mean it would happen the other way around. If the better machine was always used after the other, it should find everything. Maybe using the better detector first would give different results.
Thx Merrill great video. Appreciate your time and wisdom. I have not pulled the trigger to get the legend yet but I might just to try something different. Love my Nox. Jim
Man I love these videos. I'm hoping to pull the trigger on a detector this year...simplex is in the price range... Just wondering if you could possibly do a video on pin pointers... Do I need to spend a lot or do you get what you pay for?? Thank you for what you do👍
Ive always gone Garrett with the pinpointers. The pinpointers are the industry standard.....Their detectors themselves have fallen behind..... Thank you for the kind words Jeff. I can only afford to do the detectors now with the modest revenue I get from UA-cam, but I hope to branch out to pinpointers someday.
You get what you pay for, buy within your realistic projected use and budget. If your on a budget you have to buy the best bang for your buck imo simplex+ is just that under 600 basically! Equinox is my go to but I see many dont jive with it many do. It's a machine if you fight it you'll be disappointed and many imo fight the machine waaaaay to much so. Simplex has many coils to gain ground on pricey units, fast "most important thing in the biz" and simpl-ex and ALL machines will find treasure if you swing where treasure exist period! Location and paying attention is of upmost importance.
The GARRETT PRO-POINTER AT is widely used and won't let you down. Waterproof and rugged. It is the one Merrill is using. I am not sure how good the Nokta pin pointer is (you need to check reviews) but if you are getting a Nokta detector you might find a deal combining a detector/pinpointer.
Thanks for the testing. Now I have the anfibio and it's a great machine. Thought about getting the legend but I decided to keep my anfibio. Love the kr 24 coil which I also had on my simplex. Happy hunting....
Found your review video on the Legend. I have the Nox 800 and relic and beach hunt with it and it does great! Should I purchase this machine for mostly relic or beach hunting. I am mostly a relic hunter you may have seen. Thanks Merrill.
The honest answer regarding relic hunting is I don’t know. I am so locked in on coins and jewelry!!!! I’ve gone all metal but I’ve never fully explored that end of the metal detecting spectrum!
Nice intro....I would love love to see some air tests on a table with some small gold pieces and playing with the saltwater option chatter in the pinpoint settings
Been detecting here in Australia, about 6 years now, had probably 6 different types of detectors, at the moment I have one , noctra anfibio multi , but seriously looking at xp range , hi from au , happy hunting,
I just bought nox 800 , DEUS 2 and legend a simplex also , you have. A addictive nature lol my girl says I have to have bedtime lol 😆 much respect from Maine
Hey Merrill, have you tried the Legend at the beach with the new V1.07 update yet. If so, I'd like to see that video. I've been using mine in the dirt, but not yet at the beach, and I usually hunt in the water. Great video, by the way. _/
Curious... Did you try a noise cancel to see if that remove some of the chatter/falsing? Seems like a solid machine! I mostly detect farm fields and pasture though, can't wait to see how it does on those.
Don't have my Legend yet (ordered the pro pack) but the ID differences are touched upon in the owner's manual (MW vs MD and ground balancing). Not sure if that addresses the issue, but it might. Good video.
As an electronics project builder and hobbyist I am making a prediction that the next generation of metal detecting will use your cell phone as the control box through an app that will use blue tooth to receive the differences in eddy currents that the coils generate. Separation will be done with software through the app....
Okay... Very nice video. Loved the depth but now let's see a search and depth in soil! That will concrete my purchase. Go Go Go! :-) OH! A PARK TOMORROW!! YES!
Great vid, waiting for my pro pack. Interesting to see how deep some of your targets are. Is this a place you,ve hit before with the Equinox? Thanks for the education, i do a lot of beach work as well. John
Hey, I'm a fellow New Yorker. Grew up upstate in Westchester County, Ossining. Where did you get the Legends user manual for your phone? Im carrying the paperback around like a Neanderthal. Did I miss it in my Legends package someplace?

merill there is an issue with the detector calling small gold like earings charms and chains it calls it iron you need to move your first tone break down to like 3 its factory set at 11 you might dig some more iron but at least not leaving gold good luck
If you set the first tone break to 3 you won’t ever dig gold because all you’ll do is dig iron.
Personally I don't care, once I dig a target it it's dug, what it rings up out of the ground is irrelevant but I DO want to dig it if its a good target.
thank you for showing the issues with the first day at the beach, very helpful for me as i just got a legend
The legend with the Legend.
Honored!
Best Explanation of the Legend yet. Simplex Owner now but Legend on my mind.
Merrill,
I have a request.
Bill
Hi Merrill, where is the Tomorrow's Video ? I can't find it. Thanks
Are you having the same problems that Calabash Digger had on his most recent beach video with the legend?
Thanks for a good video. I have a NOKTA and I’m learning slowly.
Dollar for Dollar....for a NEW user.....you might get more with a Legend than a Nox....(I cant believe I just wrote that)
I hope to get my deus 2 also I'm anxiety to the mooooon!
@@MetalDetectingNYC LOL. Hay, what did you "just wrote"?
@@proudlyamerican2764 After a couple of weeks with my Deus II, I'm beginning to love mine.
Fascinating stuff, I like your analytical style.
From what Ive seen you need to run the salt stability setting at 5 to make it equinox quiet
Guess if I get the Legend, I wont be finding those target ID of 90 (Quarters)
#1 Do you think its a drawback to only have a target ID of 1-60 vs the Simplex 1-99 ?
#2 Now that you have used the Legend for a while,(and with firmware updates) does it recover small gold objects similarly to the Equinox ? I'm ready to upgrade.
1.) heck no. Watch the target id bible videos I have. Target ID is nonsense!
2.) Equinox is better at the small stuff.
@@MetalDetectingNYC Thanks for the response
I love settings. I did an entire club hunt yesterday on Beach 2...YAY, me. But I did find plenty of stuff. Met someone who says they'll be hunting with you in Florida in the near future. I might have to see if I can get invited on that trip if you didn't mind. ;-) It would be so awesome to actually meet my MOST favorite metal detecting UA-camr.
Love this video Merrill. I love how you show the learning process and that it can be difficult 👋👍😃
Jim
I, also, ordered my pro pack in November. Still waiting patiently. Kind of. Still snow on the ground here in Salt Lake City. Hopefully soon.
Garrett carrot 🥕. Pro pointer AT.
Excellent video thanks I’m sitting on the fence at the moment and watching.........and waiting .Thanks again
Great video Merrill! Yes the trashed park will reveal all test! I'm impressed watching. 👏 Keep swinging and digging 👍
Thanks for the testing. Now I have the anfibio and it's a great machine. Thought about getting the legend but I decided to keep my anfibio. Love the kr 24 coil which I also had on my simplex.
Happy hunting....
The trade off is it could be a 14k diamond ear ring..The equinox would suck it up easily. 🤔 I don't know about the Legend as of yet..More video info!
Been detecting here in Australia, about 6 years now, had probably 6 different types of detectors, at the moment I have one , noctra anfibio multi , but seriously looking at xp range , hi from au , happy hunting,
Thinking about buying this from your link. I live on long island and would be my first detector . Its onsale for 349
You won’t regret. I appreciate you using the link. I can’t say what it is but you get a perk is you use the code NYC at Kellyco
@MetalDetectingNYC thanks so much I have noticed the unit by itself discontinued due to a refresh of the legend , any input on the refreshed legend
another brilliant video love the style of filming where we learn from your mistakes. Love it cheers dude
In conclusion, do you prefer the Legend or the Equinox 800 overall at the beach for wet And dry now that you've had some months under you belt?
Hi again, so briefly I guess you have to consider the cost, compared to simplex , islegend improved a little or a lot your opinion
So what’s updates are dilek considering to give us with all the testing,
From video it appears your doing great in the semi wet an dry areas
I just bought nox 800 , DEUS 2 and legend a simplex also , you have. A addictive nature lol my girl says I have to have bedtime lol 😆 much respect from Maine
Hey Merrill, have you tried the Legend at the beach with the new V1.07 update yet. If so, I'd like to see that video. I've been using mine in the dirt, but not yet at the beach, and I usually hunt in the water. Great video, by the way. _/
I’m all updated I just haven’t gone to the beach yet. I will try to carve out some time in the coming days. Thanks Luis.
Curious... Did you try a noise cancel to see if that remove some of the chatter/falsing? Seems like a solid machine! I mostly detect farm fields and pasture though, can't wait to see how it does on those.
How much is the legend ? , completely waterproof ?, can u see the screen with polarized glasses ?
I'm thinking of buying a vanquish 440 or 540 as my first detector.
Does the stability adjustment effect the depth?being cherpy and unstable is why I sold my Anfibio
She looks like a keeper. I shall begin saving to buy one
I havent gotten my detector yet but im glad to know so much about tones before i go out and look like a dummy!!
Why don't they make a detector specifically for the beach ?
You did find 2 silver coins and the ferrous indicator will help separate a lot of targets. Your park hunt should tell you a lot, good luck
Okay... Very nice video. Loved the depth but now let's see a search and depth in soil! That will concrete my purchase. Go Go Go! :-) OH! A PARK TOMORROW!! YES!
Coming out tomorrow
@@MetalDetectingNYC I may have to sell a Nox for that.. Then I will have The Trifecta!
Thanks Merrill.
Merill, 19 is an odd number, might as well round up with a future minelab.
Hi just deciding to buy either an xp deus2 or legend.Mostly underwater use. What would you suggest is the better machine.Thanks.
Wow great video and even greater information ℹ️ ❤
Did you ground balance it on the wet Sand
Yes
Great vid, waiting for my pro pack. Interesting to see how deep some of your targets are. Is this a place you,ve hit before with the Equinox? Thanks for the education, i do a lot of beach work as well. John
Hey, I'm a fellow New Yorker. Grew up upstate in Westchester County, Ossining.
Where did you get the Legends user manual for your phone? Im carrying the paperback around like a Neanderthal. Did I miss it in my Legends package someplace?
