Wildlife Overpass | Idaho Highway 21

Last fall, the Idaho Transportation Department, Idaho Fish and Game, and Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation and many crucial partners saw the construction of a new wildlife overpass over Highway 21 northeast of Boise. The overpass is a way to protect motorists and thousands of deer and elk that cross the highway a couple times each year as they move out of the high country and down to the Boise foothills during fall and return in spring to roam as far as the Sawtooth Mountains.

So awesome! Love to see this. Now let’s get one built over highway 20 between Pine Featherville turn and hill city! Another no brainer spot. lt would save so many animals and prevent so many collisions.

Fantastic. I am happy to hear tracks were seen when the overpass was opened. That stretch of highway should be MUCH safer for drivers and for the herds utilizing the underpass and overpass.

These overpasses are an excellent way to protect Idaho's valuable wildlife and drivers with passengers who have to travel through wildlife corridors in Idaho. One of the costliest errors I ever saw done was a system of tunnels placed beneath the interstate south of Malta when that interstate was put in. Obviously designed by an engineer who knew nothing about wild animal behavior 🤣

Standard outreach to government agencies to please contribute new infrastructure info to crowdsourced OpenStreetMap OSM. Bonus points for DIY crowdsourced Mapillary KartaView Mapilio street-level ground-truth images (no waiting for Google, Apple, Bing camera cars to visit!)
