I appreciate how you focus on such a great majority of people who never had any help from anybody on working on their accent & are always made fun of/criticized. I find this extremely helpful & just want to say "I appreciate it"
This is the best accent training for Indians I saw so far on Internet...Wish u were here in India.... As u mentioned...I speak English so fast that I sound like "My home is under Alien attack n I'm fleeing for my life."....
Response to Trisha's comment ... Indian accents are not "frowned upon" ... the issue is that many people from Indian want jobs either with global impact or in the US, and for this purpose, improving the accent is important. In addition, if you work via phone or video conferencing from India with the US, speaking clear American English is vital too ... hope that helps clarify!
+Rebecca Linquist not every indian sounds like that, just because of so many different languages every other Indian has different accent, like Bihari called "v" as "bhi".. not "w" but many of us who went to english medium school , tend to have a nice decent accent however we still have that toning problem. Still, is it necessary to speak in american accent ?
***** you'r from India or do you live in here?? Every states have different accents, even within the same state, the accents might differ. We all Indians are getting judged on South Indian accents..because mostly they go abroad, even "dark skin" stereotype exists because of them. All Indians are not dark skin as brown has different shades and south Indians are DRAVIDIAN race while north indians are INDO-ARYAN.always remember India is more diverse than europe in every perspective. "India is a continent masquerading as a country "
This video was quite helpful for some people who I know got this problem. I am an Indian, but I never actually had an Indian accent. I live in Hong Kong and my school is an International multicultural school, so I interact with hella lots of different people. However, I do see some Indians who struggles because of the accent. I don't know why you are getting so much hate for. You brought up this issue about India and how people can actually improve their accents, if they desire. Keep doing you Rebecca, I am still astonished by your efforts, don't let it go in vein because of some people's ignorance! :) P.S I know my comment is long and its been so long since this video was posted, but couldn't help but comment. xx
Thank you Rebecca for this video. Please ignore the hate comments. There are many people like me who appreciate your videos. Very professional, fun and interesting!
i have never seen anybody explaining like that way. I'm an Indian and i will say to my fellow Indians to stop fighting here. She is no racist or something. She is helpful and nice. If you are not interested ,you can ignore this video. English has two standard accents-American and British. It is always better if we learn one of those accents well enough. Not that Americans will bully you or something like that but it might help to make more and more American friends. The hindi argument doesn't stand as Americans didn't learn hindi at first place. In India, hindi is not our national language either. We have over 50 languages. They have only one.
I am from India and studying at an american university and often face problems while communicating with American people around, as most of the times they are unable to understand my pronunciations in English. This gets serious especially when I am into a viva or in any important presentation. God knows what will happen when I will have to face meetings and interviews. So my issue is genuine- to speak in American accent, just for better communication (and ofcourse it sounds better compared to Indian accent). Here, in this video I got exactly what I wanted. Thank you ma'am. Keep it up, the good work!

Very good video. Speaking English with correct accent is very important. Try to improve or don't complain when native speakers ask you to repeat yourself. When in Rome, do as Romans do.
All my problem is with the word 'Improve'. U might want to learn American English and accent if U are settling there or if U aspire to work for an American call-center. But don't be under any illusion that American-English is the standard English. English originated in England and it's the British English which is 'THE' standard English.
@@nandakishoren2138 You're right buddy, we aren't bound to speak in American or British accent. But in India, most of the people lack miserably in this language even in their non-verbal communication skills. When it comes to verbal communications, people mispronounce words and also the alphabets - even the English medium graduates! So it's always better to follow pronunciation apps to rectify ourselves, whether American or British or any other native English speaking country, there's enough room for improvement, I can say so because I've improved my pronunciation via apps. Just one more thing, you're a little mistaken, albeit British English of course is the original one, but both British & American English are considered standardized today, whereas Canadian, Australian, Irish, South African, etc. are not. But one can follow those accents as well if they are available worldwide on the apps.
When I first came to US 10 years ago from India, I used to annoyed listening to some of my fellow Indian friends faking american accent, but then I slowly realized how important it is to learn an accent or at least neutralize one's accent. Your suggestions have immensely helped me, this is probably the best way to learn accent. I have recently joined toastmasters and will be using your techniques. Thank you!
It is a really nice video. Thanks Rebecca. I've been trying for sometime to improve and hold back my pace while speaking English but didn't know how to. But, now I do. All thanks to you. I'm a qualified English trainer and have been working for 8 yrs now. Most often I tend to speak British way but now I can do in American way as well.
There is also a video on You Tube for Arabic speakers. I don't have too many in California to work with, but I suggest that you work on your /r/ sounds and make sounds are not coming from the throat area - use plenty of breath and record yourself so you can hear the differences!
thank you - I am an ESL teacher here in NYC and my students from India have these issues - I only have a few, but these techniques will help with other languages too. I hope I can give you some pointers or two in the future (to return the favor). thank you again. Glenn
Thanks a million from India. The rubber band method to understand and learn where to stress over a syllable is great one. I'll definitely use it in my V&A trainings. :)
@rebeccalinquist Also, there are many regional dialects in the US. It's always a good idea to know your intent before embarking on an accent or dialect modification program - do you want a job in a play where you have to sound like you are from Kentucky? Are you moving to NY? Do you live in CA and want a promotion? Do you want to speak so everyone understands you regardless of where they live? Once your goals are clear, you will know which accent/dialect you need to acquire.
@oublienate Depends on who your audience is - if you are providing service to Americans or plan to live or study in the US, then it's extremely important!
People..please don't make fun of other countries here.. This is a great video and a sincere effort to help Indians and needs to be appreciated. Tony..u are setting a very bad example for Indians by making fun of other countries and culture. India is a multicultural society and if that has not taught to appreciate other cultures..then u have a lot to learn. Even i am an Indian and feel coming across different people/cultures in different countries enriches our own experience..
I see a lot of baseless hate. While it is true some Americans make fun of the Indian accent, it is clear you're not one of them. They also happen to be some of the most creative pieces of work I have seen in my life.
I do agree with the last part of the comment. American Movies and TV-Shows are far better than the Indian ones. NOT that Indian Industry cannot make things, but they *do NOT*, because of various factors, especially because Indian Film and Entertainment Industry is governed by few people and few families across the linguistic states all over the country. :)
You might for the "neutral accent" taught in Indian call center - a combination of American, Australian & British sounds for clarity. We don't teach it, but if you google "neutral accent" you should get some leads.

It's important if people in the US can't understand you and you want to get a job here OR if you work at a computer (for example) and you want to become a manager. Improving your speech skills can help you transition.
Hey Rebecca, I speak good English and don't have any mother tongue influence issues as such. I just wanna know if it would be possible for me to learn American accent over the internet as I am in India and English is less spoken here, let alone the American accent!
A good educational video. I already speaking up in good American accent but i haven't traveled out of my country- MY knowledge - movies, Tv , web and video games.
hai frnd !! thanks for this video !! I am indian student, doing professional course ! still iam learning and improving and doing lot of work on english language !! i am following ur videos frm last day ! plz put a list of videos for indians that could help us alot ! plz increase ur volume bcoz the voice volume is so slow ! i hope u understand!! thank u!!
My niece is smart. She picked up the American accent. I have no clue how she got it down. Maybe being in UAE made the difference. Definitely the Indian accent is a liability, for voice acing for cartoon characters. We need teachers like you in India, to train kids to speak English. The younger they get trained the better it will be for them.
I wouldn't feel too bad about it. Everyone is different, and some people just have an affinity for learning languages without an accent, but anyone can learn to do it if that's important to you. You can visit my website to learn more: www.englishbythehour.com
@zkas19 you miss the point, they give "american" names because typically nobody ( white at least ) would remember the actual indian name or butcher it to death.the problem is not indian its the american who can't process names with several syllables.A Indian friend of mine has Tamil roots.he repeats his name 7 times and ppl still get wrong.
As a native Indian speaker (The "Indian" Indian not the American Indian), I'd like to add my two cents. Indians are more or less tropical species, the air was fresh and warm for the ancestors who developed our languages; hence the throaty, free-flowing sounds with more elaborate movements of the jaws when we pronounce some words compared to the Gaelic/Scandinavian languages whose native speakers lived in the unforgiving colds of northern hemispheres, who had to breathe heavily in the harsh winters and could only speak with a higher pitch and tone whilst inhaling, or could only open their mouths thus far. This perhaps also, albeit partially, explains some of the diversity observed amongst Spanish speakers in Europe and the Latin Americas. What's interesting though is an accent is frowned upon based on what languages might be affecting it and hence the peoples associated with it, and yet, conversely someone who has learned the language in the native environments tends to have a more native accent!
As an Indian English speaker, from what I have observed, Indians mostly tend to mispronounce words and even the alphabets, ie, V/B, J/Z, F/Ph, S/Sh etc. But that's understandable since English has never been our native language & we didn't grow up speaking this language, forget about speaking it in a proper manner. What we are frowned upon for is our disinclination to rectify ourselves when the correct pronunciation comes along. Instead of acknowledging and correcting themselves, Indians exude a "know-it-all" attitude & pomposity and rather scoff at the one correcting them. Same is the case when you rectify someone's grammatical error, they derogate you by calling you a "grammar nazi". In that case, I believe looking down upon such Indians is rightly called for.
This is beautiful!! Please, unsolicited Indian telemarketers, please, watch this video and practice it! Just a suggestion, it'd be awesome if you had Subtitles for each word you said... you can make them using "UA-cam Annotations"
@rebeccalinquist Is it difficult to sell products and services for those with an indian accent ? It seems like a handicap while talking to an American clients. And in any case call center jobs are now moving to the Philipines, where hopefully there are more American English Speakers..
Thank you ma'am... I hope you read this post of mine....I love America the most...I would love to settle there...I am a hollywood fan and I keep watching Hollywood movies every time...I also love to intimate the accent upto some level......This video has helped me to upgrade it thank you very much.
Beautiful.I am an indian and have lived in the US for long time. I brielfly left US and moved back to india for a long time and came back. I noticed that my accent had changed when I came back second time around. Now I speak with a indian accent but I use american pronounciation and tones but every now and then I get a indian terret syndrome..hehe exactly like russel peters says. Its like my indian side is asserting itself after feeling repressed.I feel like Indiansing american accents is that ok?
Hi Rebecca. I am an Indian student in US. Its been 4 months for me here. Exactly th things that you pointed out were pointed out by my American friends here. Many find it hard understanding me sometimes and some goes for me with some Americans. I would like to learn the American accent so that the communication becomes easy for both me and my American friends but I don't have the money to hire a linguist. Can you please tell me how I can I learn on my own?
Hi, Thanks for your comments. I've noticed that there are quite a few different American accents of speaking English like those that Italian Americans speak, or the African American lingo or the accent from the Southern states that's spoken with a drawl, or the Latin American accent. How do you manage to reconcile with these accents? I guess it is difficult to completely wipe out the linguistic traits of ones own native language. And why does only the Indian Accent have to be corrected?
@zkas19 First, I don't think the Indian accent has to be "corrected" - I think many people in India want to get jobs selling products and services to Americans, and they are choosing to speak in an American accent in order to be more successful in their careers. Second, many others learn the American Accent too, often because they live here and want to speak well in their jobs to get promotions and compete against others for key positions.
You're really really really awesome for teaching. I love to be your special student. Is it possible? In this one video I've learnt lotta things what i've been expecting. Thank you so much.
@LaughingOTI80 And some estimates say organizations can save 26% or more on outsourcing and also on automation - the internet alone with no humans involved at all is doing many of the job retailers used to do. I ordered online today and was offered free gift and shipping for products that are available at the store, so you can see where it's headed. Most of my clients live in the US and just want to speak clearly at work.
@Aditya Joshi Did I say that she is trying to do that? I'm not so sure because I can't see my last comment. This is my opinion and what I think.Obviously, this would be helpful for all Indians that want to have completely fluent american accent.
@yarmo28 I'm not an ESL teacher targeting students who speak little English in a school. I work with executives and professionals who speak fluent English yet have accents, and I'm sharing insights into how to speak American English from this perspective. To me, it's not about toys, it's about creating behavioral change - make sense?
I have a Question for you, I'm not Indian but I from the island below it(which has close sounding languages "Sinhalese") I did speak English as long as I can remember. My accent is sort of rough when I speak not Indian-ish but it sounds too deep and I do always tend to get stuck or use the wrong word/words some times. I haven't thought about going abroad to US UK AU or other Countries, but in case I do what Accent should I practice, I want an accent that any body can hear and understand. Thanks
As a native English speaker watching this is kind of surreal, the effort other people have to put into sounding like Americans is kind of hilarious but I'm glad they are that dedicated to being able to be understood.
Glad to hear it! You should try my new program on Vimeo: vimeo.com/ondemand/learnamericanaccent or vimeo.com/ondemand/speakwithconfidence ... they're only $30 each, and they have free trailers you can try.
hello my name is tejal i am a 15 yrs old indian student. well i think that i have improved my american accents good by watching news and american movies.but sometimes while talking i lose my american accents and it comes to indian again i tried a lot not to get troubled but why does it happens please explain it to me in details
trinity hale We talk our language from mouth and make sure that our mates understand. But when you are trying to talk like an American, you actually stress the words from stomach. This makes you tired, it feels painful for us. Solutions: Either think you are cool with American accent or just face the pain and time will lead to success. Which i mean keep practicing by going though this pain.
Maya Sri If you breathe deeper, you won't have to try so hard and it will get easier! :-) It's also good for you to breathe and speak diaphragmatically!
I am an American, born in the US, and have studied some other languages with native speaker, and been immersed in those areas to learn them. So I really notice when my born in India friend speaks what I would term "Indian English". We live in Central NC where there are many Asian people who work and live near us. In our town of 150,000 about 1/3 are from the group are targeting. Because there are so many people around speaking with this accent I think there is an erroneous assumption by the speakers that all is fine. It requires patience at times to follow a conversation, despite written fluency, it can result in misunderstandings or confusion. For this reason I really support your work Rebecca. I plan to suggest to my 34 year old friend that she attempt to develop a speech style that sounds like Americans, and not as she does. I recall and appalled French professor in University who told me that I spoke French with a Spanish accent. I had learned Spanish first, and so since she was born and raised in France I believe she was correct. I worked on it and improved it considerably. While doing business in Sweden a number of years ago my fluent in English native Swedish colleagues drove us to Norway, and made a lot of fun about the "cute" Norwegian accents and words. As I'm sure most of us know it is very common in Scandinavia and Finland to learn 7 or more languages because it is necessary to function in the world. I'm delighted to have found your work because I really would like to support my friend in her career. Our teen son finds it difficult to follow her at times when conversing, so I know it would benefit her. She also is interested in dating and honestly I think prospective American men, she prefers them to Indian guys, would appreciate having a fluent American accent.

It's important if people in the US can't understand you and you want to get a job here OR if you work at a computer (for example) and you want to become a manager. Improving your speech skills can help you transition.
Intelligent teacher looks like she does a lot of research very impression
Hey Rebecca, I speak good English and don't have any mother tongue influence issues as such. I just wanna know if it would be possible for me to learn American accent over the internet as I am in India and English is less spoken here, let alone the American accent!
A good educational video. I already speaking up in good American accent but i haven't traveled out of my country- MY knowledge - movies, Tv , web and video games.
Excellent . Waiting for more videos for Indian students btw you did not say our mother tongue Malayalam
sorry! I should have! I love Malayalam speakers! beautiful sounds!
Thank you very much for the reply. When read the lines I was at clod nine... Lots of love..

@gauravzerogravity I'll learn yours ... which Indian accent do you have and what's your method for teaching it to someone?
The best trainer i hv ever seen. its reeeaalllyyyy an awesome video.... Thank You
please Rebecca add few more videos, for whose first language is hindi.
You can visit my website to learn more: www.englishbythehour.com
thankyou , some tips really proved helpful for me!
And you have great control over voice .
Try my new accent program: vimeo.com/ondemand/learnamericanaccent
Thanks will check it out for sure.
Thanks a lot, Its really helpful and m practicing v & w sound. wow! do make more videos.

@rebeccalinquist Is it difficult to sell products and services for those with an indian accent ? It seems like a handicap while talking to an American clients. And in any case call center jobs are now moving to the Philipines, where hopefully there are more American English Speakers..
I like this program....great advices.
Thank you ma'am... I hope you read this post of mine....I love America the most...I would love to settle there...I am a hollywood fan and I keep watching Hollywood movies every time...I also love to intimate the accent upto some level......This video has helped me to upgrade it thank you very much.
Mouth muscles are strained doing the American accent
British accent is more swift and can be done with ease
Beautiful.I am an indian and have lived in the US for long time. I brielfly left US and moved back to india for a long time and came back. I noticed that my accent had changed when I came back second time around. Now I speak with a indian accent but I use american pronounciation and tones but every now and then I get a indian terret syndrome..hehe exactly like russel peters says. Its like my indian side is asserting itself after feeling repressed.I feel like Indiansing american accents is that ok?
Actually, most of my clients live in the US
Thank you very much Rebecca. This is really helpful stuff.
hi can you please make a video like that for haitian or african speakers since both nationality are almost similar? thank you
btw, difference b/n sound'w' and 'v' and 'd' for 'th' isn't specific for American,
It's English sound. Vain, wall, Bath room, they. etc.
However, these sounds are pronounced differently in British English and other varieties of English.
And why does only the Indian Accent have to be corrected?
good effort, thanks for the video
Thank you! This really really helped
@korikrali is it "misspellt" or "misspelled" ... or does it even matter?
You are doing a good job...Thanks for doing.
W0w, really useful, love the way you presented it, thanks a lot!
@Aditya Joshi
Did I say that she is trying to do that?
Thanks
thanx for your help, i like your video.your voice is very beautiful
englishbythehour
add the dot and com ... it won't let me put a website in this box for some reason
As a native English speaker watching this is kind of surreal, the effort other people have to put into sounding like Americans is kind of hilarious but I'm glad they are that dedicated to being able to be understood.
@ Rebecca Linquist , it is the 2ND TIME I'M WATCHING UR VIDEO !!! U'RE A REALLY GOOD TEACHER... I LOVED THE RUBBERBAND IDEA OF URS
Glad to hear it! You should try my new program on Vimeo: vimeo.com/ondemand/learnamericanaccent or

hello my name is tejal i am a 15 yrs old indian student. well i think that i have improved my american accents good by watching news and american movies.but sometimes while talking i lose my american accents and it comes to indian again i tried a lot not to get troubled but why does it happens please explain it to me in details
trinity hale We talk our language from mouth and make sure that our mates understand.
Oh, thanks for the tip. :)
+trinity hale i too agree ...
+trinity hale please u can learn me ?
very good lesson but where is the smile teacher , y so serious u have a beautifull smile.keep smiling.
nice video on how to avoid MTI in English. Thanks
Thank you so much for your support and happy holidays!
Great job! You are marvelous!
I don't disagree with you. It's definitely a personal choice, often motivated by job opportunities. I'm just sharing how to do it IF it's desired.
