hi..i am an Indian aspirant for an advanced English speaking.I am so impressed with your classes on you tube.I am looking for your assistance. If you could do something in this line ,that will be highly appreciated.please guide me..thanks in advance.
Very true and good point Tony. I have met speakers as well with accents that still have grammar at a University level. However, accents will help a person in job interviews, public speaking, media etc. It can also help a person with their self confidence. As someone who was ESL (English as a Second language) as a Native dutch speaker and lost his accent (thanks to young age) I know this more than anyone when I hear the questions they are asked even after being in Canada 42 years :)
I enjoy your videos and would like to work with the speech couch. Even though I have been living in States for almost fifteen years I still have pretty thick accent (Polish). I need to diminish it as much as possible and I would be interested in your service in improving/aquiring American accent. Thank you.
I meant to include above questions my parents are still asked like "Where are you from". Perception and the assumptions that go along with it are something a correct regional accent can dispel without effort :)
I am American and only speak American-English. But, there are so many different foreign accents here that it doesn't sound strange. Even the very heavy accents doesn't mean a person can't speak English and I usually have no problem understanding what they are saying. So, for you who have come to live in the United States and worry about your broken English, try not to worry about it so much. The truth is I not only accept a foreign accent, most I like to hear.
Thank you very much for your videos. They are very helpful. Could you please make a video teaching how to pronounce "possible". I found this word very difficult to pronounce like natives. Thank you :)
Hey Rebecca.. Great job posting these videos.. I am having trouble pronouncing "S" sounds. It sounds slushy.... Also having trouble creating resonance while speaking. I am straining my throat while trying to resonate....It could be because of stress,..... I am working 10-14 hours a day.....sometimes 7 days a week.. I am an Indian if that matters.. Thanks again.
Becky, if you're going to use a tissue and discuss breath and correct pronunciation, you should mention and define plosives; (derived from the word explosive) words that begin with, or contain, the letters P and/or B, sometimes T and F. It's that slight puff of air (breath) needed to form these words. Peter, Piper, Picked a Peck, and so on.
Thanks for this Rebecca! and on top of these useful techniques, I think you are very beautiful and elegant! You look very sophisticated! I bet you have good etiquettes like those ladies in the old European movies LOL
I'm a Canadian and we have our own variants of an English accent. Australian, New Zealand, South African, Canadian, US, and Great Britain all speak correct English. She speaks correct "American" English and that is all she is claiming. She never claimed to teach "British" English (which itself has dozens of accents). Before you make a comment you should educate yourself so you don't come across as just another person who doesn't take the time to research before partaking in a topic.
Thanks, and just in case you were interested and didn't notice, you can now get my most current program on Vimeo: vimeo.com/ondemand/learnamericanaccent
Kids, the American Continent is Formed by, North America, Centro America and South America that why it is called The American Continent. It doesn't mean it belongs to the USA.
To all of the Latinos on here that are making a fuss about people from the United States referring to themselves as "Americans". People all over the world know the United States as "America". Only Central & South Americans make a fuss about it. So you guys are Central or South American or Mexican. Who cares? Do you rally think of yourselves or identify yourselves as "Americans"?
John Doe --- yes people from South and Central America are yes Americans too!! in a general way we can call ourselves like this for sure!! if we want to reffer us as a South or Central American it´s up to us! we are both S/ C American and American! there´s no mistakes about it. it´s like people from Europe...they call themselves european even they live in noth, south e etc. you have to grasp geography. People from US are called Americans because of the name of their country but also if they wanna call themselves as north American it´s up to them. i hope you understand this!! a little of geography will help you to get this.
BIOEVOL evolução typically though you would not refer to yourself as an American if you were from a South or Central American country. You would refer to yourself by that country's name, example: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala. If you were from South America, you would refer to yourself by that country's name, example: Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela - - NO WHERE in that list is the word America - so you are splitting hairs. Americans refer to themselves as Americans for the reason that you state - it is the name of our country, The United States of AMERICA...simple, no other explanation. We do not refer to ourselves as North Americans - we refer to ourselves as Americans the same way a person from Venezuela would refer to themselves as a Venezuelan
