    Hi Rebecca,In behalf of all the thousands of non-English speakers like me,I'd like to say thank you for posting this video. This really helps. I am a non-native English speaker myself,I've been here in the States for a little over seven years now and I still struggle with my command of English and my accent too. I am not that bad but I still have obvious Filipino accent in me that sometimes I find it very frustrating when people would ask me to repeat what I said because I sound differently.

    Hi, Rebecca! I've seen a lot of American teachers on youtube, and I think one way to prove your success is by hearing your students speak after a year or 6 months of learning from your method. My question is this, do your students get improvements dramatically? Because I've subscribed to tons and tons of American English channels and i don't know where to start! Thank you

    That elastic band technique is cool. I used to speak way too quickly and unclearly, but I've combined what you teach with Alexander Technique (no stress) speaking exercises - I now speak more clearly, easily and calmly. Thanks.

    Mrs. Linquist, thank you so much for this video. It really helped me. For a long time, I've been struggling trying to find out what was it that still made my American English sound a bit odd - I don't have a foreign accent (or at least I don't think so), I just had sort of a weird way of pronouncing the words, they kind of got out 'strangled' and not "round" enough.
    Using your advice on breathing and moving the lips and the jaw, my pronunciation has improved dramatically.

  • @rebeccalinquist
    @rebeccalinquist  11 років тому

    It's true - watching videos alone won't change your speech dramatically because without the native ear of a trained professional correcting you, you're not likely (as a adult) to be able to create the necessary changes to acquire the accent you desire. If you get a Coach and do focused sessions over 2-3 month period, you should notice a big difference, provided that you can hear well and do the exercises your Coach recommends.

    I have an Australian accent, but my parents are from the Phillipines. When I talk to my parents my accent changes to filipino/English. However when I'm with aussies or other people in general my accent reverts back to Australian. Sometimes it is awkward when there are Filipinos and Aussies at the same time. I don't know if you've heard of such a symptom, but is quite common among Filipino's who grow up in English speaking countries. (Including my cousins in America).

    The keys to change are awareness & systematic correction. A native speaking coach has to point out what you are doing differently so you can identify it (hear and feel the differences ... something feel more than hear, as adults) and then devise a plan to determine the correct order for you to create change in (which things to work on first, second, third) and then you have to be correct weekly for about 3 months to see a change ... hope that helps! Visit my website for a free consultation!

    Watching movies is a great source of data and helps listening comprehension, but it's not likely to help you modify your accent unless you're doing it during or after accent modification coaching with focused attention to key areas.

    I think my problem is not only my accent, but also the words I use to speak English. American use many phrase to speak, but I use the word from the books. For example, I would say"I have much money" But American say "i got lots of money"
    or I would say "please wait a moment" , but I heard lots American say "hold on a second"
    So that people don't understand me...

  • @hoseaj

    I think those that come to these videos come here to learn how to speak American English as the speaker suggest. If you want to understand why American English is important it would be wise to learn a little about world history. Imperialistic countries have taken turns over thousands of years. Each one that is in power or has the most influence in the world ends up controlling the worlds common language. Has nothing to do with which language is better. Respect those that just what they want.

    If I listen to some of my friend speaking my native language Indonesian in that way, exaggerating, it is too obviously different and kind of funny to listen.
    But, a couple of months ago I realized that English is an exaggerating spoken language. What came to my mind is it's natural to wonder why English is that exaggerating since English is a stress language. Btw, I am right, teacher? I'm looking forward to any response from you.

    How can one open his/her mouth wide with more air flow for clearer speech articulation without spraying listener? To alleviate my problem with spraying while talking, I had to hold a marble in my mouth while practice English which consequently will reduce the mouth opening. Moreover, English has lots of ZZZ words as opposed to other languages especially the ones from South East Asia, and the ZZZ sound is the main culprit!

And I love the fact that you corrected the English I wrote AFTER you wrote that it's less THAN (not then) to be desired. Plus your capitalization is all over the place. I'd only accept corrections from you if your typing was totally flawless and you actually had a legitimate point. Since it's not, and you don't. . .
