Thank you for your thoughtful review. It's always nice to see a youngster (I'm 68) with a revolver, especially one willing to consider its utility for certain purposes. My GP 100 is the Lipsey/Ruger, 5-inch barrel, 5-shot, Roper-stocked .44 Special; and my first revolver was the GP 100-'s predecessor, a Security Six (blue, 4-inch) purchased in 1978. In town, I carry a Kimber Ultra CDP II (3-inch 1911), a Sig P938, or an S&W 60-15 (.357, 3-inch). In the forest, however, I don't mind taking some heavier-weighted firearms: .44 Special, .44 mag, .41 mag, .45 Colt, or .357 New Vaquero. You can't go wrong with a Ruger .357. Happy and safe shooting!

Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm wanting to do more revolver content, but they don't seem generate as much interest compared to other firearm types. Some revolver videos planned: S&W J-Frames, S&W K38, S&W 586-1. I also have a video on the S&W K22 in .22LR.

Having both, i can say as much as i like my older GP-100 in .357 Mag, my newer GP-100 in the perfect chambering of .44 Special wins hands down, especially in the woods or for serious work.
It's not called Special for nuttin' .

Really like your work young man! I recently got a GP100 4.2" barrel. Range time was this morning. Very impressed at how comfortable it is firing full magnum loads. I used to own a former police S&W 6" 357 and it used to ring me like a bell with the report of each shot. I could feel it in my jaw. That was weirdly unforgettable. Mine is the target model in SS. Was very pleased with it this morning at the range! It is "just right" out of the box and needs nothing. Now I am just awaiting a holster to come in so I can carry it.

I already had a 4 inch 357 GP stainless and was very happy with it, then one day I went to the local gun shop to see if they would take a micro Kimber 1911 that just wasn't doing it for me, of course their offer wasn't what I wanted, the shop then asked if I wanted to trade for a full size Springfield 1911, as I was filling out the paperwork for it, the gentleman said "before you fill that out, we just got this in" he then pulled out a 3 inch stainless steel 7 shot357 GP100, needless to say I took that bad boy home, both GP's are reliable and will shoot any ammo that's loaded without a hiccup, basically I got two beefy revolvers for the price of what I would have paid for one Colt Python (no knock against the Python!)

I want this as my next purchase to be my personal carry self defense firearm except for what I want is the 3 inch barrel length. I have shot this revolver several times and was impressed with it's accuracy and not to heavy of a recoil for a 357. The 357 cartridge has become my favorite cartridge for all around use, target shooting, hunting and self defense and most, not all but most of the firearms that I own are chambered in this cartridge. Even my favorite hunting rifle is chambered for this cartridge, the Henry bigboy lever action rifle, and it's hunting companion the Ruger Blackhawk 357. I will tell you all, you can't go wrong with any Ruger firearm and definitely can't do much better than the 357 cartridge for it's stopping power on just about anything you are liable to come across in this country, that is all but the grizzly bear, if you come across the grizzly bear and all you have is a 357 , leave, climb a tree, anything except shooting the bear, if you do you just might be in for the worst day of your life with a very pissed off bear. While it is possible to take one down, myself, I would not want to attempt it with a 357

I see that I'm a little bit late to this party, but good job on the video. Last month I was in the market for a new centerfire revolver. I have had the S&W M66, M65, and two Ruger Blackhawks in 357 and regret letting them go many years ago. My wife really likes her Taurus 85 and I still have a Taurus 605 in my night stand; so we have some pretty good experience with revolvers and I haven't gotten into the rimfire revolvers we have. Anyway, I looked at a lot of revolvers last month because I really wanted to compare quality and price. My first choice was going to be a S&W Model 10 or 36 but I didn't realize they were like trying to find unicorn poop. My choices in 38 or 357 really came down to Ruger GP100, SP101, Blackhawk with some super long barrel, a few Colt's, and a bunch of hammerless S&W's. I don't like hammerless and I wanted adjustable sights. I have never handled a Colt and I was not impressed with their triggers even a little. In the end, I went with the GP100 in stainless and have zero regrets. It is so smooth in every aspect.

if i understand it correctly it has to do with the axis of rotation and the direction the cylinder swings into and out of the frame. that's why S&W very quickly put a front lockup point on their revolvers in the early 1900s and colt has done without a second lockup point since the beginning. been awhile since i watched the c&rsenal video where they explain it

I have a perverse feeling there may have been a particularly good reason, at least as what I imagine the reason to be a part from the actual reality, of why Bill Ruger created the GP-100, the Blackhawk and the Redhawk frames. Create revolvers that not even Elmer Keith can destroy with his Let's See How Far We Can Take This style of overly excessive reloading practices. Mr.Keith was a scientist after all but he was infamous for making more than a few untimely demises of some Colt SSA's. And if it wasn't for these sacrifices we might never have had the .357 and .44 magnum cartridges.

Yeah , Don’t compare 357 mag ballistic results with 9mm . There is No comparison 357 is comparable to 10mm and will even outperform 10 mm when hand loaded all day everyday. Not mocking 9mm but my 2” 357 still out performed 9mm on the chronograph and gel by 200-300 fps . That was with standard 357 out of a 2” barrel and 9 mm+p out of a 5” barrel . Don’t know where these BS charts or tests are happening. 9mm fan boys want it so I guess. I like 9mm just fine for capacity, convenience, and style of gun. But ballistically there is no comparison.

Hi thanks for watching. The velocity is a distinct advantage of .357 Magnum giving you a larger window in which expansion occurs, making the round shoot with a flatter trajectory, requiring less lead on moving targets etc. However most self defense rounds are specifically designed to have similar effects on flesh to one another and are designed for shooting humans, so 9mm self defense rounds performing similarly on ballistic gel is not an indictment of .357, just something to consider specifically in terms of self defense.

Yesterday I went a picked up my new GP100 with a 4.2 inch barrel. I took it home to clean it before taking it to sight in and found there is no rifling in the barrel. It took it back to the store where I bought it, BigR here in Colorado. I wanted to return the pistol and they told me, "Your gun your problem" and that was that. Today I found another gun shop that would let me send the pistol back to Ruger from there store cuz the Ruger shipping label was for FedEx. Now I have an unknown wait time before I ever see the new handgun I paid dearly for. Most disappointing purchase.

Was the faulty ammunition that you talked about the Armscor brand, lately I have seen several videos of people who have bought this brand in 38; special and had the same problem with one bullet lodging in the barrel of the man's brand new revolver his first time shooting it. The bad thing is that Armscor will not take or return any calls about this problem. I believe that any company should stand behind what they sell and something is suspicious about them when they don't and won't so much as return a phone call, stay away from Armscor brand ammunition, at least until they prove themselves worthy of your trust

I came back because 4 weeks ago I commented here about a GP100 I bought that was a smooth bore. I contacted Ruger, they sent me a shipping label and I was able to send it back. In no time after they received it I got an email saying it was being checked out and in no time they sent it back with a new barrel on it. It shoots well and straight. With the new 3 day waiting period our sodomite governor instituted it took as much time to actually buy the rifle as it did for Ruger to repair it and send it back. Yes, Ruger.

Jared. I know this comment is coming a little late to the game. I just picked up a GP100 in .44 special. it has a rubber Ruger stamped Hogue grip that has the same grip angle and size as the GP100 Match Champion grip. That you showed in your video. I know it helps more with hot loads than the Ruger "Lett" (wood inset) grips. it make shooting .44 special Keith loads more comfortable. It is not as customizable or good look as the Lett grips, but it does work great for fast follow ups.
By the way the GP100 and Super Redhawk are my favorite working revolvers. Thank you for the review. For show and accuracy I go with an old Dan Wesson. If you think the Ruger cylinder release is trick. You should give a DW a try. Especially with your non dominate hand hold for reloading. It just works.

Excellent video! I was thinking about getting the GP100 or the 686+. I really wanted to get a Ruger Redhawk 8 shot .357 magnum, but you can't find them new anywhere, and they are waaaay too expensive. So, I sided with the 686+ 4 inch. I have nothing against Ruger, but I also held both in my hands and I found that the 686+ just fit better. I am by no means knocking the Ruger GP100. In fact, if I had to buy another .357 magnum aside from S&W, the GP100 7 shot would most definitely be my second choice. Again, great video! You just got yourself a subscriber.

They are superb;: accurate, reliable, durable, able to handle every load, well designed, good for every task - it’s the Swiss Army Knife of mid-sized .357s - and top-quality. I would NEVER give either up.

I got my GP100 last year. 6 shot capacity, 6" bull barrel, stainless steel, rosewood/polymer grips, target sights. The gun shipped in 1994 according to Ruger's website. Whoever owned it before me took good care of it. Even after 30 years, the trigger, hammer, crane, cylinder, and ejector are all as smooth as silk. It's a blast to shoot at the range, and to show off. Great video, it helped me decide (justify) to buy my gun. You have a great channel.

How is the 7 shot gp100?

  • @meangreen320
    @meangreen320 Рік тому

No doubt the Ruger is durable , but I don’t believe it’s more durable than a SW 686 in its same class. The Ruger uses casting , therefore it requires more material to be as durable as a forged frame that is visually thinner.
The mr88 was essentially a French cast version of the 73 with a few gp 100 controls and features that made it far easier and cheaper to produce than the mr73. It wasn’t commercially successful and the french special forces ended up having the gun replaced really quickly with semi autos or keeping their mr73.
Unlike the mr73, there want enough time or testing to really try out the mr88 to see if it could compare to the 73.

I know ammunition reviews can be boring especially of target grade ammo but when there is a failure or malfunction that is verifiable with video its relevant. I like that you pointed out the ambient conditions you were operating the firearm in.

Good review, and I learned something new when you mentioned the MR88, I appreciate that. By the way, you got some long fingers, but they're thin. I noticed in the CZ PCR vid that your hands don't cover the entire length of the grip, but you can reach the slide release without adjusting your grip.
Even when I choke up as high as possible on my P-01, I cover the entire grip and the base plate of the 15-round mag I use when I carry. I can't reach the slide release with the main hand without turning it just a bit, I can still shoot with that grip it just isn't as comfortable.
My dad has a 686+ while I have a GP100 7 shot, and I got the classic grips. I gotta say that I like grips on that GP100 ALOT more than the all-around thinner ones on the 686. It feels like I get more leverage on the grip and trigger pull. Despite the grip angle, I find it comfortable, and I can still point it as naturally as any semi-auto I have.
I shot one several years ago, I remember liking it and shooting it better than any other handgun I had shot at that time. I recently got the one I just mentioned. I look forward to trying it out and practicing with it a lot, as I can't do the same with my Dan wesson w12 given that it's one of the first with the external barrel nut.
