    My grandfather is Italian.
I have only seen him cry when my grandmother died and when he sees Marco van Basten on television.
Even when Marco gives just commentary on a football game in a language my grandfather doesn’t understand.
That tells me how great Marco was, and still is, in Italy.

@Ordinary Opinion I think so too. Why would anybody cry over seeing a person that you admire on TV?
I mean, he can obviously cry over what he want but since the commentator wrote that he never saw him cry except at the 2 mentioned times, I call bs. Sounds a bit fake.

It's incredible to think that in his short career (only 10 years), Marco Van Basten was fully fit in only 3 (actually the first 3), and until the rest of his career he had to deal with problems with his ankles and knees, and despite these problems, he scored a massive amount of goals, won many trophies and won the Ballon d'Or 3 times.
Imagine what kind of player he could be without these injuries...

Pound for pound Holland may be the one country that has produced the best players, certainly in Europe. With a population of around 15 million (and less 20-50 years ago) it is quite remarkable how many technically gifted players have come out of the Netherlands. And they keep coming. Yes, based on technical skill, Holland has underachieved. They should have won in 1974, maybe even in 1978. Not to forget the matches against Brazil in 1994 and 1998. The one in 1994 was a great, great game. Even Beckenbauer himself said around 25-30 years ago in a joint TV interview with Cruyff that Cruyff was the best player to ever come out of Europe. Marco van Basten is one of my all-time favorite players and he was without a doubt the best striker of his era and one of the best of all time.

Not to be rude, but I never really saw Ronaldo as someone that has one truely special talent. He has this weird combination where he's exceptional at almost everything, but he's not truly special when it comes to anything except for maybe heading the ball or his work ethic off the pitch. He was an exceptional dribbler till he turned ~30, but not as good as Messi or Ronaldinho or Hazard. He has a phenomenal 'weak foot', but not as good as Sneijder or Kroos or Beckham. His finishing is superb, but it's not as good as Lewandowski, Van Basten or Ronaldo Nazario. He has style and some flair, but not that special touch that Bergkamp or Zidane had. Just look at the pictures of the Dutchies celebrating this win and in the 'grachten van Amsterdam' (Amsterdam's Canals). Great time to be a Dutch boy growing up.
For him (and us as a Nation) it was too bad that he got those ankle injuries. And the fiasco of 1990 World Cup... Always heard that Van Basten and other players wanted Johan Cruyff as Coach of the national team. The Dutch League chose a different coach and the team never was a team from the start.

Maradona said: "Van Basten was a perfect machine who broke down as soon as he was about to be the best ever" that alone should make everyone think. Besides that he's the only player who won 3 balón d'ors and retired so early. What should stand out tho is watching him play, he had Benzema and lewandowskis touch, Suarez dribbling, van persies coordination, inzaghis off ball movement and zlatan's flair. Only strikers that come close are the Ronaldos: Cristiano is actually more efficient but less classy, R9 was more explosive but had 1/10 of van Bastens ability off the ball. In conclusion the most elegant and pure number 9 that's ever crossed the football pitch.

@@lior995 we have to wait till Lewas Carreer is over. Then we can judge on who is better. But Müller imo is top 3 strikers of all time. Most dont even know him

Imagine him today and the price he would have been bought. Van Basten at his time met career-destroying defenders and still managedthrough.
