I remember seeing a video where someone hacked their attack stat down into the negatives. The attack displayed a miss, even when you hit the attack at the right time. Looks like missing the input just makes an attack deal zero damage, and dealing zero damage is displayed as a miss. If someone has less than zero defense, that zero-damage hit has its damage boosted to actually hitting after all.
Mettaton the Unfathomably Attractive Rectangle, plus I guess some dude called Asriel, also have all attacks miss when you hit them, and at least Mettaton's clearly not doing anything like dodging, so, yeah, does seem consistent with how it was before.
Fun fact about having a negative Attack stat, it’s possible when the enemy’s Defense is below 0 that attempting to hit won’t deal damage but missing will. Basically, attempting to hit gives an accuracy of some positive number, but because of the negative Attack, that gets multiplied to be in the negatives, making the damage dealt become negative. Missing gives an accuracy of 0, and because 0 can’t be changed by multiplying, it will deal damage if the enemy’s Defense is below 0.
Not entirely sure if this is a fun fact, but I would also like to point out because it also has some correlation. In some old school RPG games, namely the Dragon Quest series with the most recent entry on the Switch, and I believe the RPG Maker series on Steam itself, also have some kind of "fail-safe" condition with negative values for stats and attributes. In DQ, if the player's attack stat was lower than an enemy's defense, the attack would be "blocked", and no damage would be dealt. However, if you can lower an enemy's defense below that of the player's attack, you then start doing damage and the animations play out accordingly. Same goes for RPG Maker. If the player's ATK is in the negative, or at least below a target's DEF, it will display as "MISS" but not usually as the number 0.
@@MrTailson1 That's interesting, when I played LISA, dealing no damage was displayed as a smaller, slightly greyed-out 0. I wonder if that was achieved by simply replacing the "MISS" graphic with 0, but I'd have to replay. I swear it's possible to miss in LISA...

I love your content, I think the TTS brings it charm and makes it even more interesting to watch! even if you do a voice reveal one day, I wish you still would use TTS in your videos!
Hi, I'm here to explain. In deltarune, if a party member attacks they deal damage equal to: ((At x Accuracy) ÷ 20) - (3 x Enemy defense) (I can't fricking post the image link of this math formula)
Accuracy score is determined as follows: 150 for a critical hit(perfect golden) 120 if the player was 1 frame off 110 if the player was 2 frames off 100 − (frames off × 2) if the player was 3 or more frames off 0 for a Miss. Miss is still a value. ''0'' And 0 is stronger than negative numbers which causes kris and noelle to hit no matter what. I hope this helps.
That makes sense if the enemy defense is negative then you will be subtracting a negative which is the same as adding a positive, so even if the first bit is 0, the enemy defense bit makes the actual damage higher than 0.
Yeah just came to this conclusion, their defense is subtracted from your attack and 0 minus -3 is 3. Wonder what happens if the defense stat is higher than your attack. Negative damage?
It's proably that when u don't hit the attack "miss" is in reality 0, so, when the defense is negative it makes damage cuz it's still making *a* damage to the enemy. At least that is what i think Edit: HOLY CHEESE WHY U GUYS LIKING THIS SO MUCH THANKS
I think this a fun bite-sized snack kind of video. Definetly would like to see more of these. There are a lot of interesting but not particularly complex theories/observations you could talk about.
I've actually tried this! When fighting Jevil, I once tried spamming pirouette for a long time. Eventually, I found that the characters max out their damage. When missing, everyone does 90 damage. Susie's Rude Buster (With Brave Axe, Iron Shackle and spamming enter) did 282 damage. It was really fun to see how easy it was to beat him
This was a really cool exploration into the game. I'd enjoy seeing more short-form theory/game mechanics content if you find more things you want to make videos about.
I don't know what merit might come from Spamton's poison but I as well took two vials on my main save just in case. Surely they will be crucial during the Roaring.
Yeah, no, Spamton NEO just can't be killed. It has nothing to do with defense, so I think it's the same thing here. The game might just choose a random value to "deal" damage to make what's basically an interactive cutscene feel more like a "second phase".
@@proyOFC Yes, hello, I know Spamton NEO's defense is below zero, and that's why you can't miss. I was saying that the vastly lowered damage during the second phase has nothing to do with defense.

I love the idea of these smaller videos to spruce up a random day! This really sounds a lot more like a programming quirk than any thing super story relevant.
its in undertale too, its used to make sure you kill mettaton neo (hes got -4000 def) and probably used for betrayal kills as well. definitely not a programming quirk and probably will be used in deltarune but not in the ways described in the video
1:21 "Well their goes MY weekend plans" a laugh track then proceeds to play at deafening volumes, bursting the eardrums of the cast, the studio & the audience themselves, some start screaming , others are absorbed into the cacophony of laughter -the April second eternal laughter incident
Short-form like this is great! I love your longer lore analysis videos and they're the main reason I'm interested in your channel, but these off-the-deep-end dives into random trivia stuff are super entertaining too.
I think the fact that is how the attack meter works is interesting from a coding stand point, and the TTS makes your channel be more recognizable, because from what I seen you are one of the few TTS theory channels, and most of the non-TTS theory channels have very similar voices and ways of talking (to my perspective at least), so the TTS is very unique and recognizable for that simple reason.
I look forward to every time you post. Your videos make my day and I wish your videos were 3 hours and never ended so I could watch all of them forever. Also, I think the TTS is really unique and interesting and is one of the reasons I like your channel slightly more! I think it wouldn't change too much if you did ever reveal your voice.
Thanks, comments like this make my day. :D My voice might not alter the finished videos by much but it would certainly alter the comments I get and the production time. I've calculated this to be the lesser of the evils.

oooh I love these videos! finding small gimmicks like this could lead to an overall larger theory, who knows plus it fills that hole of silence in waiting for chapter 3, so i'm all for this looking forward to more mousetraps!
i highly doubt its as deep as you think it is. minus defense has already been used in undertale to make sure mettaton neo dies in a single hit (mett neo has -4000 def)
I'd love to see these become a series! I get caught up in the same little rabbitholes sometimes lol so seeing the ones that other people go through is just as exciting.
No no no I'd be DELIGHTED if you make the mouse hole series!! 🙏 You'd be doing god's work at analyzing the game not only from the surface, but from the insides too. As a fellow hole diver, I also get excited over testing tiny minor things like that lmao. Alas, my life's a mess and so is my brain. I'd be glad to consume bites of knowledge from your videos.
I really enjoyed this video. It's the kind of small and obscure thing that nobody else has really covered. I'd definitely tune in for more videos like this.
You know, this actually happened for me with Susie and Ralsei during the normal Spamton NEO fight. Yeah, i found this out because I wanted to try beating Spamton NEO while only using Kris, and while i did succeed, on my first attempt, Susie and Ralsei attacked on their own when I just tried to have them miss to make it work, but they attacked anyway.
Really interesting video. I think your series concept of mouse traps is pretty cool, small little tidbits of information that the game gives us but doesn't lead to anything big(as of now). Every channel does big lore videos unless you have something interesting and unique, such as the goner code video which I loved, I think the "mouse-traps" mini-series will help you find your own niche topic to discuss. Thanks for the content!
Secretly everything I do is, to some level an experiment. There's the obvious "how does my audience respond to this" factor which I get through comments, and the technical "how does UA-cam respond to this" which... has been fascinating. My previous video (the Closet Dark World) had a ton of animation, info, and jokes lovingly weaved into it, but it did pretty badly. I suspect this is because the Title and Thumbnail aren't particularly engaging. This video is the polar opposite, light on content, heavy on building intrigue through the thumbnail/title. Immediately this became my most popular video from the algorithm's perspective. This doesn't mean I'm going to stop making info-dense deep-dives but it tells me that shorter snappier videos are more profitable and that thumbnail/title are Actually Very Important. Not that I'm purely profit-driven, I just recognize that my ability to keep making videos in the future is strongly tied to how well my channel does. (If I can't support myself through the channel then I lose time to whatever job replaces it, which means less content). So there's an incentive to find a happy-balance. Shorter videos are better for informing people as well, since it's hard to remember every piece of trivia in a 20 minute ramble session. But uh, yeah! :D My pleasure. Thanks for the uplifting comment, I never imagined how big of an impact comments like this have until I experienced it from the creator-side. It still blows my mind.
@@HalfBreadChaos Thank YOU for the unique and interesting content! I've read your About section and I love your approach to diving deeper into these games. I'll be here sticking on for the ride, wishing the best for you going forward.
Fantastic vid. Dan from Game Grumps gave some interesting insight to Susie & the chalk. He said his Dad (Avi) & friends used to steal it & eat it because it would give them a fever for a few hours so they could get out of class. I've also heard sometimes people can crave chalk if they have a potassium deficiency often from not eating good food often enough. It would also line up with Queen & the bananas you collect. Queen's No.1 concern is Noelle's happiness & she's concerned about Susie to the point where she actually brings food to school for her if you talk to her. Anyway, hopefully this helps.
Mousetraps sound like a great idea Also I just wanna say I really love your videos so far. They've made me think about theories and aspects of the game I'd never considered before ^^
I like how he writes “mass murder” and “don’t do any of these things” it makes it sound like he means “Hey, guys, you can’t do mass murder! Just make sure you don’t kill people by accident?
dude you bring up new points to a game that I thought has been picked clean for lore or plot foreshadowing (with all the info we had). but stocking up for the winter with the poison, I've never seen anyone mention thag
It’s probably not intentional but I like to think that just like missing an attack in Undertale is like sparing them, by missing an attack in the Snowgrave Route, doing damage is a form of mercy
This video was recommended to me by UA-cam, and I'm glad it was. It was super interesting to see how the defense mechanism works (honestly I thought the conclusion would be "It was a bug", so that was surprising) and like you said, how it could impact the story in the future ! (And I think there is a high chance it will, given that it's a Toby Fox game and with attention to detail, he would have patched it if it was useless) In short, this concept of video is really fun to watch (at least for me) and I hope you will make it a serie ☺️ (Edit : Also, thank you for making the subtitles available for your video !)
I've known this for quite a while, but never knew about it working on Burghley. I only saw someone do it by using pirouette on jevil to kill him easier, whiff an attack, and still hit.
If the Wierd Route ends up evolving into something like Undertale's Genocide Route, I could see this being some sort of lore mechanic where no matter what you do, you always land a killing blow on the enemy.
Smooth Brain: S. Poison is garbage because it hurts your party members, rather than heal them. Woke: S. Poison is alright because we might be able to use it on enemies in the future. Enlightened: S. Poison is good because it could be used in one of the future equipment upgrades. Galaxy Brain: S. Poison is essential because I can use it in later chapters to kill my own party members that have gone rogue due to my own actions causing their violence to occur, thus being the "good guy" all along because I only forced my closest friends to murder people in the first place to kill them myself.
i really enjoyed this video and it was pretty fun, but the longer more in depth videos about bigger topics are what i’m here for. if these take away time from making those videos, then i think you shouldn’t make these. if you are ever starved for ideas and you can’t think of any juicy topics, then these are great to push out until you can make a larger video.
Just imagine he actually does use this for a fight; everyone has had their attack drop to 0 through boss mechanic, and you need to lower their defense so much that you can break the weak mcguffin
i mean it does make sense, the equation for the damdadge is damadge-defense stat= damadge delt, so if you miss you do 0 damadge then if their defense is -1 then the it whould be 0 - -1 which whould make it 0+1=1.
The Snowgrave version of Spamton also has negative Defense, and you also can't miss an attack there.

Wow, that was in depth and really intriguing, I LOVED IT
I love your content, I think the TTS brings it charm and makes it even more interesting to watch! even if you do a voice reveal one day, I wish you still would use TTS in your videos!
oh definitely.
Tangentially related, even At Lojart made a video with TTS, and they have thousands of subs: ua-cam.com/video/aR2e3pYg19U/v-deo.html
Sciencephile The AI is an incredible science channel that only ever used TTS, so it's very possible to get popular with it.
@@Sednas mhmm!
IGoByLotsOfNames uses tts and honestly it makes their video a lot funnier so I don't mind
Hi, I'm here to explain.
In deltarune, if a party member attacks they deal damage equal to:
((At x Accuracy) ÷ 20) - (3 x Enemy defense) (I can't fricking post the image link of this math formula)
Accuracy score is determined as follows:
150 for a critical hit(perfect golden)
120 if the player was 1 frame off
110 if the player was 2 frames off
100 − (frames off × 2) if the player was 3 or more frames off
0 for a Miss.
@@TheDeadOfNight37 probably 1-5 damage or miss
Reminds me of DnD. If your "roll to hit" is a 1 or 2 and the enemy's AC is 0 or negative, you'll still hit.
tl;dr
It's proably that when u don't hit the attack "miss" is in reality 0, so, when the defense is negative it makes damage cuz it's still making *a* damage to the enemy. At least that is what i think
Edit: HOLY CHEESE WHY U GUYS LIKING THIS SO MUCH THANKS
So "miss" is equal to
0 - defense
a number less then 0
It's like in Undertale when you attack Mettaton.
yeah any damage of 0 or less dealt, is displayed as a MISS
undertale does this too
😇🧀
actual=inflicted-defense
Noelle: “He’s not THAT bad, dad.”
Also Noelle:
I think this a fun bite-sized snack kind of video. Definetly would like to see more of these. There are a lot of interesting but not particularly complex theories/observations you could talk about.
I've actually tried this! When fighting Jevil, I once tried spamming pirouette for a long time. Eventually, I found that the characters max out their damage. When missing, everyone does 90 damage. Susie's Rude Buster (With Brave Axe, Iron Shackle and spamming enter) did 282 damage. It was really fun to see how easy it was to beat him
Really? You just have to Pirouette over and over again to give them that much damage?
@@yellowpower3755 Yeah, it's insane. I recommend doing it at least once if you think you are good at the Jevil fight
Very well structured video, covered a lot of stuff without ever feeling like it's filler.
This was a really cool exploration into the game. I'd enjoy seeing more short-form theory/game mechanics content if you find more things you want to make videos about.
Huh. Wow. It's cool to see how a complete accident lead to this video. It's a pretty interesting find if you ask me.
You should make it a series, it's very interesting!
I don't know what merit might come from Spamton's poison but I as well took two vials on my main save just in case. Surely they will be crucial during the Roaring.
What is spamton NEO's defense? I've seen this happen against him too. Even after his defense is "towering"
Yeah, no, Spamton NEO just can't be killed. It has nothing to do with defense, so I think it's the same thing here. The game might just choose a random value to "deal" damage to make what's basically an interactive cutscene feel more like a "second phase".
his snowgrave version's defense is always below 0,but you can't kill him
the only way to kill him is by triggering the cutscene
@@GuanlongX read my reply
@@proyOFC Yes, hello, I know Spamton NEO's defense is below zero, and that's why you can't miss. I was saying that the vastly lowered damage during the second phase has nothing to do with defense.
@@GuanlongX ah.
Ah, I learned about the pirouette cycle from this video and used it much more recently to finally beat Jevil for the first time! Good memories :]
YES! I just love these videos!!! 💖😁
Keep up these amazing videos! I was so excited this new vid was made! I’d like to watch more of these explanation videos, whatever you want to make is fine by me!
Oh snap you peeps are so fast I haven't even pinned the FAQ yet.
(Also thank you, I'm always so nervous when a new video drops, but then the positivity makes it all worth it).
You are absolutely insane for going through the Jevil fight to test this theory! Great job!
0:50 honestly, thanks for educating me. Had no idea about this.
“Will this be important? Probably not.”
Toby, taking notes: “Yes. Probably not.”
i just wanna say, i really really like your channel
Yes, I love that idea! Making this a series would be great if you're up for it!
Maus Traps is a genius series idea. I am 100% here for it. This video was extremely interesting, too! Your detective skills are phenomenal!
Short-form like this is great! I love your longer lore analysis videos and they're the main reason I'm interested in your channel, but these off-the-deep-end dives into random trivia stuff are super entertaining too.
Can't wait to watch!! Thanks for the amazing content 🙏
My voice might not alter the finished videos by much but it would certainly alter the comments I get and the production time. I've calculated this to be the lesser of the evils.
The amount of dedication that went into this is impressive
Omfg. Another video? Dude, Ur insane, for the quality of this stuff i tought u would take double the time u did. Ur awsome AND EFFICENT. I love ur content man, It gives me lots of the Happy chemical.
oooh I love these videos! finding small gimmicks like this could lead to an overall larger theory, who knows
plus it fills that hole of silence in waiting for chapter 3, so i'm all for this
looking forward to more mousetraps!
i highly doubt its as deep as you think it is. minus defense has already been used in undertale to make sure mettaton neo dies in a single hit (mett neo has -4000 def)
I'd love to see these become a series! I get caught up in the same little rabbitholes sometimes lol so seeing the ones that other people go through is just as exciting.
FACT: when fight Susie with Lancer, purposely miss attack on Susie would still hit her with minimum damage.
"But to an internet nerd like me, the stakes have never been lower. Yet the suspense has never been higher."
I'm gonna use this.
The intro makes him awaken from his bread pile.
It makes me smile.
YES!!! this video was awesome and I love the idea! keep it up!!!
This combined with the infinite grinding exploit/glitch means you can literally not even hit Berdly and he'll fall in one hit. (somehow)
Not worrying about what the "right" thing to happen would be but exploring all that can happen. I'm excited to see how this approach will continue to manifest itself in your content.
I normally have a problem with TTS channels, but at least you use a voice that doesn’t make me want to rip out my ears, so thank you for being cool
the only tts that makes wanna rip out my ears is the mistake that is the tiktok voice
you're really finding every single small detail in this game
Mousetraps sound like a great idea
Also I just wanna say I really love your videos so far. They've made me think about theories and aspects of the game I'd never considered before ^^
I love your videos, they're very high quality and very entertaining!
I still can't believe you find so much stuff!
I like how he writes “mass murder” and “don’t do any of these things” it makes it sound like he means “Hey, guys, you can’t do mass murder! Just make sure you don’t kill people by accident?
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
dude you bring up new points to a game that I thought has been picked clean for lore or plot foreshadowing (with all the info we had). but stocking up for the winter with the poison, I've never seen anyone mention thag
thats just what he says when you try to buy something with a full inventory. its not s poison specific
I've actually lowered Jevil's defense twice without even knowing it would allow me to hit him while missing because I usually spam pirouette anyways.
bordley fight speedrun miss-only%
kris glares to reduce burghley's defence, then noelle attacks but misses. repeat until birbley is dead.
lol misspells
I clicked because I like delta rune, I stayed because your TTS screen and reasoning were awesome, thorough, and spread really great awareness.
Ty
Wooo, yeah, data collection
Imagine one of bosses being able to be defeated ONLY by that in one of last chapters.
Imagine if this is just a bug, it’s happened before, people get crazy lore ideas due to a glitch and then the devs just patch it
it was used in undertale so that mettaton (who has -4000 def) dies in one hit
Love the videos bro, they are always good fun.
Wow i really didn't know that
That's so interesting
Would lovee to see more videos like tho from you in the future
I only found your videos today but I am really enjoying your content, keep it up you’ve just earned a new subscriber 😄
Noelle didn't take to kindly to losing that spelling bee lol
i dont think i can really watch the second minute of this after those warnings
its just weird route stuff
This also happens in the snowgrave fight with spamton at the end. Kris if he misses a attack he still fights.
I actually love your use of the Text-to-Speech, since I find it weirdly charming.
Wow, maybe toby might use this if he doesn't already know about it..
(And I think there is a high chance it will, given that it's a Toby Fox game and with attention to detail, he would have patched it if it was useless)
In short, this concept of video is really fun to watch (at least for me) and I hope you will make it a serie ☺️
(Edit : Also, thank you for making the subtitles available for your video !)
its probably just going to be use to make sure you land killing blows in the future chapters' weird routes
8:15 I loved this explaination video, please make more!!! Have a [wonderfully] day !
The conclusion...
Oh no, I'm not prepared for that "winter"
I've known this for quite a while, but never knew about it working on Burghley. I only saw someone do it by using pirouette on jevil to kill him easier, whiff an attack, and still hit.
Does it matter? Might not, but this is a very cool discovery :D
All discoveries are cool for me ^^
If the Wierd Route ends up evolving into something like Undertale's Genocide Route, I could see this being some sort of lore mechanic where no matter what you do, you always land a killing blow on the enemy.
I think it's explaination in the actual story is Noelle tries to stop the weird route since defeating Berdly end the weird route.
Deltarun fans: :3333
Deltarun superficially: :-33333
Deltarun in actuality: 1:10
Cool video! Big fan of how you formated it
I like that you use TTS tbh
Yes, me too. It sounds clean and is easy to understand
I love your tts voice i think it is kind of like your personality
Noelle: _Hit or miss, I guess I never miss huh-_
Jevil was probably like: YOU'RE THE MOST BORING FIGHTER I'VE EVER SEEN, SEEN. CAN YOU DO ANYTHING?
xD
Super interesting would love to see more videos like this!
Best content ive seen in a while, keep goin!
Beardly when his defense is lower than 0: *jumps Infront of the attack that was going to miss*
"Aside from he obvious, "he will kick my butt," factor" Got me rollin' on the floor
Just imagine he actually does use this for a fight; everyone has had their attack drop to 0 through boss mechanic, and you need to lower their defense so much that you can break the weak mcguffin
I don’t mind the text-to-speech. It’s like the vessel is actually making a UA-cam channel in the void and their sharing their theories with me
Noel and kris are making there own decisions you tell them to fight they fight they WILL hit them no matter what you say
One of my favourite videos by you
i mean it does make sense, the equation for the damdadge is damadge-defense stat= damadge delt, so if you miss you do 0 damadge then if their defense is -1 then the it whould be 0 - -1 which whould make it 0+1=1.
