- When I visited Michel Jolivet, the Sarrusophone specialist and the husband of my old friend Sara Lundgren-Jolivet in Seattle this weekend, for the first time in my life, I tried Sarrusophones, and being mainly an oboist myself, this Soprano Sarrusophone was particularly intriguing.
Richard Boerlin wrote in an article "A Nearly Extinct Military Band Instrument: The Sarrusophone, Part II," Woodwind magazine, March-April 1981, pp. 16-17, that the soprano Sarrusophone in the Smithsonian's collection "has an oboe d'amore-size bocal on which was placed a cor anglais-size reed." (P. 16). Perhaps an English horn reed would then give better results on this soprano.
That and the Bb Contrabass were the only sizes of Sarrusophone I was not able to get photos of for my recent book on woodwinds.
Sounds like an oboe d'amore
I don’t know if it’s been said before, but it sounds like an oboe.
You are hearing right. It was made to replace the oboe in march band.
@@minka866 It was made to replace the saxophone as well. The sarrusophone was made to be lighter so people in marching bands could have an alternative, but both the saxophone and the oboe were already very popular, so the sarrusophone sorta faded into the background.
@@thisisachannel.9727 , I don't think so. Double reed is a quite hard to replace than a single reed. The player have to make his double reed. The single red music player just can buy made.
@@minka866 in marching band???? youve just given me an idea 😏
Actually I think it sounda more like an Oboe D'Amour than an oboe.
I have a buffet-crampon circa 1936-7 but need to have it restored to play
Wooooo, I love to own one. I'm a repair tech also, so I'm ok if I find one in parts.... How did you find yours?
@@mitchoboe_old family heirloom, recently passed down, no case. Recent research suggest it may be a Cor Anglais, it measures 24.5 inches not including the reed… a mystery still…
like,oboe d'amore mixing Soprano Saxphone
Fantastic! Keep the updates coming as you get used to it!
Shall do. I don't own it. It's Michel's. But he has another one he may be able to loan me!
Please watch my other videos as well!
Fantastic. I heard one of these just sold in France.
Could you add the link pkease
I would love to own one
You should use an oboe reed ir english horn reed
A metal oboe... basically
Yes, but the fingering is easier, and it will never crack!
Not jist basically, actually. The Sarousaphone was designed for outdoor military bands so that wooden oboes wouldn't crack outside.
It sounds like an oboe.
Sounds like a viola
@@nandocordeiro5853 no tuba
It's a brass oboe.
Sounds like a trumpet and an oboe had a baby
A lot like an oboe
Is this i C?
It's in Bb
The sound is quite nice, maybe even superior to a standard (wooden) oboe.
You are quite right. Its tone resembles to oboe d'amore. I think it will sound quite nice on J.S. Bach's cantatas!
Sounds like an oboe.
Sounds like a viola
@@nandocordeiro5853 don’t diss it 😂
