Vince Gill finished writing this song after the death of his oldest brother in 1993, he started writing it after the untimely death of Keith Whitley and he says it’s a tribute to both.
As a former On-Air-Personality of 10 years in country music, I can say with absolute confidence that you are correct. Most people don't realize the true reason Vince wrote this song. It took him a while to write it and it wasn't until the death of his brother that he finished the song and added one additional verse to tie his brothers death into it to make a tribute to both.
Reminds me of my sweet daddy, I lost him in Oct 1998..I know the angels had open arms when he entered Heaven!! He's still with me after all of these years!! I'll be with him one day, hopefully a long time away, but I'm ready whenever my name is called!!🙌🏻🥰

My brother was killed by a drunk driver in 2003. This was played at his service. I already knew and loved the song and it's meaning to Vince before my brothers death, and now I have an eternal bond with it's meaning and emotion too.

I have lost so many people in my life, and also have struggled with a lifetime of mental illness, yet I still try to give thanks to GOD for all that he has given us. I never heard this song until Jan 12 2002 when we laid my wonderful dad to rest. He was only 58. He passed in his sleep from heart failure ... With a secret smile on his face. Like he had discovered something we had yet to see. My brother in law and friend.... Singer/musicians at Dollywood back then sang this at my dads service. My dad was a true mountain man in the Smoky Mountains of TN. This song was like it had been written just for him. It never fails to touch my soul. I am a mountain girl still living here. Someday I will reach that mountain with my dad. Blessings to you young man.
