That beautiful harmony is very typical of country songs primarily because the vast majority of country singers got their start in church singing gospel music and people who sing in church or who sing gospel music were taught to harmonize at a very young age. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs, who are singing with Vince, also got their start singing gospel music and I believe that is largely responsible for their amazing harmony. This song was written by Vince when his brother died and is probably played at funerals more than any other song. Amazing Grace used to be the number one song that people requested be played at a funeral and Go Rest High was number two but I think that order may be reversed now and Go Rest High may be number one. My husband died 10 years ago and this is one of the songs I had played at his funeral. Very beautiful song by three singers who have beautiful voices. If you want to hear another Vince Gill song with beautiful harmony (again by Patty Loveless) listen to "When I Call Your Name"
I get a huge lump in my throat every time I hear this song. One THE most beautiful hymns ever written. Vince Gill is an amazing talent. That voice is sent directly from Heaven.
@@kimberlygrimm7007 Agreed. My favorite is with Patty and Ricky. Nothing against Allison's version. I get the same urge to shed a tear when Allison is singing 'Whiskey Lullaby' with Brad Paisley, that I get when hearing Patty singing this song with Vince and Ricky.

When I Call Your Name is another great song by Gill. Go Rest High On That Mountain comforted me when I lost my dear son a few years ago. I'm sure it's comforted many.
If you think this is emotional, you should watch the video of Vince and Patty Loveless performing it at George Jones memorial service. Vince struggles mightily to get through the song.
This song is the real deal. Real country harmonies. And Vince Gill not only can sing, he's an amazing guitar player as well. He can also play mandolin, fiddle and a little bit of banjo too. He has an impressive collection of guitars. Lost some a few years ago when there was a flood that damaged the building they were stored in. The man can sing AND play. You also should check out When I Call Your Name and I Still Believe in You. Probably his best songs.

The first lyrics were four Keith Whitley actually, that is where the "no stranger to the rain" lyric came from. He finished the song 3-4 years later after his brother died. Its actually for both of those people
@@jefftappan381 No, it was in tribute to his real brother who , if I'm not mistaken, committed suicide. He wrote it and sang it at his funeral, I believe. I could be wrong about having sang it at his brother's funeral but the song was definitely made because of his brother.
The song was indeed originally started after Keith Whitley passed away (1989), Vince shelved it unfinished. When his older brother Bob passed away from a heart attack in 1993, he began to finish it and finally released the track in 1995. It won two Grammy Awards in 1996, one being for "Best County Song."
Vince Gill wrote this for his brother who had died. I lost my twin brother to kidney disease on Sept 1st 2018., they played this song at his funeral. I watched this song for the first time just the other day. Vince Gil write this song for and about the death of his brother. High on that mountain... He's taking about heaven. This song stirs emotion in me. The mother of my oldest two children passed away almost two years ago. Although we divorced 26 years ago she stayed a very dear friend. I didn't make it to her funeral but I got to see her a few months before she passed. In a few days I will visit my #2 son. I haven't seen him since before his mom passed. He and his wife have a new baby now and they named her after his mother. Living so far away, I haven't had to deal with her passing but here in a few days I'll be have to have with it. Glad you liked it! It’s sad, but great! Remember to check his other songs, “I still believe in you”, “Whenever you come around”, “Trying to get over you”, “Never knew lonely” just to name some more. As others suggested, Keith Whitely is another you’ll want to listen too. He was phenomenal but passed away much too soon. Make note of Colin Raye as well. I’ve always thought he was in the upper echelon as far as vocals go.
I played this song at my grandfathers funeral this past January and everyone and a smile of joy knowing where he is going but at the same time crying for a great loss. Vince did this song for his brother that passed away which the lyrics describes... go rest o that mountain because the work has been done for his time here and now to go enjoy eternal life with the good Lord above. It is a beautiful song and thanks for reviewing it. Cheers
Keith Whitley was so darn talented. He left us all too early. He would have been hall of fame had he lived longer, I am confident of that. He would grab your heart and squeeze it with a soulful song.
Older country music was ALWAYS the best. This new stuff they play on the radio now, it is good, but has no soul or feeling put into it. I have 80's and 90's country playlists saved on IheartRadio app.
Country music speaks to the heart and soul. It ranges from the happiest moments (forever and ever amen) to the lowest (I have friends in low places) and everything in between. Most of the older songs in the genre (can't stand new country) have an element of heart in them that pop music just lacks.
Vince Grill.... 👍😂👍 But, I love watching people's reactions to this song... First time I heard it was at my Uncle's Funeral. My Gran sang it, and had eveyone in tears... And, she was a damn good singer... 👍😂👍
Keith Whitley is a great singer and is who Vince wrote this song for when he passed away then his brother also passed away before finishing the he song so also thought of him also when writing it.
Vince Gill started writing the song initially to honor Keith Whitley, another great country singer. Hence the line "you were no stranger to the rain," which was the title of a Keith Whitley song. However, he finished and performed the song to honor his brother after he died. Vince Gill also performed this song at George Jones' memorial service. He was in so much emotional pain that he couldn't actually sing. His female duet partner, Patty Loveless, had to take over while Vince simply played the guitar to compose himself. One of the most heartwrenching performances I have ever watched.

Vince Gill is said to be one of the best guitarists of the 21st Century. He’s said to be right up there with Eric Clapton. For me, he’s the only person who can actually make his guitar sound as if it’s weeping. It takes true talent to do this. Also should be said it takes TRUE love for music to be able to bring emotion out, as if in a painting. You should really hear the one with the electric guitar. And it’s not just this one. There are several others....
Vince isn't underrated how can you be underrated when anyone that knows anything about guitar playing knows he is one of the best. Never missed a note or beat singing or playing
As a couple have mentioned, this song was written with both Keith Whitley and Vince's brother in mind. Keith was a "generational talent" in country and the songs listed below are good ones, although my favorite is When You Say Nothing at All. Now with regard to Vince Gill, I would have to recommend One More Last Chance and What The Cowgirls Do for more uptempo songs and I Still Believe in You as another good slow song.
It's going to be played at my special needs brother's funeral. Vince Gill is married to Amy Grant. Vince so many Grammys and CMA awards that I wouldn't even try to guess the number. He primarily works at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. He and Dolly Parton did a few duets together too, I think.

Yes the mountains are very spiritual. Though Vince Gill was born and raised in Oklahoma, both Ricky Scaggs and Patti Lovelace was born and raised in the Appalachian mountain area of eastern KY. Which is easy to tell by their style of singing. Especially Patti Lovelace. She has the pure voice of those born and raised in the Appalachian mountains.
I can relate to this song, especially the first verse. I am 69 so my time on earth is getting close to the end. I saw Vince Gill live 5 days after my boyfriend was killed in a head on crash in 97 and I still can’t listen to this without getting somewhat emotional, easier after 20 years, but this song just evokes emotion.
Vince does a lot of duets with female artists because he's one of the few men who can sing higher than even many sopranos. He's got a beautiful voice. This song was written by Vince after his brother died, and he wrote it as a tribute. It makes it that much more poignant. You just got a new sub.
I wish that we would've played this at my late husbands funeral. We played some great ones, but his life on earth was troubled. I just worry about our kids everyday. And its been 17 years but we all still feel it.❤✌

@@amberkelly8055 Im sorry to hear that you are a Atheist...Hopefully someday you reconsider...I can tell you this...When I first ask Jesus into my life I didn't have any real proof of him but I felt convicted in my heart and asked for forgiveness...After that I started seeing Gods hand in my life...I litterlly changed over night...There was things about me that was not good and they melted away which is the only way I know how to explain it....I can ask for things and they just happen....Its still amazes me....As for this song and others,Vince Gill was doing what he was born to do....
@@truthspreader3109 I appreciate that and thank you for being respectful. I grew up religious, southern baptist and I don't feel it anymore. Haven't in 15 years. I don't disrespect people that do have faith in any higher power but it's not for me.
He can SING. GREAT SONG.
Had this song played at my brother's funeral. Every time I hear it I think of him
im sorry hear that hope you doing ok
Make the hair stand up on the back of your neck? LOL I know it does mine every time I hear this one. A golden voice in country music; and amazing guitarist. (Patty Loveless and RIcky Skaggs are perfect back up singers for Vince too.)
This song was played at my dad's funeral when he passed in 2017. He adored this song. Thank you for reacting to it.
I agree. I live near the Smokies. A beautiful place to rest the mind. Great type of therapy
Love your country music reactions!! Love that you love all different kinds of music, also that you choose music that makes sense, and no swear words. Thank you 🙂

Vince Gill is a great singer. Try I Still Believe In You, and When I Called Your Name.
Doesn`t get any better than this.
This is LOVE.
it also help's if you know what the song is about.. it hit's you that much more, Vince wrote this for his brother that has passed away
We lost my brother in 1998, and this was played at his funeral. Great reaction.

DeonSavage, thank you.
@@Tuesdays_Gone welcome
I saw Vince Gill live 5 days after my boyfriend was killed in a head on crash in 97 and I still can’t listen to this without getting somewhat emotional, easier after 20 years, but this song just evokes emotion.
damn sorry for your lost more video today go ahead sub to the channel
Vince Gill wrote that song when his brother died. Thank you for reviewing such a beautiful song
Vince Gill has a 4 disc collection one is Jazz, one is Blues, one is Country and one is Bluegrass....awesome collection
One is Rock not Jazz....sorry!
Vince does a lot of duets with female artists because he's one of the few men who can sing higher than even many sopranos. He's got a beautiful voice. This song was written by Vince after his brother died, and he wrote it as a tribute. It makes it that much more poignant. You just got a new sub.
heard this song million times still get goose bumps everytime... check out Trace Adkins For GREAT COuntry Music also..
This is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE HYMNS...timeless. Great reaction...y'all gained a #newsubscriber

I wish that we would've played this at my late husbands funeral. We played some great ones, but his life on earth was troubled. I just worry about our kids everyday. And its been 17 years but we all still feel it.❤✌
